"Who Was Zhang Xuan? Famous Painter of China’s “Golden Age”."

Zhang Xuan was one of the most famous artists in China’s Tang dynasty. While Europe was still in its so-called “Dark Ages”, he was making detailed, naturalistic work.

#Culture #Art #ArtHistory #China #ChineseArt #TangDynasty

https://www.thecollector.com/who-was-zhang-xuan-tang-dynasty/

Detail of Emperor Xuanzong giving audience to Zhang Guo, one of the 'Eight Immortals', in a painting by Yuan Dynasty painter Ren Renfa (1254–1327). Emperor Xuanzong of Tang ( 8 September 685-3 May 762), also commonly known as Emperor Ming of Tang (Tang Minghuang), personal name Li Longji, known as Wu Longji, was the seventh emperor of the Tang dynasty in China, reigning from 712 to 756. His reign of 43 years was the longest during the Tang Dynasty. In the early half of his reign he was a diligent and astute ruler, ably assisted by capable chancellors like Yao Chong and Song Jing, and was credited with bringing Tang China to a pinnacle of culture and power. Emperor Xuanzong, however, was blamed for over-trusting Li Linfu, Yang Guozhong and An Lushan during his late reign, with Tang's golden age ending in the great Anshi Rebellion of An Lushan.

"Dish with Two Boys," unknown artist, 16th century.

Something a little different. Here's a lacquered dish from China showing two boys playing. I think they're pretending to be soldiers; one is beating a drum while the other rides a hobbyhorse, which was actually invented in China.

From the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Bamboo has been an important and meaningful subject for painting during many periods in Chinese history.
The Chinese often compare bamboo to gentleman for its unique character of being neither cringing nor arrogant. Furthermore, bamboo painting is symbolic of self-effacing, integrity and safety.

I just realised there's 20yrs between these two pieces. To the left is a poster with a panoramic view over the Forbidden City in Beijing. I bought it on site 1998. To the right is a battered silk painting a friend of my parents bought in China 1978. (Yes, I need to give the painting a better home. I framed it when I was ten, so it's not the best casing. OTH the frame probably protected it through several chaotic moves.)

#ArtistLife #ChineseArt

To the left a yellow tube with gilded dragons, gold characters, and a red seal. To the right a simple wooden frame with a plastic pane, displaying a silk painting with three boys in colourful Chinese clothes playing with paper kites. The painting has some minor brown spots and discolourations where moisture has gotten to it through the years.

Georgette Chen (张荔), born Chang Li Ying (1906–1993), Self-Portrait, oil on wood, 35 by 27 cm.; 13 3/4 by 10 1/2 in., sold through Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2015 for 2,960,000 HKD. #womanartist #womenartists #asianartist #chineseart #arthistory #womenshistorymonth

From the Sotheby’s website: “… the artist’s countenance dominates the picture plane. The hyperbolic scale of the face renders the image intriguing and intense; the experience of viewing the work mimics that of intently looking in a mirror or drawing very intimate contact with another individual. The prim Chinese collar concealing her neck and her neatly pinned, elegantly arranged hair place further focus on her memorable visage, adding to her mystique. By applying soft shadows and subtle highlights that reveal the contours of her delicate facial features, she permeates the image with an impression of reticent calmness… Chen utilizes a muted palette… her brushstrokes are vigorous, unrestricted and loosely fragmented… Bearing a reserved expression on her slightly tilted face, Chen is imbued with a sense of feminine vulnerability. Yet, her intense eyes tellingly penetrate the viewer’s consciousness… she is sensitive yet detached, sincere yet private, shy yet determined.”
