We have a new #Nachtlichter publication, it's a project report (in German) written primarily by @nonaschulteroemer : https://doi.org/10.48440/gfz.b103-23036

Among other things, it discusses a survey of our citizen scientists, their demographics, and why they took part.

Nachtlichter-Kampagnen liefen vorwiegend in deutschen Stadten.

EARTH'S RING CURRENT JUST SPRANG A LEAK:

"During this past weekend's strong G3-class geomagnetic storm, low-latitude #auroras spread as far south as #Texas and #Arizona. Upon further review, most of those lights were not auroras at all. Everything #red in this montage is an 'SAR arc'.

"'On Nov. 5th, the ring current was pumped up by hours of strong geomagnetic storming, with energy dissipating into these SAR arcs,' says Jeff Baumgardner of Boston University's Center for Space Physics. 'It was a global event. Our cameras registered #SAR arc activity from #Italy to #NewZealand.'

"Recent research has linked SAR arcs to another phenomenon that is not an aurora: #STEVE. The #mauve ribbon in the sky was not originally thought to have anything to do with Earth's ring current. Yet in 2015, observers in New Zealand caught a bright red SAR arc transforming itself into STEVE like a caterpillar into a butterfly.

"On Nov. 5th, Mark Savage may have witnessed the same metamorphosis over Northumberland, #UK:

"Visible to the naked eye, STEVE materialized from an overhanging red arc. 'The entire process took about 10 minutes,' says Savage. This timescale roughly matches that of another SAR-to-STEVE transition observed over Canada in April 2022. Clearly, the two phenomena are linked, but researchers aren't sure how.

"'The connection is still elusive,' says Carlos Martinis, a leading researcher in the field at Boston University. 'Sometimes SAR arcs evolve into STEVE--but not always. This is a very active field of research, involving citizen scientists and researchers.'

"Did you see an SAR arc on Nov. 5th? Submit your pictures to Spaceweather.com."

(you) have big mature healthy trees ... you can analyze it, but you also can feel it, that you're in a forest that's whole, it's not trying to become something else. It's not a young forest that is on its way, it actually has all of its components to it."

@RadarScope users can submit mPING reports within that app by clicking the share button at the bottom of the screen and selecting mPING Report.

For both methods (mPING app and RadarScope) there is no login required and no personally identifiable information is sent.

A screenshot of the share function in the RadarScope app showing where to submit an mPING report. Frequently used contacts of mine are obscured for privacy reasons.

One of the simplest #CitizenScience things people can do to help meteorologists is to download the mPING app and report what they’re seeing, including precipitation, wind damage, flooding, etc.

Reporting is quick and can be done as frequently as you’d like. Many NWS offices use these reports for situational awareness and to confirm how ground conditions compare to what’s on the #weather radar.

Available for both iOS and Android by searching mPING in the relevant app store.

The front screen of the mPING app showing the user’s current location with rain selected as the parameter to report. Logos for the University of Oklahoma, NOAA, and NASA are at the bottom left.

TA: #citizenscience & PAR create ethical issues relating to power & responsibilities. They are messy and can't be tamed.

Need to beware of exploitation & acceleration coming with scaling up things in hackathons, living labs etc. Can't over-ask people to contribute data for us.

Need to be open with our problems, share our hard experiences with critical friends.

email:
Please help us test a potential new Zooniverse project: Burst Chaser

What the researchers say:

In this project, we need your help on classifying light curves of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), one of the most energetic explosions in the universe! The shape of the pulses encodes the information of whether they originate from explosions of massive stars, or merging of neutron stars and black holes. We need your help to flag GRBs with specific pulse shapes that will help astronomers to solve the mystery of their physical origins. Your eyes can quickly classify pulse shapes and other patterns in the data that we haven’t yet been able to teach a computer to spot.

Transition Together

Angry at the state of our waterways, and sewage dumping in our seas?

Rob Hopkins shares how 3 Transition groups along the Exe teamed up to turn outrage into local, practical action to restore, protect and celebrate their precious river.

Sustainable Tiverton, Transition Exeter and Transition Exmouth worked together to create Friends of the River Exe (FORE), a vibrant campaign to bring everyone connected to the river together, through festival events, citizen science, conservation and more.

They were supported by a partnership grant from Transition Together seedfunding, made possible by The National Lottery Community Fund and National Lottery Players.

What could you unlock when you join together with others in your area and with a little extra resource?

A protester in a wetsuit holds a cardboard sign which reads "We want to know when sewage is being discharged in real time and when its safe to swim all year round." In the background, other protesters are out of focus, but swim robes and bright orange tow floats can be seen.

📙 Interesting read!

“Conspiracy theories are inherently exciting,” says sociologist Lars de Wildt.

#Conspiracy theories and #misinformation are not just a rational problem, they have an emotional component."

"With #CitizenScience and similar approaches, #science communicators want to educate citizens to be critical and doubt truths. In unexpected and sometimes undesirable ways, conspiracy theorists are doing just that."

#PPOD: Beautiful Jupiter

The Juno mission's JunoCam has taken some lovely images in seven years at the gas giant, including this one of Jupiter's "eye" captured early on during Perijove 09. The key to these amazing pictures, however, is in the citizen scientists who process them. Learn more: https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing

Good news: #iNaturalist upgraded last night to include "Geomodel," so now you'll see "Expected Nearby" instead of "Seen Nearby." All the changes are detailed on its blog, but I especially enjoyed reading the section titled, "Future direction: Surfacing unusual observations." Now there's a way to automatically bin observations that deserve scrutiny for range expansion and misidentification. Awesome work. #nature #identification #CitizenScience #biology #photography #biogeography #software #maps #models
