I'm not sure why I didn't post them using the #cancer tag, so I'll do that now inspired by the article I posted in my last toot which I really think is great.

"A new study shows that bats evolved to avoid cancer and the data may uncover how humans can treat or prevent viruses as well as cancer.

A rapid evolution in bats, the only winged mammal, may account for their “extraordinary” ability to both host and survive infections and even to avoid cancer—and that success is in their genes.

Bats are exceptional among mammals for not only their ability to fly but also their long lives, low cancer rates, and robust immune systems.

The ability of bats to tolerate viral infections may stem from unusual features of their innate immune response—and these characteristics may have implications for human health.

For example, by better understanding the mechanisms of the bat immune system that allow bats to tolerate viral infections, researchers may be better able to prevent disease outbreaks from animals to people."

Folk are dying at record numbers, of comorbidities of severe acute covid that are also implicated as post-acute sequelae of covid infection. ↺

Of course, ongoing hospital staffing attrition also contributes to elevated death tolls. Said attrition continues. ↺

[CDC next updates Sep 27.]

#ThisIsOurPolio #LongCovidKills #LongCovid #CovidIsNotOver #hospitals #nurses #HeartDisease #Diabetes #Alzheimers #Dementia #Sepsis #Cancer #Covid19 #DeathCult #LifeExpectancy

Chart: Elevated Circulatory Causes of Death: Annualized Deviation from 2015-2019 Average
Data: Centers for Disease Control, U.S. Census Bureau. Reflects death certs that do not identify covid as underlying cause.

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Dashed lines for annual data for years 2015 (as of January 1, 2016) through 2020, with solid dots for annualized data weekly from January 2021 through late June 2023. [Six weeks of subsequent CDC data incomplete, thus omitted from this chart.] Dotted lines indicate trendlines from Jan 2020 forward, for each disease category.

Legend:

• Hypertensive disease (+31K more annualized deaths vs. 2019)
• Cerebrovascular diseases (+14K)
• Heart failure (+4K)
• Ischemic heart disease (-1K)
• Other diseases of the circulatory system (+8K)
• Projected U.S. population

Caption:

Heart failure mortality stands out as having declined during the pandemic, remaining well below historical trendline to this day.

Ischemic heart disease deaths increased during the first year, but have been more or less declining toward baseline since then. (Notably, ischemic heart disease is the only subgroup to have been on a downward trajectory pre-pandemic.)

Hypertensive, cerebrovascular, and other diseases of the circulatory system, though each seeing declining annualized mortality in recent months, each remain well above their respective historical trendlines.
Chart: Elevated Non-Circulatory Causes of Death: Annualized Dev. from 2015-2019
Avg Data: CDC, Census. Reflects death certs that do not identify covid as underlying cause.

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Dashed lines 2015–20; solid dots for annualized Jan 2021–June 2023. [Six weeks incomplete data omitted.] Dotted lines for trends from Jan 2020 forward, for each disease category. Dash-dot line for sepsis trend had concerted effort at reduction in 2019 not occurred.

Legend:

• Diabetes (+11K more annualized deaths vs. 2019)
• Alzheimers and dementia (+19K)
• Renal failure (+5K)
• Sepsis (+4K)
• Malignant neoplasms (+13K)
• Projected U.S. 65+ population

Caption:

After spiking in first year of the pandemic, annualized Alzheimer disease and dementia mortality dropped just as swiftly, thereafter remaining near or below historical trend.

Diabetes mortality has not been so quick to recover from first year spike, only beginning to decline in the second half of last year, though still well above pre-pandemic trend.

Deaths by sepsis were markedly down in 2019, following a coordinated national effort by hospitals. Despite this, sepsis mortality has been climbing at a rate well above even pre-2019’s relatively flat trendline, for over three years now.

Renal failure deaths didn’t see an appreciable climb until the latter part of 2021, peaking only months ago. Meanwhile, malignant neoplasm (cancer) deaths, slower to manifest, have been suggestively creeping above trend for well over a year.

‘Melanoma Institute Australia has been at the forefront of treatments like immunotherapy, that have drastically improved survival rates for the deadly skin cancer.

‘Rather than go down the usual treatment path for glioblastoma of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, they decided to try to treat Professor Scolyer in a similar way to their melanoma patients…

‘Professor Scolyer was given immunotherapy, designed to activate the immune system to attack the cancer.

‘They also used the specific genome of his cancer to design a vaccine to target it.

‘Early results 'nothing short of phenomenal'

‘Twelve days after he was given the immunotherapy drugs, Professor Scolyer had surgery to have the bulk of his tumour removed.

‘It was then tested, to see if the drugs had an effect…

‘They found there was a 10-fold increase in the immune cells in the tumour, that they were activated against the cancer and they were bound to the drug.

‘"Proving something that we'd already shown in melanoma, that there is no blood brain barrier [as] historically conceptualised, preventing the drugs from reaching the tumour.”

‘"We could not have hoped for better results."

‘"I can only do this because I'm a cancer researcher and clinician and so inherently understand the risks.

‘"This treatment may extend or shorten my life."

‘They are hopeful it will lead to clinical trials.’

A #Washington hospital gave my mom, a #cancer patient, #COVID. Most people in the ED were unmasked, incl healthcare /staff. We were masked. A nurse removed my mom’s mask to take an oral temp and did not replace it. I returned from talking to family to find her on a gurney in a hallway filled with unmasked people. I replaced her mask.

She was admitted and 2 days later she was COVID+ . She declined very quickly after that.

I got an email from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society titled:

"Why nutrition is KEY for blood cancer patients 🍎"

Can you please tell this to Johns Hopkins???? Pretty please? The food service there stank, very very badly. I experienced the full ineptitude of it during my chemo.

Now, don't get me wrong. Johns Hopkins saved my life. I'm not being hyperbolic with this. I was on the verge of death when my chemo started.

It remains though that their food service sucked very badly. I'm not just talking about bad hospital food. (Which actually has been solved at other hospitals. Apparently, Johns Hopkins did not get the memo.) I'm talking about stupid service. Like food not getting to your room. Or your supper arriving at the same time as your lunch. (Sometimes I had to order supper together with lunch due to me undergoing a procedure and them not being open when I'd be back.) Or the wrong food being delivered.

Please tell Johns Hopkins. 😭

Methods - 50,226 women without prior lung cancer...women reported frequency of use of wood-burning stoves &/or fireplaces

Conclusions - Higher rates of #Cancer (compared to women that didn't burn wood) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2023.108128

When l first moved to #Cumbria, #UK, village l now live in, l used to print & post the #science papers on the village notice board & try to inform local folk about the #health hazards of burning wood in their homes.

But, they defend their wood-burning doggedly

Folk are dying at record numbers, of comorbidities of severe acute covid that are also implicated as post-acute sequelae of covid infection. ↺

Of course, ongoing hospital staffing attrition also contributes to elevated death tolls. Said attrition continues. ↺

Hypertensive, cerebrovascular, and other diseases of the circulatory system, though each seeing declining annualized mortality in recent months, all remain well above historical trendline.
Chart: Elevated Non-Circulatory Causes of Death: Annualized Dev. from 2015-2019
Avg Data: CDC, Census. Reflects death certs that do not identify covid as underlying cause.

#ProstateCancer is both common and over-treated. A #cancer genomics researcher describes her father’s journey after a diagnosis.

He was diagnosed with an intermediate-risk cancer – unlike many Black men, who are diagnosed later and more likely to see the cancer progress to aggressive forms of the disease.

@STAT My grandmother had a #fentanyl patch as she died from #cancer, and it was far better than the morphine they used before. On morphine she was tired and delirious, but on fentanyl she was alert. Every time someone says they are stopping fentanyl I wonder who will be hurt as a result.
