This week for insects:

Papilio polyxenes, black swallowtail on fennel. I accidentally dunked it with water and it didn’t seem to mind.

Neotibicen tibicen, swamp cicada on Chionanthus virginicus, fringe tree.

Pieres rapae, small white on globe amaranth.

A a swamp cicada is very well camouflaged on a trunk of a fringe tree. It is closely clinging to the bark and is facing upwards/ to the top of the pic. The camera is pointing a little to the side and from the back of the insect. The dark mottled browns of the thorax and wings match the bark. There are green veins at the base of the wings and its legs are a faint translucent green. It’s a chubby round insect. Its eyes are like bulging black ovals to the side of its head.

To the bottom of the pic is some sky and faded green leaves.

A small white butterfly is perched on a pink spiky flower. The butterfly has its proboscis out and is slurping nectar from the top of the flower. The butterfly has two black dots near the end of its wings, and around the wings is speckled grey. The butterflies legs are gray. The eyes are very large and also speckled gray, and the antennae are striped white and black with the knobby ends black.

The pink flower is darker pink at its base and lighter almost white towards the top. Its prickly appearance is from the hundreds of pointy petals facing upwards into a ball. The individual petals are a darker pink around the edges and lighter in the center.

In the background is a blue planter with green leaves to the left, faded pink also to the left and yellow flowers and brown to the right.

There's very little long-term monitoring of invertebrates in #NZ. At this week's Canterbury branch meeting of the #NZEntomologicalSociety, I emphasised how easy it can be for some species.

As an example, I note all #butterflies whenever I hang out or bring in our laundry. I've now got 12-years of data. They show a decline in common&glade coppers and cabbage whites, while NZ blues have increased, and admirals and monarchs have stayed stable.

I came upon this vibrant, fuchsia colored Egyptian Star cluster being visited by a Red Admiral butterfly while visiting Longwood Gardens last summer. With it's distinctive pattern of reddish-orange stripes, white spots and brownish-black wings, the Red Admiral makes a bold statement while feasting on the cluster of star-shaped flowers. The lush green leaves serve as a nice foil to the riot of colors.

A Lorquin’s Admiral really showed up for picture day. He posed for a good 45 seconds.

We’re into the downhill stretch on September, and the Acmon Blues are still grooving on the Dove Weed and late summer grasses. I think the season was good to begin with, and got extended because of significant summer rain. I could have hung out and got better shots but I still needed to get a walk in. #butterflies

The Common Palmfly. A drab brown butterfly with a mottled pattern of lighter grey on its wings. A small white dot is on the middle of the edge of its hindwings. The edges of the wings are scalloped.

The Tawny Palmfly. A drab brown butterfly with a mottled pattern of lighter grey on its wings. A series of small white dots with a black border line the edge of its hindwings. The edges of the wings are more sharply scalloped compared to the Common Palmfly.

The Skipper pix turned out pretty good anyway FWIW. #butterflies They got their little straws out.

A preciously ornated round cheese box with hand-made perlage and braid in orange and green colour shades. Inside is a green-grey moth, Jordanita subsolana. The wings on one side are hidden under a hand-made gossamer of raw silk, my symbol for vanishing. Once native to Alsace, they are now considered to have disappeared.
A tiny precious element in the same green as the moth is a piece of plastic waste that melted into grey concrete. Glass beads are fixed into a golden crochet "flower".

A butterfly caught raiding the cat food dish. Was it after cat food or condensation? It has a beautiful subtle color and texture.

A butterfly, in shades of cream and brown, stands in a stainless steel bowl. The bowl is littered with brown crumbs. Streetartwall. In the courtyard of a public hospital was sprayed / painted 37 meters high mural with beautiful butterflies. There are 6 large and 4 small butterflies in a very narrow courtyard framed by about 6 floors of hospital hallways. The background is colorful squares in pastel colors and in the lower part a piece of blue water. On it there are two crystal colored, one glittering colorful and blue-turquoise butterfly. Small motley butterflies complete this beautiful mural. The bottom butterfly emerges from the water and flies upwards.
Info: The mural is a generous donation to the hospital by the world famous artist. The gemstones on the wings of some of the butterflies convey the message, "Every single life is precious."
