#Ocular #transmission of #SARS2 has been a risk event that makes sense to me. The failure mode is clear:
1. #CovidIsAirborne
2. poor indoor ventilation
3. High #CO2 (thus potential high viral load)
4. high #SARSCOV2 community transmission
5. ever increasing evolution of ACE2 binding strength
6. #ACE2 exists in the eyes
7. Power law distributed viral shedders
What is the ocular transmission event probability?
We don't know. Perhaps wearing ocular precautions even as simple as glasses might help inform that assessment.
Eyeglasses and risk of #COVID19 #transmission - analysis of the #Virus Watch Community Cohort study.
> Eye glasses are associated with a protective effect against #COVID19
> Protective effect was reduced for if wearing glasses interfered with mask wearing
> There was no protective effect for those who wore contact lens

The protective effect was reduced for those who said wearing eyeglasses interfered with mask wearing and absent for contact lens wearers.

Sure, its a survey. Yes, I can think of several confounders right off the top.
Whether it is absolutely right is not the point. How I think about this from a #riskManagement perspective is what is the trend line of the evidence? What guesstimate of probability does the *body* of evidence support?
For me, the event is credible & evidence continues to mount. This supports a growing probability estimate.

"Net zero" is NOT zero.
It's easy for companies and nations to claim they are pursuing a goal of "net zero," to pat themselves on the back and act like good guys while in reality their actions and their policies simply prolong Business As Usual.
We must END our reliance on fossil fuels, not look for clever ways to extend it.

Big Oil, the U.S. government, and other petrostates like the UAE, want you to believe there is an easy solution to global warming, that capitalist technology can wave a magic wand and make all our problems go away. But it's a lie.
__________________________
In the crescendo of hype and greenwashing coming our way from COP28, we’re hearing a lot about industrial carbon capture technologies that attempt to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The world’s largest oil companies, along with host country the United Arab Emirates and even programs in the U.S. Department of Energy, are working hard to push this stuff.
Don’t be fooled. It’s mostly a distraction from what we really need to do right now: phase out fossil fuels and deploy more effective climate solutions. Counting on these technologies today is a bad idea.
First, industrial carbon capture projects are far too small to matter. Even after decades of investment, research, and development, today’s largest carbon capture projects only remove a few seconds’ worth of our yearly greenhouse gas emissions. The plan the U.S. Department of Energy is supporting will only be able to capture one million metric tons of CO2 every year, while last year the world emitted 40.5 *billion* tons.
Second, they are far too expensive, costing thousands of dollars for every ton of CO2 removed. Other climate solutions, including improving energy efficiency, deploying renewable energy sources and addressing emissions in agriculture and industrial sectors, are far more cost-effective.
Third, these industrial carbon removal techniques also consume excessive amounts of energy, which present enormous challenges to scalability. If we power carbon capture projects with CO2-spewing fossil fuels, the projects lose much of their proposed climate benefit, and powering them with renewable or nuclear energy sources would provide far less climate benefit than using that energy to directly displace fossil fuels.
More fundamentally, the biggest problem with industrial carbon capture schemes is that they are largely a ploy by Big Oil to delay action in phasing out fossil fuels.
These projects give fossil fuel companies a greenwashing boost, cloaking pollution underneath fake environmental responsibility, helping them claim that they are taking serious climate action, all the while continuing to build out additional fossil fuel infrastructure and rake in trillions in profits.
Carbon capture isn’t a serious climate solution.

🇺🇸 The United States of Increasing Carbon Emissions and Avoiding Responsibility 🇺🇸
__________________
As the world convenes in the United Arab Emirates for the next round of the endless climate slog, much attention will be paid to the pledges of individual nations to cut their emissions. This has been the basic scorecard of climate talks almost since the start. But it’s a wildly incomplete scorecard, in ways that are becoming ever clearer as we enter the endgame of the energy transition. We’ve been measuring it wrong.
That’s because a country’s *exports* of fossil fuel don’t count against its total. But it’s those exports that are driving fossil fuel expansion around the world, coming as they do from some of the most diplomatically powerful and wealthy nations on Earth.
To give the most obvious, and largest, example: the United States is, fitfully, cutting back on its carbon emissions; its envoys will be able to report, honestly, that the Inflation Reduction Act should soon actually be trimming our domestic use of oil, gas, and coal, as we subsidize heat pumps and build out EV charging networks.
But at the very same moment, U.S. production of fossil fuels is booming. That means, of course, that much of that supply is headed overseas.
And the numbers are truly staggering. If the liquefied natural gas (LNG) buildout continues as planned, for instance, by 2030 U.S. LNG exports will be responsible for more greenhouse gases than every house, car, and factory in the European Union. The emissions, under the U.N. accounting system, will show up on the scorecards of the EU and the dozens of mostly Asian nations that will buy the gas. But if you could see them in the atmosphere, they would be red, white, and blue.

_____________________________
As world leaders convene at COP28 in Dubai this week, the US is undermining efforts to set stringent standards for a new global carbon market that would allow polluters to help fund carbon-reduction efforts to compensate for their emissions.
According to an executive working group in the Council of the European Union, the US is backing a largely unregulated voluntary system of trading emission offsets, even though such voluntary schemes have been plagued by questionable climate benefits, harms to indigenous communities, and outright corruption.
Experts say the US is going this route, rather than backing a more stringent UN-regulated carbon market favored by the EU and other stakeholders, because the Biden administration is hoping private-sector climate solutions and corporate responsibility will help gloss over the fact that the country is continuing to break records for fossil fuel production, and is the biggest laggard in terms of paying its fair share of finance for the emissions it has wrought on the world.

____________________________
Electricity generation in China and India, and oil and gas production in the US, have produced the biggest increases in global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015, when the Paris climate agreement was signed, new data has shown.
Emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, have also risen, despite more than 100 countries signing up to a pledge to reduce the gas, according to data published by the Climate Trace project. Coal mines from China were responsible for a large proportion of the increase in methane emissions between 2021 and 2022.
The data shows that countries and companies are failing to report their emissions accurately, despite obligations to do so under the Paris agreement.
Emissions from aviation have bounced back strongly since the Covid lockdowns: carbon from international flights rose by 74% between 2021 and 2022, and from domestic flights by 18% over the same period. Road transport emissions also increased by 3.5% – probably a result of the rise in SUV sales.

@SheDrivesMobility magst das boosten?
🛠️ How does it work? Select your team members, and Co₂ordinate will rank the best places to meet based on flight-related GHG emissions. It's all about making smarter, greener choices!

Excerpts here from an interesting and fairly short explainer about the origins of climate change — the never-ending story of humans extracting valuable resources from the Earth and modifying their environment.

Amidst record-high temperatures, deluges, droughts, and wildfires, leaders are convening this week for another round of United Nations climate talks that seek to curb the centuries-long trend of humans spewing ever more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
For hundreds of years, people have shaped the world around them for their benefit: They drained lakes to protect infrastructure, wealth and people. They dug up billions of tons of coal, and then oil and gas, to fuel empires and economies. The allure of exploiting nature and burning fossil fuels as a path to prosperity hopped from nation to nation, each eager to secure their own energy.
People who claimed the power to control nature and the energy resources around them saw the environment as a tool to be used for progress, historians say. Over hundreds of years, that impulse has remade the planet’s climate, too — and brought its inhabitants to the brink of catastrophe.
. . .
Previous centuries created the right conditions for human-caused climate change, but the last few generations made it a reality. In 1960, humans put about 9 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air; in 2021, they produced more than four times that amount.
Energy use skyrocketed as cars, air travel, and technology became more affordable in many North American and European countries. Other nations such as China, Japan, and India were assembling their own energy regimes based on fossil fuels. And this all happened amid growing understanding and concern about heat-trapping gases.
Oil use grew in the late 19th century because it wasn’t as labor-intensive as coal, an industry whose workers now had strong unions in some Western nations, historians say.
Like coal, oil was easy to store. It is more energy-rich than coal, and it’s easier to move; as a liquid it can be shipped through pipes, as well as by trucks, tankers, and railcars, said J.R. McNeill, a historian at Georgetown University.
The rise of automobiles in the 1920s led the U.S. to build its energy system and much of its technology around internal combustion engines that still dominate cars, ships, and planes. And as Europe and Japan followed suit, it made the global investment in an oil-dominated fossil fuel regime “gigantic and harder, but not impossible, to reverse or replace,” McNeill said.
