There is a 30 to 50 percent probability of moderate winter storm impacts in the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet Wednesday night and Thursday due to snow load and snow amounts up to a foot. Travel could be hazardous. If you plan to travel, consider alternate strategies. If you must travel, remember to carry tire chains, plenty of food, a good deal of water, warm clothing, and a flashlight in your vehicle.
This storm will actually come in multiple waves as a broad low pressure area develops west of CA and remains quasi-stationary for most of the week, spinning occasional spokes of precip onshore. It's a moody, wet morning at #ForkedMeadow #California in the central #SierraNevada #mountains. We're up to 0.9" of rain from this storm system so far. The current temperature and overnight low is 35f. There's a chance of some snow mixed in with rain today.

With rain in the forecast, we always feel lucky to have the opportunity to get out. Today we had amazing clouds, then full sun, and the rain is just now getting started. Here's an example of how the National Weather Service - which even as late as 2022 had tweets with no alt text at all - performatively creates alt text rather than caring about communicating equitably with screenreader users, who *also* pay taxes that fund NWS.
Look closely and see the actual text in the graphic is NOT what's in the alt text field. So not only does it not do the job of alt text, it's a hassle because it means screenreader users will hear this text TWICE. #Ableism #CAwx

Filled up the gas tank in preparation for the wind event in SoCal tonight; tomorrow I need to go make sure stuff is secured and cleared in the yard (as much as can be). #SantaAnaWinds #windy #firewx #CAwx
Meanwhile, in Socal, a stronger Santa Ana-type offshore wind event will ramp up fire risk much more than in NorCal. There hasn't been much rain in last 30-45 days down south, so vegetation is drier than ion north, and winds may be somewhat stronger as well. #CAwx #CAfire https://t.co/CIWG2iXaIX
Offshore winds and low relative humidity will increase fire risk in parts of CA this wknd. But important to keep in perspective: vegetation dryness is NOT exceptionally high this yr, so not comparable to extreme risk in recent Oct/Nov events. #CAwx #CAfire https://t.co/0HqLINpl1R
