Consider Impressionism a French affair? ‘There's a strong contingent of Impressionists in the UK, too, who have long been overlooked.’ And the artistic bridge between the two nations traveled both directions. https://www.christies.com/features/guide-to-british-impressionism-8632-1.aspx?sc_lang=en&cid=EM_EMLcontent04144C56Section_A_Story_6_1&COSID=41687561&cid=DM494270&bid=358860125#fid-8632

A nice afternoon in London - based on photos from my visit there which feels like a couple of years ago not over a decade. Where does the time go?

Digital art painting of a crowd of people crossing the Millennium Footbridge over the Thames in London. Above the heads of the people on the bridge you can see the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.

This week I've been mainly reading, No. 58:

Jenny Uglow's Sybil & Cyril: Cutting Through Time (2021) is an interesting joint bio of two early C20th artists who helped revolutionise the place of #linocuts (& other printing methods). But its also the story of a partnership & its gender dynamics set within a wider account of the #artworld of between-the-wars modern #BritishArt (& has some great work illustrated). More readable than many bio-based #arthistory monographs!

A wistful sigh! I will always look back on this trip happily. This is #Culloden Moor - site of the final battle of the Jacobite uprising in 1746. I had the good fortune to be there on a beautiful day despite it being winter.

Digital landscape photograph of Culloden Moor in the Scottish Highlands - site of the last battle of the Jacobite Uprising in 1746. It was winter when I was there but an exceptionally pretty day. The skies are blue with thick white clouds and the foreground is golden grasses.

Still one of my favorite subjects... I may need a 12 step... ❤️

Your shares whether by boosting or dropping a note to a friend are always deeply appreciate. Literally how I pay the bills each month. ⭐

Digital art painting that shows the top portion of a red Telephone box and a sky filled with colorful fireworks overhead.

Hope those of you who like #London may enough this scene I did about a year ago. It combines one of my favorite cities and rainy night art which I love doing. And it works for #ValentinesDay as well. LOL

As always your shares boosts or any other support is appreciated. ❤️ #SupportSmall

In the distance you can see across the River Thames to the clock tower known colloquially as Big Ben but is truly named for the late Queen Elizabeth II. Rain is falling and there are reflections in the river walk pavement.

2/3🧵: After #covid19, #climatebreakdown and #costofliving crisis, it would make sense, none of the lightheartedness of the 90s. If the #NewContemporaries are in any way representative of the mood of the Youth, I pray they create great opportunities to build their own joy and meaning.

📽: #art #britishart from #NC22London is at #southlondongallery until 12 March.

1/3🧵: I hadn’t been to a #NewContemporaries exhibition in decades, such a shame! This yearly exhibition features a selection of the best #arts graduates. While there were some stated themes, I couldn’t help but notice an undercurrent of dislocation, loss, nostalgia for a world that is disappearing. Still the proverbial commentary on the futility of a mercantile society was represented but it was remarkably more heartfelt, lived in. #Contemporaryart #BritishArt

I could have posted so many additional photos, but really enjoyed our wonderfully weird day out exploring The Horror Show! A Twisted Tale of Modern Britain at Somerset House.

#art #SaturdayMood #Weird #TheHorrorShow

A painting by Noel Fielding. A slightly disturbing white character, with scribbles and splatter in multiple colours over the white paint. In red lettering above the creature says "Post Viral Fatigue."
A sculpture which is made to look like a fabric ghost, surrounded by trinkets and oddities hanging off the blue and pink wiring. In the background there's a door surrounded by red paint that says "Enter."
Work of art made out of yarn, fabric and other multimedia. Face of a woman with head wraps and multi-coloured strands of yarn dangling down the wall to the floor. Next to her is a golden baby, wrapped in fabric and held by a golden hand on top of a red cushion.
Enormous, white and blue-marbled wall sized multi-media sculpture. A giant blue eye and red slit center the piece, with additional red lined cut outs and 2 additional eyeballs adorn each side.

I can't believe it's been more than a decade since I was in #London - where does the time go? Still a personal favorite not just because I love the old #RouteMaster #buses but because after this bus passed I hopped on the next on what was then the heritage route.

Often, when I hear people quote or paraphrase Thoreau's aphorism about people 'living lives of quiet desperation', the art of #WalterSickert immediately comes to mind;

here are two (well known) examples offering two different sorts of desperation (one the Ennui of loveless marriage), the other, one of the reasons Patricia Cornwall has spent so long trying to show Sickrt was either the Ripper himself or an accomplice...
#arthistory #britishart

In an Edwardian sitting room, a man (husband) sits at the occasional table smoking while the woman (wife) stares at a picture on the wall standing & facing away from the male...
A man sits on the edge of a bed wringing his hands, while a naked woman lies on the bed behind him with her face turned away - it is unclear whether she is alive or dead, nor what the relationship might be between the two - doctor & patient; murderer & victim?

Looking at the #PallantHouseGallery's catalogue for their #JessicaDismorr exhibition three years ago, I found her later work where she drew forms from pattern cutting an interestingly figurative take on abstract forms (you all will of course be unsurprised to know I also thought 'hmmm, would make great carpets'... but then I found #Tate does T-shirts with he painting on & felt but better).
The catalogue is good at re-integrating her into the history of #BritishArt

This is several years old but features a British red phone box which has been one of my favorite subjects going back to basically the beginning. This is shown adjacent to the clock tower known colloquially as "Big Ben" although the tower is actually named for the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Digital Art painting that shows a Classic British Red Phone Box next to "Big Ben" on an abstract cloud-blue sky background.

As I wandered through Richard Cork's biography of the painter David Bomberg (1987), I came across Bathing Scene (1912/13) which is an interesting hall-way house between figurative and #abstractart; you can also see the influence of #cubism & more locally the vorticists in this small painting (currently in the store rather than hung at #Tate Britain?).

However, perhaps showing how shallow i can be, all I could think of was what a wonderful carpet it would make

#arthistory #britishart

A scene of a public bathhouse in which the figures are both squared off and aligned across an implied grid, in a range of colour block to give on first impression an almost abstract effect

Hope you might enjoy this London scene I did last year. I love doing rainy night scenes and London remains one of my favorite cities to visit despite not having been in a decade. So this is definitely special to me.
