Used the warm weather as a feature this afternoon.
I knew the C30, out in the sun, would be hot inside, and consequently, the plastic bits would be as pliable as could be expected. So, using a lot of patience, some plastic pry tools, and a YouTube video or two, I worked my way through prying off, unscrewing, and removing the various parts and panels necessary to access the CD/radio unit, which my son had damaged last Fall by jamming Yes' Fragile CD back in before the eject cycle was complete. (He bent something in there somewhere.)
Lots of bits with plastic tabs in a Volvo's center console. Anyway, I eventually got it out of the dash, inspected it, decided it was unfixable, and ordered a used replacement part. Should be here in a few days.
Meanwhile, my son gets to disassemble the old unit and understand how it worked -- and perhaps how he broke it.

I've just observed a mildly interesting/ puzzling behaviour across 3 generations now.
I first saw it in my mates, then in my stepson & his mates, and now in the young lad across the road & his mates.
Young male, new owner of a car, buys some wheel covers.
They open the packaging, take out and admire the plastic round bits. Another male finds the circular wires (which act as springs to hold the wheel covers on), shrugs, and throws them away, or into the garbage.
Discussion ensues about how to mount the wheel covers, why they don't seem very secure and whether they should be taken back to the shop.
If the driver resists going for an immediate show-off drive because of their concern about the tenuous mounting, either:
a) someone (usually a 3rd person) finally wonders about the spring wires they saw someone else looking at,
or
b) someone goes and gets zip ties.
Just wondering why a person would decide to discard something which came as part of someone else's accessories, and why they don't think it might be useful or necessary. 🤔🤦♂️

So I may do some video recording tomorrow, depending on how confident I am in being able to a job. My brother has an early 2000s #Honda CRV that needs an alternator. It looks like I'll have to remove the power steering pump and either loosen and tilt, or remove the radiator. I'll also probably have to support the engine and loosen one of the top engine mounts.
I've got all the tools, but I've never done this job on this particular vehicle, so it'll be a learning experience.

Hurt my elbow working on ze cars, been half down for a week or two. Miata is rolling for the season again though, helped a buddy out with some brakework. His brakes were making a bit of noise after, which we narrowed down to stretched lug bolts.
A torque wrench for those seasonal tire changes might be in his future! :)

I did a rough calculation recently and was surprised I'd saved ~$100,000 over the past 20 years by biking to work and having just one car in our family. That's without the benefits of faster mortgage payments.
The NZ govt's GenLess website estimates the 5-year cost of ownership of common EVs and petrol cars "at $36,772 for the EVs compared to $54,473 for the petrol cars".
So, over 20 years, biking has probably saved me closer to $150,000.🚲👍
