Just saw my umpteenth advert for #google #Chromebook for education today. A company that kills entire product lines without any thought to their customer base. In this case, #schools. If I was an #educator, I'd be very concerned that support might not last longer than the time it takes a child to go through high school.

Ist Windows und Word, also Microsoft, ein Muss? Sonst hätte ich ein Chromebook empfohlen. Die Teile sind billig, können genau das (also auch Textverarbeitung, nur nicht unbedingt Word, wobei die auch mit Worddateien umgehen können), haben eine extrem lange Lebenszeit (10 Jahre Updates), wiegen nicht viel und brauchen kaum Strom.
Ich habe hier einen als mobilen Privatrechner. Liebe den sehr, meiner lässt sich auch zum Tablet umbauen, was total cool für die Couch ist.
Arbeiten tue ich auf einer Linuxkiste, weil ich die als Entwickler halt brauche, aber eigentlich würde ich am liebsten auf dem #Chromebook bleiben. :)
Vielleicht überlegst Du mal, ob Du unbedingt Windows brauchst und wozu eigentlich bei dem Preis. Spiele (was ja immer das Hauptargument ist) können es ja für den Preis kaum sein?
Ich hoffe, der Hinweis nervt nicht, weil Du sowieso auf Windows festgelegt bist..

Das Lenovo C340 #Chromebook hab ich vor knapp 4 Jahren gekauft. Damals mit 6 Jahren garantierten Updates. Das wurde dann schnell auf 8 Jahre erhöht.
Und nun sind es 10 Jahre. Da das das #Android Subsystem einschließt sind ChromeOS Geräte wohl die am längsten unterstützten Android Geräte überhaupt.

I may be biased as a #Chromebook user but even I have things I dislike about #ChromeOS.
1. Having to use the #Linux #container or turn on Developer Mode to sideload #Android apps. I mean come on! If you can run whatever you want in the Linux Container why can't I sideload stuff into my Android #VM‽ Even #Windows 11 let's you sideload Android apps and it's a worse implementation! I still want to try #FydeOS though since I hear it lets you sideload.
2. Deprecating the chrome.input.ime API without a proper replacement is a dick move on the part of #Google. One of my favorite #Chrome #extensions #CrosKeys is going to stop working as of ChromeOS 119. It's a powerful app that lets me insert #Unicode characters in any app, even Android and Linux. I'm going to miss that. Even if it's a security issue, you could have still provided a replacement. Android has custom keyboards so why can't ChromeOS?
3. Why are so many expected features missing from ChromeOS? Pull to refresh is no more on Chromebooks which was useful for tablet mode. The eyedropper API is missing which would be nice for graphic design. There used to be a feature where you could tear tabs out of windows and put them in other tabbed windows even if it's not from the same app. That was really cool and I miss it.
I could go on but this is already a long #rant post so yeah. I still love Chromebooks though. I hope it gets better with cool features.
I have a #Chromebook that I use to watch videos, and I recently started taking some #AWS tutorials, so I got to wondering if I could deploy my @enhance_dev site from it.
Took me about thirty minutes to install #VSCode sync my settings, clone my #GitHub repo, sign into AWS with my #yubikey, install #NVM and then deploy!
Easy peasy!! #ChromeOS is pretty slick!
So I got an invite to #Beeper yesterday. First impressions are very good! I connected 3 chat services and they all work pretty seamlessly. I haven't tried connecting to #Matrix rooms yet but that's something I might do later. I want to try other Matrix clients with Beeper too to see how that works. Installing it was pretty easy on my #Chromebook and #Android phone. I hear it works with #XMPP too so that might be worth trying. It's not perfect though as none of the chat services work with all the same features and it can lag a little bit but none of it is a deal breaker for me. It seems to be getting updates all the time though so I suspect that it will only get better. It's nice having a #chat app that breaks the walled gardens of #RCS, #iMessage, and #Facebook. I'll probably post more thoughts about it in a week or so. Overall, it's a pretty good app.

I have an old Chromebook that just lost all it's updates (Like last month, Aug 2023 was when support ended for it).
I tried to put Linux on it, but turns out it is ARM based (if I would have know that when I bought it I wouldn't have bout it).
I did get PrawnOS Arm64 to install, but WiFi doesn't work.

I hate to admit it but the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 #Chromebook detachable/tablet hybrid is hands down the best travel device I've ever owned. The built-in #debian environment gives me full access to all my development tools while traveling, it's ARM so all the Android apps I use run flawlessly, and battery life is incredible. Also, #ChromeOS has gotten surprisingly good. 😬

Hope I can find a bit of time this weekend to do a final update on my reformed #Chromebook. Everything on it now works perfectly with stock Debian, and the battery life is fantastic.
I'm not going to edit video on it (I can definitely watch some, though) but that was never the point. It runs a web browser, I can open a terminal on it, and it's hooked into my admin VPN. I can leave it at work or throw it in a bag and Sort Something Out in a pinch.
Playing solitaire with the stylus while it's folded back into tablet mode is just a bonus!
AAAA++++ would buy unwanted Chromebooks again.

I loaded Linux (GalliumOS) and Krita 4.3.0 onto an Acer C720 Chromebook and hooked up a Wacom and monitor for drawing! This thing's got a bigger screen than the iPad Pro! 😉
It's pretty barebones with 2GB RAM, but since I have to spend so much time in the kitchen, I hope this lets me grab a few spare minutes once in a while to practice drawing more (especially studies) 😀

8GB and Intel are to be able to run an VM (and easily get Software)

A dusty 8 year old #Chromebook, revived with #Debian, all I needed was the firmware-iwlwifi and firmware-intel-sound packages for it to fully work. There are still some ACPI errors in dmesg, though...

I'm working with a mentee. They are having a rough go at it and are very economically challenged. They are actively job searching.
Currently, all they have is a cell phone. I'd love to be able to get them a computer - a #Chromebook would be more than enough.
Does anyone know of a non-profit that helps get tech to socio-economically challenged folks?
I'd appreciate a boost!

Don't turn an old MacBook or PC into a Chromebook with "Chrome OS Flex." You can't install Android apps like you can on a regular Chromebook.
It might seem like a nice way to give your kids a locked-down computer to play with, but it's a waste of time.
We went from "we have a spare Mac that can run anything" to "we have a computer for the kids where they can only look at websites and Chrome extensions." 😖
ChromeVox tip: If an app has TalkBack actions, use Search + Control + A (for actions) to open a list. Unlike VoiceOver actions, you can use letter navigation to, say, move directly to the "favorite" actions in Tusky.
The trackpad on my #Samsung #Galaxy #Chromebook 1 has been jumpy since I bought it on eBay.
I'd fix it but the thing is so compact I imagine it's held together with elder magic and epoxy.
I wish every #laptop was as easy to #repair as my #Lenovo #Yoga920. I had the trackpad on that swapped in <30mins.
