One of the beautiful Cedar Waxwings I saw yesterday afternoon.

About a dozen were at the water treatment plant, catching insects in mid-air and briefly landing on the metal railing.

A view from below.

These cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) were among a bunch that would perch in this oak tree every afternoon this past winter.

"A treat to find in your binocular viewfield, the Cedar Waxwing is a silky, shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, rakish black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers. In fall these birds gather by the hundreds to eat berries, filling the air with their high, thin, whistles. In summer you’re as likely to find them flitting about over rivers in pursuit of flying insects, where they show off dazzling aeronautics for a forest bird." - allaboutbirds.org

These three cedar waxwings are spots of yellow in a budding oak tree. The photograph is from below.

"The Cedar Waxwing is a medium-sized, sleek bird with a large head, short neck, and short, wide bill. Waxwings have a crest that often lies flat and droops over the back of the head. The wings are broad and pointed, like a starling’s. The tail is fairly short and square-tipped. Cedar Waxwings are pale brown on the head and chest fading to soft gray on the wings. The belly is pale yellow, and the tail is gray with a bright yellow tip. The face has a narrow black mask neatly outlined in white. The red waxy tips to the wing feathers are not always easy to see." - allaboutbirds.org

Partridge in a pear tree.

Well maybe not a partridge or a pear tree. But this could be a cedar waxwing tree. They blend pretty good, don't they?

I took this photograph almost a month ago, when these birds were still around. I haven't seen them in a while. There were a whole bunch of them that would land in the oak tree behind my wife's quilting shop every afternoon. They did that for weeks.

Why that tree? I really don't know, it overlooks our backyard, and the bird feeders, but I never saw one at the feeders. Though, I did occasionally see a couple in the oak tree that stands inside the backyard. Perhaps they felt safe being around a place where a lot of birds congregate.

Maybe it gave them a chance to take a break, because if a predator were to come around there were lots of other birds around to raise the alarm.

In this photograph, there are the many crisscrossing branches of an oak tree with thousands of new small yellowish green leaves. Light blue sky is visible looking through the tree branches. Hiding among the branches and leaves are several cedar waxwings. In this frame there are only seven, but the frame doesn't show the whole tree. The birds blend fairly well with the tree leaves.

First Cedar Waxwing ever in our backyard! They have a creepy high pitched song. #BirdsOfMastodon #CedarWaxwing

This Cedar Waxwing has a black mask that extends from its eyes to its chin, with a crest of feathers on its head. Its wings and tail are brown with yellow and white accents, and its tail has a bright yellow tip. The Cedar Waxwing's most distinctive feature is its red-tipped wings. It’s on a budding tree with a blue sky.

Believe it, I'm real.

This cedar waxwing looks like a bandit put together by Crayola.

"Building a nest takes a female Cedar Waxwing 5 to 6 days and may require more than 2,500 individual trips to the nest. They occasionally save time by taking nest materials from other birds’ nests, including nests of Eastern Kingbirds, Yellow-throated Vireos, orioles, robins, and Yellow Warblers." - allaboutbirds.org

This cedar waxwing is perched on a branch of a pin oak tree. It's leaning slightly forward and is quite colorful. It has a short black geometric beak, a flat head, and a black mask which covers a black eye that shines from within. Its peach-colored crest shoots back and hangs over the back of the head like a mop of hair. Its neck is the same peach color. It has a very yellow round breast. Its glistening pointed wings are brown starting at its shoulder but fade to black about halfway down. Midway through the middle of the black part of the wings there are three red dots on a horizontal line. Its black tail sticks straight back, the upper part of the tail near its rump looks like rubber, but that's likely because of lighting. Farther down, the tail darkens further; then suddenly there is a broad tip of bright yellow which seems to be capped by a smaller black tip. Grey feet grip the branch.

Almost

I normally save these for morning toots. But I'm kind of proud that this is almost in focus. The thing about these cedar waxwings is they move pretty fast and there's not much exposure time between point A and point B, so it's kind of lift and shoot.

Besides, this doesn't look too horrible.

Hmmm ... I'm having a bit of DeJa'Vu.

Very interesting 🧐

This cedar waxwing seems to be closely studying something on that branch.

I need to figure out a way to get closer to these birds, but they are always at the tops of very tall trees. Short of climbing the tree, I'm at a loss.

Good morning ☕☕☕

It's coffee time again my friends 🎶🎵

I use these slightly out of focus birds in flight for the first toot in the morning. Usually, it's pigeons because they are incredibly easy to catch flying. This photo though is of cedar waxwings passing over. In fact, I started to entitle this post "Not Pigeons" 😬.

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is ‘yourer’ than you.” - Dr. Seuss

There are three slightly out of focus cedar waxwings flying overhead away from the camera. One on the left and two on the right. The left one is slightly closer that the other two. The color yellow is faintly visible from their bodies and you can clearly see red at the tips of their tails. Something that I find interesting is that their tails are not fanned out like most birds in flight. I'll want to read about that, perhaps it's the shape of the wings which seem rounder and longer in proportion to their bodies.

Always high ...

Cedar waxwings are easy for me photograph because there are a lot of them in the treetops. But getting an excellent photo is a completely different story. The always perch and the very top of very tall trees and they mostly seem to hide their faces either being turned away or performing some grooming tasks with their heads buried in their feathers. This photo is okay, and I'll leave it at that.

This cedar waxwing is sitting in a tangle of branches the camera lens is looking up at the bird. The bird's beak and black mask form almost a pyramid on the front of its head. I can see its black eye shining from within the shadow of the black mask of feathers that wrap around its head. On the top of its head is a mop of yellow feathers that shoot back and look rather like a bad hair piece. Its body is a mixture of bright lemon yellow and a dirtier peachy color. Black wings hang straight down at its side. The bird's tail is obscured by a branch.

Standing watch ...

I haven't seen any cedar waxwings for a few days. But this one reminds me of a superhero up high standing watch.

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #CedarWaxwing

This is a photograph of oak tree branches. Up high in the center of the tree/photo sits a lone figure looking out to the left, as if watching. The figure is a very yellow cedar waxwing. The bird's head and beak look chiseled. It has a short black beak and a triangle of black feathers cover its eye, it's hard to tell where the beak ends, and the feathers begin. The glint of its black eye faintly shows. Its head, beak, crest form a flat forehead. The crest shoots straight back and curves down like a hammers claw. Indeed, its head is shaped like some sort of heavy digging tool. The body is yellow, and you can see a black wing folded at its side. Dark claws grip the branch below.

Awkward ...

This is not a good photograph, but I caught the cedar waxwing in a rather comical pose so here it is, it looks almost like a cartoon.

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #CedarWaxwing

In this photo, there is a yellow cedar waxwing. It is gripping a small branch with its right claw while it appears to scratch its chin with the left claw. Kind of like a dog would scratch with its hind paw. Its body is bent at the leg in a way that causes to breast to face down. The photo of the bird is without much texture, so it looks a bit cartoonish. The bird has a brownish orange crest that sweeps back from its forehead like a mob of hair. It has a short black beak that appears slightly rounded on the end. Its eyes are concealed by a black mask of feathers but there is a dash of white that is probably a reflection of light off its eye. The bird's breast is very yellow while its back appears grey - perhaps a trick of light. The tail sticks back and looks almost the shape of a duck's bill at the tail's tips are very deep yellow. The bird is framed by branches and four large yellow buds.

Bandit

This cedar waxwing is approaching a tree that part of its flock had settled in. The black coloring on its face makes it look like a bandit. I have better photos of cedar waxwings, but I like this one. It's hard to catch a bird flying.

"The cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum ) is a member of the family Bombycillidae or waxwing family of passerine birds. It is a medium-sized, mostly brown, gray, and yellow. This bird is named for its wax-like wing tips. It is a native of North and Central America, breeding in open wooded areas in southern Canada and wintering in the southern half of the United States, Central America, and the far northwest of South America. Its diet includes cedar cones, fruit, holly berries, and insects." - animalia.bio

Cedar Waxwings.

Yesterday a small flock of cedar waxwings occupied the very top of a tall tree at the edge of the forest. I took this photo from a corner inside my backyard fence.

"The name "waxwing" comes from the waxy red secretions found on the tips of the secondaries of some birds. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may help attract mates." - allaboutbirds.org

Cedar Waxwing.

I looked through the photos of the flock of birds that were in the tree behind my wife's shop yesterday. I posted a photo this morning. Cedar Waxwings are beautiful birds.

Cedar waxwings are one of my favorite backyard birds in the PNW. They come in giant flocks (along with robins, thrushes, and the odd squirrel) to eat ripe berries then vanish as quickly as they arrived. 85% of their diet is fruit!
