There's no discussion about whether same-sex unions are OK or worry over whether he'll catch any flak. @perlman Many a Westerner #Buddhist monk irreparably alienated their family & friends through too much "zeal of the convert".

In a monastery, the senior monastic alone gets to let their (tongue-in-cheek here) "inner advice monster" (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl0rmx7aa0w) teach as much as they see fit. This is bog-standard "tight culture", doing it's thing; **it's not specific to #Buddhism**. It's folly - a very easy mistake to make - when the more junior monastics believe that this role extends to them.

I just realized my first “introduction” to #Buddhist thought came about in the 1970s when I watched Bruce Lee in ENTER THE DRAGON (1973). I probably saw it in the late 70s on television.

Shinran is safe! The outdoor statue of Shinran survived the wildfire at Lahaina Hongwanji Mission. Also, at Lahaina Jodo Mission, the main image of Amida Buddha was removed and escaped with the minister and his family as they evacuated! And since the bottom of the Jodo Mission pagoda wasn't completely destroyed, it is possible that the urns with members' ancestors' ashes survived.

Amazing update: the nokotsudo (columbarium) at Laihaina Hongwanji Mission survived the wildfire! The losses are still devastating and irreplaceable, but there’s joy in the survival of the community’s ancestral ashes. These are a crucial link of ongoing memory, care, and love for so many. Update: the Daibutsu statue at Jodo Mission survived the fire. All structures except the pagoda were burnt to the ground; the top 2 stories of the pagoda were destroyed and the bottom floor was damaged.

A terrible day. The fire killed dozens of people and destroyed Lahaina, including the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission (founded in 1902), Lahaina Jodo Mission (1912) and Lahaina Hokoji Shingon Mission (1902). The Shingon temple was the 1st outside Asia. The Jodo one had a rare 3-story pagoda and replica of the Kamakura Daibutsu. The Shin sangha has over 70 member families. I'm effectively #Buddhist, but a big fan of the historical #Jesus.

He was inviting folks to question customs and assumptions, but he largely ended up getting metaphysical-ized ("the Logos") and ethc-ized ... when, for instance, in his time and place "Good Samaritan" was a contradiction in terms — on religious, historical, and ethnic bases, his audience despised Samaritans.

Jesus was provoking folks to look at how they look at things.

Just sang my morning #Buddhist liturgy in bed after having my morning coffee. I thought, “Well, I’m already sat up, so why not?”

It felt freeing- like when people burst into song in a musical while doing everyday activity ☺️ And it was a good reminder that you don’t have to be on a #meditation cushion or be in your designated “meditation time” in order to practice! Once you know a practice well, you can do it anywhere.

@alexwild Golden Orb ants are my fave. They are here in Asia (#Malaysia). They are one of the good kinds of ants you want as neighbors - they won't invade your house, and even keep away other kinds of ants that will invade your house. They're black, with a shiny anodized golden color butt segment; has a nice sheen in the sun.
I have no good photos of them, and I can't find any on the internet either.

I don't know what the #Buddhist stance is, specifically, on #IndependenceDay, but I'm pretty sure our Teachers wouldn't be into it.

I tried searching it on line, came up with #Dhamma talks about what constitutes real #Freedom. Which is a damn good point. And was reminded that clinging, e.g., to mythic images of our various national icons, is not free. Or as one meme I saw a couple of years back put it, "I'm not free but I have this cool [flag] t-shirt."

Sati-AI is a massively misguided development. It is anti-Dharma in all the ways that matter: it removes power from historic Buddhist lineages. It devalues community and communal practice. If joy comes from faith which comes from confidence, trust and direct experience, then it becomes clear that following the #Buddhist path is a never ending spiral- direct experience nourishes trust and confidence which nourishes faith which nourishes a deep, stable sense of joy- and initiating action (& thus direct experience) from a wellspring of deep joy is easy, even for #ADHD minds. But it can’t just be normal enthusiasm- this kind of joy needs to be deeply aligned with your very being.

I am thinking a lot about what it means to be #ADHD / #neurodivergent while seriously committed to the #Buddhist path of liberation (which necessarily entails working towards a high level of mental focus!) What I’ve learned so far is that I have plenty of #mindfulness and ability to focus, I just can’t reliably direct it in the way that I want, certainly not compared to the neurotypical mind. What to do?

This week I’ve been pretty focused on #Buddhist study & practice (& rearranging my bedroom, but the less said about that the better), but today I’m going to consciously relax a little more and play some Zelda! As #Santideva said in The Way of the Bodhisattva,

“But when your strength diminishes,
Put work aside to act again later.
Once it’s well done, leave it behind
Look forward to the next and later.”

Rest is also a part of practice.

Good #Buddhist practice session this morning- received my set of the new #ThichNhatHanh Plum Village Zen tradition chanting books so did some of my favourites out of that (which I learned using the *excellent* #PlumVillage app!)

Thich Nhat Hanh was a true bodhisattva, and an amazing poet even in English. I love being able to sing the Heart Sutra every morning in my own language using his lyrical translation! I can only aspire to be able to help a fraction of the people his life touched. 🙏🏾
