I took my kids to the library yesterday, and while they were playing, I poked around the online catalog and came across Rose Estes's Endless Quest book Circus of Fear. (#10) In the 80s, I was a huge fan and collector of CYOA books, but I never really got into the Endless Quest series despite also being a huge #DND fan. So I put it on hold so I can check it out later this week. Nostalgia commence!
Tried some somewhat overambitious stuff with perspective in this drawing, but I'm pretty happy how this turned out.

Okay, I think I have decided on my next side project. I am going to learn #Rust by making an #ActivityPub-compliant #CYOA story board. The goal is to have a federated story board in a way that each storyline is preserved even if a federated server goes down.
It's gonna be slow. I need to get my dev server online again, and I have never used the language or protocol, but I look forward to learning.
I will probably need tips on making a frontend though 😅

So much #writing for just 30 seconds of #interactiveFiction because of branching paths. It is a lot of fun though. My #python system is working seemingly perfectly. It's like a #CYOA but I keep track of certain choices and can even do dice-rolls and things to see if choices work out.
So does anyone have any #renpy #VisualNovel #games to recommend? Preferabley in later #renpy versions with the self-voicing feature enabled by default, as I'm completely #blind and using a screen reader. I'm 50 50 on visual novels right now; I adored Arcade Spirits, and loathed Doki Doki Literature Club. @SJohnRoss If you’re a babe in the woods, I’m a zygote. Way back in elementary, I couldn’t have enough of the #CYOA books. And I have several published by #TSR in the #early ‘80s still in my possession. I have a blog post that includes a picture of them. Don’t set your expectations too high - it was 10 years ago, and I haven’t been active at all since then.
Alas, I will admit to my ignorance of the Ken St. Andre work. I’m sure a quick search will enlighten me.
For #StorytimeWithSteve at work this week, giving Edward Packard's "Horror House" a scary read.
This 1993 #ChooseYourOwnAdventure appeared towards the end of the original run (book 140 of 185) - a time when the number of endings dropped considerably. There are only 8 in this book. At what point are you just writing a linear story with just a few page hops? Very glad the relaunch of the series moved away from this trend!

As you land on the ground you let out a victory meow, your enemy vanquished.

Resolved to claim what is essentially a throne for cats you make a running leap, landing on the third and highest level of your tower. The material underfoot is much softer than you were expecting. You could nap here if you wanted to. There's also the window to examine, or you could look for some way to assert your dominance.

You lift your head, leaving your paw pressed against the side of the crate. Mustering up all your annoyance you let out a long, low meow. The car hits a fairly noticeable bump as it slows, then stops. Mother picks up your crate and carries you into the house, then sets it down. Much to your joy the latch is pulled, and you have an easy exit.

As nice as the scritches are, your feline mind has other priorities. First among them is getting out of your crate. You step away from the side of the crate and roll onto your back, pawing at the girl's hand through the crate. She just leaves it there, confused by your behavior. You feel the car turn and slow. Thinking you might be able to get the little girl to open the crate you're stuck in, you let her fingers find your head. You press against the side of the crate and purr, and you do have to admit the little girl gives decent scritches. This continues on for some time, but you're no closer to getting out of your prison.

You rub up against the little girl's leg for another few moments before getting bored. Deciding to celebrate the best way you know how, you start to run around in circles. Mother and father let you for a few minutes before mother picks you up. Soon, you're out of the shop and being placed in a little pet carrier in the car.
"No lines down", you say, "must be at the plant; I'd hoped we wouldn't have to make another trip to Atlanta any time soon."
"I know", she says, "but if we lose another distribution node half the town will loose power and none of our neighbors are better off than we are. We can't afford to be distracted by blackouts with Alabama encroaching more and more on Society territory every day."
"I was being selfish; you're right of course. Oh, by the way, I met someone on the road…"

"Is everything alright, you look beat?", you say, stepping back to give her space. She looks jumpy as she steps out of hiding: "I'm alright, I've just been walking for a while. I've got travel papers to go to Atlanta." This stops you cold; there aren't any governments left near here to restrict motion, she must be a refugee from the New Confederacy around what's left of Alabama, and they don't allow travel to Atlanta, or anywhere outside their ever expanding territory.
It's a lovely day so you continue your walk. As you step off the road into the shadow of the trees a flicker of movement gives you pause. A woman you don't know hastily tries to hide. She looks travel worn, and hasn't had a good meal in days. It's unusual to find people who don't live in one of the nearby collectives this far out; the rural population is much lower than it was before the fall of the U.S. and the eventual collapse of Georgia and most of the former states.
As you walk towards town following the power line, your phone beeps. The face of Sonii appears. "I didn't think you'd be up this early," you start.
"I woke up when you rolled out of bed, but it's okay. The panel is fine?"
"Seems so, I'm checking the lines now."
"Okay, I'll check the electrical systems at the power plant. Chances are it's just a break somewhere. Meet me at the Souk when you're done."
After hanging up you reach the road; it circles the woods for several kilometers.
The panel looks old and worn. They're hard to come by, so you're glad it's fine, if a little less efficient than it once was. Then again, you still don't know what the problem is. Cursing you tap a button on your sleeve and speak: "Start a message to Sonii. 'I'm out by the panel that was having trouble, but it looks fine. We may have a more serious problem and anything beyond replacing components is beyond me; can I leave this in your hands?" You send the message, and pack up.
You pick your way through the forest. The earthy smell of mushrooms and other shade crops pervade your senses. Logs that have been seeded with (presumably) edible fungi lie composting on the forest floor. Passing out of the trees and into the early morning sunshine you walk past rows of vegetables and flowers mixed together in a locally chaotic, but globally ordered fashion. Several beds have raised solar panels above them, and it is to one of these that you walk. There is no power.

As father tries to pry the stick from your jaws, you watch him closely. Anticipating his moves you hop into the air, startling him. You land on your paws as the stick comes down in turn, and go from simply not allowing him to take the stick to jumping with it when he tries to pull it away.
Finally getting bored you let him take the stick back. He hands it back to his daughter before explaining what happened. Now knowing you're there, she reaches out a hand towards you.

You jump down from the window and run to capture the stick. You manage to trap the tip of it in your mouth. The girl looks confused and tries to shake it, but you hold on tight. The mother and father blink and stop walking. They look at you, but the little girl doesn't. It's as if the girl has no idea you're there. She tries to pull the stick towards her and down towards the ground, but you hold fast.

You stretch and slowly open your eyes, curled up against a window. You are surrounded by people. Other cats and dogs wander around freely, while some are kept in cages. Many humans interact with them, and some of them are even lucky enough to leave. You want to be one of them.
A family walks by. A mother, father, and a little girl tapping a stick along the ground as she walks. They don't even seem to notice you're there.
Would there be any interest in a choose-your-own-adventure type storyboard that works over #ActivityPub? Trying to figure out what my next few side projects should be, and I still feel the sting of my favorite #CYOA board dying several years ago

I love to read #books. My first was Book 5 of the original #CYOA entitled, “The Mystery of Chimney Rock” when I was around four (I still have the book somewhere with a missing cover). By fourteen, I enjoyed reading a non-fiction book entitled simply as “Brain”, and dreamed of becoming a neuroscientist, which sadly remained a dream.
My longest read were #PeterFHamilton's “Pandora's Star” and “Judas Unchained” (more or less 1,000 pages each). My number one favourite is #LynnKurland's “Dreams of Stardust” (I even bought every copy I saw and gave it away).
When it comes to genre, I read anything. In the classics, I love #JaneEyre by Charlotte Brontë. I also read #NeilGaiman's “American Gods”. But I do have genres I favour more than others: #ScienceFiction and #Fantasy. To be more specific, science fiction and fantasy with #TimeTravel and #ParallelWorld elements, if the author can combine it together, even better (like Lynn Kurland's novels: #scifi + fantasy + #romance and sometimes with #paranormal too).
That said, my taste in live-action shows is somewhat similar. And the more complex and/or engaging the story is, the more I love it. Some examples are:

#Games? This one is a long history. Who doesn't love games, right? To sum it up, I started with Nintendo's “Game & Watch”, then “Family Computer”. I also was able to experience playing in Atari and MSX; as well as table-top #arcade machines. My favourite games are: “Super Mario Bros.”, “#Bomberman”. As well as, “Curse of the Azure Bonds” (#ForgottenRealms) and the Krynn series (#DragonLance) by TSR, “Sim Farm”, “Sim City”, “#PrinceOfPersia”, “#ManiacMansion”, “Neverwinter Nights”, “Eye of the Beholder”, “#Ultima” series, and the Carmen Sandiego franchise, for the PC. (*cough*Digger*cough*)
In modern #gaming, I highly recommend #GuildWars2, #StarTrekOnline, #Neverwinter, and the open-source #rhythm game, #Quaver.
For extended reality, or XR, games, I play #Ingress, #PikminBloom, #Orna, and #Qonqr; sometimes #PokemonGo.
Last, but definitely not the least, I am a #Natsari as defined in Acts 24. It means that I believe in the #Torah and the #Messiah.
