The cicadas made quite a roar
As loud as a dinosaur's roar
We heard it deep down
From fiber-optic town
And their sound could be monitored evermore

New on Entomology Today: A long-standing query about periodical cicadas was recently answered: Once periodical cicadas emerge, do they actually feed on vegetation? Their analysis of gut contents found plant DNA in mature adult cicadas but none in freshly emerged adults, a strong sign that adult cicadas do feed on plants, since no plant matter in cicadas' guts carries over from their nymph stage. #entomology #insects #cicadas https://entomologytoday.org/2023/10/20/adult-periodical-cicadas-eat-plants-gut-content-analysis/

A black and green cicada on the leaf of a shrub.
Dorsal view of the cicada, held firmly between my thumb and index finger.
Ventral view of cicada. (Please ignore my ragged nails.) You can see the cicada's white underbelly with its folded-up legs, the thin stylet with which it drinks plant sap, and the old-timey-microphone-looking bump in the middle of its face. It's not dead, just pretending to be.
Head-on view of cicada. Between its dark mottled olive-green eyes is a triangle of three golden-brown ocelli, or simple eyes. It also has two whiskers pointing outwards.

Closeup image of a scissor grinder cicada (Neotibicen pruinosus according to my ID app) on a green common milkweed leaf. The body shape of the species is somewhat similar to a fly though the cicadas several orders of magnitude larger. It's large body is covered with white, dark green, brown, and black markings on the thorax and head and its abdomen is completely black. The black and white striping on the front of its head and above its beak (the area is called clypeus, I believe) has the appearance of a large grill on the front of a car or truck. Its wings are wide, transparent, and longer than its body. It has two large eyes on either side of its head along with two small antennae.

went out for a walk to enjoy the cool weather, and i was looking for cicadas. while checking trees in a cemetery i found some ants carrying what looked like sour punch candy or something, so i followed the other workers and found a very tragic sight :( circle of life i guess!

But not every cicada emerges successfully. My first find was this partially emerged cicada being rapaciously devoured by the big carpenter ants (_Camponotus_) that also live in the willows. They were carrying away great hunks of meat in their jaws. Seeing this, I was surprised that any cicadas managed to molt successfully at all!

#Cicadas #Wildlife #Nymph #WildTO #CityOfTO

This is a nymph of a dog-day/annual cicada (Hemiptera/Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadidae). The nymphs spend three to five years underground feeding on sap from roots, and when fully grown, they tunnel up to the surface to find a safe place for the adult winged insect to emerge from its nymphal 'shell.

Wow... This is my 12th summer in #Japan and for the first time, I don't hate #cicadas as much as I used to.

First, probably because of the heat, they're not as loud as before (people who live in Japan and don't think they're loud live surrounded by too much concrete). But also, turns out they're the perfect frequency to mask my
#tinnitus.

The rather unfortunately named Bladder Cicada, Cystosoma saundersii, much more beautiful than its name…
Like most of its kin, however, absolutely deafening when they party.
I found this one on the deck railing, which was lucky, since they’re extremely well camouflaged.

A bright yellow-green cicada seen in profile, at eye-level, against a dark, indistinct background.
Apart from its eye, which is a dark red-brown hemisphere, the rest of the cicada, including its legs and underside, is green with lighter yellow patterning. Its curved and tented wings, which cover almost the entire body, are subtly and intricately veined and patterned to resemble a slightly yellowed leaf, and the deception extends to the lower edge of the wing, which has a rounded, brighter yellow thickening resembling the leaf’s stem or spine.

New article by Darren Ficklin et al on "Influence of the 2021 Brood X cicada emergence on near surface hydrology in forested and urban landscapes" finds that cicada burrows only had an impact on near surface hydrologic processes at *undisturbed* sites. Turns out that day-calling #crickets (as opposed to night-calling species) tune their #chirps to avoid the same #bandwidth as other nosy #insects (like #cicadas). We know #birds do this type of thing ("#acoustic #niche partitioning"). Interesting to see it in insects.

Title: The #circadian calling activity of a lebinthine cricket with high-frequency calls is unaffected by cicada choruses in the day

Link: https://peerj.com/articles/14641/

Fig 2 from the linked paper. Text from the figure heading is as follows: "Calls, calling activity patterns and the frequency partitioning of crickets and cicadas in Singapore.
Calls and calling activity patterns of crickets and cicadas in Singapore. One hour spectrogram showing the transition from nocturnally singing crickets (band at ~6 kHz) to the “cicada ^” dawn chorus and the diurnally singing Purana sp. cicada and Lebinthus luae cricket (A). Insets (B–E) show short timescale spectrograms of the calls of the most common singing insects in the recording. The wav.file for this 1 h spectrogram is available as Data S1. Calling activity of L. luae around sunrise based on field data (green line) and data collected from isolated males in the laboratory (blue line) (F). The presence of negative values for the standardised number of echemes per hour is due to the standardisation so that the laboratory and field recordings were comparable. The polygons bordering the line represent the 95% confidence interval. Grey shade represents night-time; white shade represents daytime. A GAMM with gaussian error structure was fitted, with R2 = 0.53. Boxplots comparing the frequencies of the fourth harmonics of the cicada choruses and the dominant frequency of L. luae calls (G). Thick horizontal bar shows the median; lower and upper margin of the box indicate the inter-quartile range and whiskers refer to minimum and maximum data points."

#Audubon was a such a tool. Why did we let him just name bird species after his friends/customers?

#GideonBSmith might have been an interesting guy – he seems to be *the* person who first figured out and published predictions on #emergence of 13- and 17-year #cicadas – but there's no evidence to suggest he ever encountered the #longspur named in his honor.

Naming that bird #Smith's longspur tells us nothing about the bird. It's just senseless croneyism.
