If we want two cats, we often adopt two littermates at a young age. This can be a fine strategy, since we have the advantage of them being used to each other from the beginning.
However, without some attention to kitten personality clues and Cat Type indicators, it can backfire. Since a litter of kittens can have different fathers, the littermates can grow up to be very different personalities.
