Most of my day in the #SaltMine was spent at the customer site, as we went over features and problems. It's a little overwhelming. I need to do a better job of tearing off small chunks I can work on, esp. because there is so much to still learn, both about the tech stack and the actual program. I just learned we use #Bootstrap, which is a mysterious CSS toolbox for layout and design. So many toolboxes! So little time!

#ChatGPT is a great learning tool.

I needed #JavaScript paired with #Bootstrap.

ChatGPT gave me the code I needed in about 3 seconds. No, it wasn't perfect. I had to finesse it, but it put me on the right track and I learned a bit more about JS in the process.

Installing a modern python version on a Synology safely to run a glorified cron job script is nigh impossible to do well.

No git, no GCC, no home folder, no-executables in /tmp folder... the bootstrap chain goes on and on.

I have had to do less bootstrapping installing Gentoo stage 2 than this. 😆

A new beta version of ARA Records #Ansible, 1.7.0b1, is available for testing !

It features a refresh of the built-in web interface with the upgrade
from #bootstrap 4.6.0 to 5.3.0.

It lifts the supported version of #django up to the latest LTS, 4.2, and
raises the minimum version of #python to >=3.8 as a result.

There's also bug fixes and new features!

There's still a few changes to land before reaching a RC release.

- Native Dark
- No JS dependency on the client side

Cool stuff I didn't know about #Bootstrap: in recent versions they implemented something that works well with prefers-color-scheme, so you can easily toggle dark mode with data-bs-theme="dark" for example.

Additionally they now have bg-*-subtle variants for background colors and text-*-emphasis for text colors, which gives a lot of flexibility when combined with different opacity values.

"Navbar tools" in #quarto are super handy to display social media icons!

One minor drawback of moving to this solution: it relies on #Bootstrap icons, so there isn't one for #ORCID yet, whereas there was one when I used Font Awesome. #FeatureRequest time?

getting around a lot of the chicken+egg probs with #drupal 8 to 9 upgrades, though the destination server still needs to be upgraded from #php 7 to 8, and #bootstrap versions are either non d9.5 compatible or non php7.4.? compatible so it's like the chicken is a dodo 🦤 and the egg is a russian doll 🪆

That doesn't mean there hasn't been things going on behind the scenes !

The next release will warrant a version increment to 1.7.

It will bump major versions for #Django (server/API) and #Bootstrap including a UI refresh.

As a result of moving to Django 4.2, the #python requirement will go from 3.6 to 3.8.

The most tiresome thing in #webdev is picking the techstack. So many choices to make: plain #javascipt or a more restricive language like #typescript , which ofc is often depending on the overall frontend framework to use: #svelte , #react , #preact , #solidjs ?

Or do one completly deviate from the classical way and use rather a techstack via #wasm , such as #rust with #dioxus ?

So many questions to answer and that still is only the js side of things, you then have to think about your css framework (if you want to use something like #tailwindcss ), your font choices, and ofc if and what styling library you actually use ontop of our frontend framework; e.g. #bootstrap , #blueprintjs , #tabler.io and so on.... which also often depends on your framework of choice!

coworker helping me with something had the brilliant idea that it would be good if there was a #Drupal esque development mode where it shows you (with comments in the generated HTML) where each CSS rule is coming from in the theme.

So I'm getting the weirdest error when I embed a #YouTube video in a #bootstrap modal on #Chrome (not Safari). Did YouTube change something or perhaps chrome? I know the postMessage function is a part of #iframes as I just recently learned how to use that. The error immediately stops when you open the modal and when you close the modal the error doesn't show up either.

What is your opinion on creating web interfaces for pet projects? I mean situation where you are making some #petproject with an API of some kind and then you want to add some browser interface to it.
Modern #javascript frameworks and their "build systems" are really complicated despite all of them being marketed as easy to use. Using things like #bootstrap and #htmx is better than go full vanilla #HTML+#CSS+#JS but I'd like to know about some other options if there any

I want to share an update of my web app project. I was working on it the last few days and chose to use only #Bootstrap, #htmx and server-side rendering with a #Golang backend.

The goal is to replicate (or replace) an existing app that is built with a heavy and very limited proprietary RAD tool.

It feels a little old school (say hello to FORM :-D), but it is SO GOOD. With htmx and traditional server-side rendering I can build anything, debug anything and it just works. I now have around 6k lines of HTML and Go code, did not write a single line of JavaScript and use no JSON. Also, I don't have to build a JSON API on the backend for every piece of data I need. SQL is my "REST API" now.

Feels very productive. I think I found joy in web development again. :')

An #HTMX #dotnet user was having difficulty with #bootstrap modals. I implemented a small sample showing how to render modals server-side and show them to your users.

This is powerful as you can avoid building modals client side, and modals have much more flexibility with Razor.

i assume it's a certain type of developer who chooses to use #bootstrap ... those that are perhaps more of a technical bent, and take an off-the-shelf framework instead of doing their own styles and widgets. and these developers may not be the hottest when it then comes to #accessibility #a11y either. correlation rather than causation, in short

while not perfect, we do try to make #bootstrap reasonably accessible (it's a journey, not a destination, of course...but i think the biggest blunders of the past have been ironed out). what I suspect is happening is either these sites are using an old version of BS, and/or they're just building inaccessible stuff on top of it #a11y #accessibility

I spent more than a few hours surveying lightweight modern #CSS libraries.

When you ignore #TailwindCSS, #Bootstrap, and maybe a few clones of Tailwind, there are few that are actively maintained. (And some still mention IE compat as a feature).

I thought there’d be many options.

I’m trying Pico CSS for now just as a starter to get something on the screen.

I could go bespoke with vanilla CSS, but I’d rather not right now.

@aurooba I gave up bootstrap after the first project I used it in that was years ago.

I try to stick to solutions that use actual css.

With react.js I used styledComponents for quite some time,but that has performance implications & is tied to a framework.

i have started looking at #tailwindCSS & it looks promising, however there is a learning curve.

It is however not like bootstrap, it is more like a utility in between something like bootstrap & pure css.
