Case Study:
Brisbane Metro

Setting new standards for accessibility and comfort

Designed in Switzerland and tested in Brisbane, HESS’ lighTram® 25 is Australia’s first bi-articulated, high-capacity electric vehicle. HESS is delivering 60 vehicles for Brisbane City Council’s turn-up-and-go Brisbane Metro project – a new era of connected travel.

Delivering inclusive public transport

Through a unique co-design process with the accessibility sector, led by Brisbane City Council in partnership with HESS, the metro vehicle design has evolved. This process involved creating both a virtual 3D model and life size mock-up of the first compartment, enabling people with accessibility requirements to provide feedback that structurally changed the vehicle design. After incorporating feedback, the pilot metro was designed and arrived in April 2022 for testing across greater Brisbane...

#brisbane summer has arrived. 30°C at 50% humidity in my office. Aircon is on.

I took a thermal photo of my window and ceiling. Looks like most of the heat is coming through the ceiling. I've got some foam insulations panels downstairs, I'll chuck them between the roof and ceiling and see if that helps.

A thermal photo of the window in my office. The blinds upon which the sun is shining are glowing yellow in comparison to the cooler blue window frame and wall. Some of the ceiling is visible in the frame, glowing a dull purple.

Finding Inner Strength, Wisdom and Compassion

The Buddhist teachings show us how to find a deep sense of fulfilment that doesn’t depend on outer circumstances and is naturally ours. Through reflection and meditation, all our experiences – happy or sad, good or bad – become a source of personal growth and spiritual awakening: they have the potential to open our eyes and our heart, and make us grow wiser and more compassionate.

#BrisbaneFestival #Theatre #HideTheDog #Māori #Noongar

Starts tonight.

“A world premiere showing at QPAC’s Cremorne theatre from Thursday September 21 to Thursday September 23, Hide the Dog highlights the power of First Nations’ culture, following a journey of two besties Niarra and Te Umuroa, who while out playing in the bush, just another day in paradise, glimpse what can only be the world’s last Tasmanian Tiger. Dodging hunters, Niarra and Te Umuroa set sail for Aotearoa to hide their new friend. But hunters aren’t the only ones on this Tiger’s tail. They’ll have to outwit Māori gods and palawa spirits to save their furry friend.

“This Performing Lines production is directed by Isaac Drandic (Noongar) on a rich sound design by Maaka McGregor and stunning costumes by Sabio Evans. Co-written by Tasmanian playwright Nathan Maynard (pakana) and Aotearoa writer Jamie McCaskill (Māori), Hide the Dog is a truly trans-Tasman creation boasting a heart-warming tale, and is a celebration of true friendship that intrepid explorers of all ages will delight in. If you’re looking for a family-friendly outing – it’s right here! Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the QPAC website.

Oz police see ‘Hindu hand’ in temple graffiti, advise closure

Australia’s Queensland state police have released documents of its investigation into the defacement of a Brisbane temple’s outer wall, which suggest that they are ready to close this matter after getting no more leads from the complainants and there seems a “Hindu hand” in the anti-Modi graffiti that was done on the night of March 3 but blamed on pro-Khalistan elements.

I'm not generally one for nostalgic old hits type live #music shows, but the #NickMason Saucerful of Secrets gig in #Brisbane tonight was a blast. Highlights were Nile Song (rock!), Vegetable Man (any Syd is a win for me), Candy & a Current Bun (including some of the original Let's Roll Another One lyrics), a corker Echoes & a stonker rendition of Saucerful of Secrets. Top it off, my 5 & 2 year old boys didn't destroy their grandma's house during the babysit. Win! #PinkFloyd

Toowong is ten minutes away by car, but 40 minutes away by public #transport , because there's no way of getting there other than going into central #brisbane and back out again. (Actually, you can go up to Milton and catch a bus that runs every hour but no). Public transport is great here as long as you only want to go into Brisbane. Anything else is almost impossible. (I'd make the 375 go to Toowong personally)

Does anyone have any tips for a classic hits radio station that isn't 4BH? I'm a little tired of the right wing leaning news reports (I think channel 9 does the news coverage?)

We have the radio on for Lucy and it's just nice to have something familiar to sing along to. But at the same time 4BH needs to update their song list because the programming is a bit samey.

(We play over Google home so digital is ok too!)

Big gamble for #Brisbane-based 4BC #radio - no more Ray Hadley. And, Ray doesn't even get to say goodbye.

Ray is #1 in his slot, so I wonder how much of this is a vanity "live and local" play - it clearly isn't driven by audience figures, unless, of course, Ray's demographics are out of kilter of the station's.

The para that hit me hardest:
"Call it 'Australia syndrome', the relationship that non-Indigenous people have with the land. The culture shock of being on Aboriginal land, the clash of fantasy and reality. Where are we?"

Made me think of the time an Aussie writer I love used the "north wind" as a synonym for cold. Made me think of the men in Santa suits melting in the summer heat. Where are we?

On my way through Kumbartcho Sanctuary yesterday I caught sight of a Noisy Pitta just off the track, industriously rummaging away in the leaf litter. Super exciting, I’ve never seen one before!
