Alt is now first Russian #operatingsystem capable of running on Loongson's processors based on #64bit LoongArch, such as #LS5000 and #LS6000 series, which some in Russia consider alternatives to #x86 CPUs. The distro is based on the unstable, experimental branch of the #Sisyphus project, a stable release is set for Q1 2024.

Out with the old, in with the... slightly less old but MUCH faster!

I've upgraded my ageing Lenovo M93p Tiny for use as a low-power Haiku/VM host/compiler box, going from an i5-4570T to an AliExpress-special Xeon E3-1275L V3.

With the hyperthreading and 8MB of L3 cache, PassMark says that this new processor is almost double the speed of the old one. But it only increases the TDP from 35W to 45W, so no need for a bigger PSU.

The "new" (second-hand) Xeon processor in its antistatic packaging, sitting on top of a Lenovo M93p Tiny.

@SirTapTap considering the amount of #scalping of @Raspberry_Pi #RaspberryPi's and the fact that the #Pi5B will lilely not be available at #MSRP until the #Pi6B or #CM5 or #Pi500 get released, I can recommend to take a look at #ThinClients, because they have regular #amd64 #CPU's, plenty of ports, are almost always #fanless and also barely sip power.

I do use some #hp #t520 as #MiniServers to do #backups and #torrent #linux distros and just be things I can offload building OS/1337 to...

@applebaumian @paul I kid you not: I have provided service to clients that used a #RadeonProSSG|s with #Radeon #ProRender on @Blender simply because they would've otherwise not being able to do projects as fast as they want to as they exceeeded the VRAM capacity of anything else and would've otherwise only have the ability to render on #CPU which is way slower...

So I have started a #project to build a home-brew #CPU from scratch using 74LS series ICs. This is the beginning of the first module. This board contains 6 8-bit registers which will result in 4 general purpose and 2 “transfer registers.” It will mate to another board that wil most likely be some sort of bus controller. I’m making this up as I go along, but it’s a project I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I expect tons of compromises and bodge wiring along the way but gotta start somewhere, and this purely for fun and learning.
