This “Winking Santa” set was manufactured by Holt-Howard, a company formed by 3 Amherst college buddies in 1949.

Co-founder A. Grant Holt was influenced by Christmas decorations in Sweden, where he did post-graduate studies.

If you grew up in the latter half of the 20th century, light-up plastic blow molds were a #Christmas tradition!

These beauties were made by Empire Plastics in the late 1960s.

Empire was founded in 1953 as a division of Carolina Enterprises in Tarboro, NC. They continued manufacturing until 2001.

It wasn’t #Christmas back in the day until Dad set up the cardboard fireplace!

This 1960s model was made by Kettering Toys and sold by Sears. The “fire glow” was created w/ a red bulb behind the cardboard.

Some even had an oscillator to create a “flicker” effect! 🔥

Last night was the first measurable snowfall here in Chicago. Looks like the faeries moved inside for a bit.

A teeny pink fairy door is visible at the foot of a huge tree truck, as seen through the glass block windows of my apartment. Snow is on the ground.

Interior red fairy door, bedecked with glass ornaments. A wrought iron lantern illuminated lantern is affixed to the upper right of the door, casting a light on the Christmas tree on the floor below it. The tree is lit, and decorated with garland made from a repurposed glass bead necklace.

Christmas tree bubble lights were patented in the 1930s, but not available until 1946, due to wartime shortages.

NOMA Electric Company was the first to market them — and made more than 25 million in the first two years!

And the NOMA brand still exists today.

Shiny Brite Co. manufactured glass #Christmas tree ornaments in the U.S. beginning in the late 1930s.

Corning adapted their lightbulb-making process to manufacture the glass balls, which were then decorated by Shiny Brite artists (initially, by hand).

Founder Max Eckardt sold the company at its peak in 1955, when production had reached 1,000 ornaments per minute!

The rotating Color Wheel was the companion to aluminum #Christmas trees in the 1950s and ‘60s.

This version was manufactured by Harmony House and sold at Sears.

“Off-tree" lighting was a must for safety reasons, due to the high conductibility of the aluminum branches.

Aluminum #Christmas trees were manufactured in the U.S. beginning in the mid-1950s.

Between 1959-69, more than one million were produced by the Aluminum Specialty Company of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Their popularity decreased after they were equated w/ commercialization in #ACharlieBrownChristmas (1965). 🎄
