Re the uptick of #ecoanxiety and #climateanxiety in the wake of the wildfires and huge levels of smoke in major cities; this was my own climate “origin story”, 3 years ago during the Australian bushfires where my then-city of Canberra had the worst air quality in the world. It is vitally important that we don’t admonish people for not waking up to the urgency and dread earlier. We need to provide solidarity and intention to grow the #climateaction movement into meaningful change.

The new El Niño phase has begun, which means the odds are very high that 2023 will be the hottest year you have ever experienced and potentially the most catastrophic.

You can watch the gif below to see the ocean rapidly warming off the coast of South America. Here's part of a story from NPR...
_____________________________

El Niño is officially here, and that means things are about to get even hotter. The natural climate phenomenon is marked by warmer ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, which drives hotter weather around the world.

"This could lead to new records for temperatures," says Michelle L'Heureux, a climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center.

The hottest years on record tend to happen during El Niño. It's one of the most obvious ways that El Niño, which is a natural climate pattern, exacerbates the effects of climate change, which is caused by humans burning fossil fuels and releasing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

But temperature superlatives obscure the bigger trend: the last 8 years were the hottest ever recorded, despite a persistent La Niña that took hold in late 2020 and only just ended, depressing global temperatures. That's how powerful human-caused warming is: it blows Earth's natural temperature variability out of the water.

A message from Greta Thunberg (@gretathunberg)...
_________________________

School strike, week 251.

Today, I graduate from school, which means I’ll no longer be able to school strike for the climate. This is then the last school strike for me, so I guess I have to write something on this day.

When I started striking in 2018 I could never have expected that it would lead to anything. After striking every day for three weeks, we were a small group of children who decided to continue doing this every Friday. And we did, which is how Fridays For Future was formed.

Some more people joined, and quite suddenly this was a global movement growing every day. During 2019, millions of youth striked from school for the climate, flooding the streets in over 180 countries. When the pandemic started, we had to find new ways to protest.

With time, we started to get back on the streets again. We’re still here, and we aren’t planning on going anywhere. Much has changed since we started, and yet we have much further to go.

We are still moving in the wrong direction, where those in power are allowed to sacrifice marginalised and affected people and the planet in the name of greed, profit and economic growth. They continue to destabilise the biosphere and our life supporting systems. We’re rapidly approaching potential nonlinear ecological and climatic tipping points beyond our control.

And in so many parts of the world, we are even speeding up the process. There are probably many of us who graduate who now wonder what kind of future it is that we are stepping into, even though we did not cause this crisis.

We who can speak up have a duty to do so. In order to change everything, we need everyone. I’ll continue to protest on Fridays, even though it’s not technically “school striking”. We simply have no other option than to do everything we possibly can. The fight has only just begun.

Book cover -- Facing the Climate Emergency, Second Edition: How to Transform Yourself with Climate Truth

By Margaret Klein Salamon
Bread and Circuses

I suppose it's no surprise that reading and learning and then passing on all the important information I can find about the climate and environmental crisis often leaves me feeling anxious and depressed.

But I'm not the only one...
____________________________

A wave of eco-anxiety, an invisible yet potent tsunami of concern, is rippling through the minds of our younger generation. According to a 2021 study presented in The Lancet, an unsettling 62% of young individuals confessed to being haunted by climate-change-induced anxiety, with a substantial 59% being very or extremely worried, while an overwhelming 84% acknowledged a moderate level of worry at the very least.

Geographical borders do not confine this unease; it's a global epidemic that infiltrates the rhythm of everyday life, with more than 45% stating that climate change apprehensions cast a shadow on their daily functioning.

The trigger of anxiety is not climate truth; it's the unsettling silence of inaction echoing against that truth. It's the chorus of climate denial, the procrastination of crucial actions, and the peddling of half-measure solutions that amplify mental distress, especially among the young generation.

The remedy for climate anxiety aligns perfectly with the answer to our climate crisis: immediate, unyielding, collective action on climate change.

Young people, pioneers of hope and resilience, are already stepping up to the plate. And following their lead are the older generations who are recalibrating their priorities, dedicating their twilight years to bringing about change, as highlighted by initiatives like the Third Act.

The missing jigsaw piece in this picture is unequivocal action from government leaders and industry behemoths. We must systematically dismantle the fossil fuel industry to guarantee our current generation, and all those who follow, the chance of a fulfilling, safe life.

However, the journey towards a climate-secure future is strewn with obstacles. Fierce resistance from industry, seemingly more committed to their shareholders than the survival of our species, particularly the fossil fuel conglomerates and their banking benefactors, steepens our path forward.

To navigate this challenge, we must take care of our mental well-being here and now.

Greta Thunberg (@gretathunberg), on page 355 of The Climate Book...
_______________________

The school strike movement is based on climate justice. We seek to shine a light on the intergenerational impacts of climate change and the need for equity for the most affected people in the most affected areas. We are not a political organization, we are a grassroots movement dedicated to spreading awareness and information. We are not interested in compromises or deals. We tell it like it is.

For this, we are receiving unimaginable amounts of hate and threats. We are being mocked, bullied, and ridiculed. And for pointing out that our political leaders have spent 30 years debating this while our emission levels have done nothing but keep on rising, there are elected officials who have called us “a threat to democracy.”

Perhaps this level of political desperation should not come as a surprise, since over one third of our anthropogenic CO2 emissions have occurred since 2005. There are leaders who have been in charge of some of our major emitting nations for large periods of that time. Imagine how their historic responsibilities will be viewed in the future.

We can have one of two things — but not both.

We can either have a society that tolerates millionaires and billionaires polluting the planet and destroying the biosphere. Or we can have a planet with a healthy biosphere but with fewer millionaires and no billionaires at all.

This is from a recently published peer-reviewed scientific paper titled “Millionaire Spending Incompatible with 1.5 C Ambitions”...
______________________

Much evidence suggests that the wealthiest individuals contribute disproportionately to climate change. Here we study the implications of a continued growth in the number of millionaires for emissions, and its impact on the depletion of the remaining carbon budget to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Our findings suggest that the share of millionaires in the world population will grow from 0.7% today to 3.3% in 2050, and cause accumulated emissions equivalent to 72% of the remaining carbon budget. This significantly reduces the chance of stabilizing climate change at 1.5°C.

The concentration of wealth at the top means that a significant share of the remaining carbon budget to 1.5°C is depleted by a very small share of humanity. This comparably small group is also likely to invest its wealth in ways that further increase emissions.

Continued growth in emissions at the top makes a low-carbon transition less likely, as the acceleration of energy consumption by the wealthiest is likely beyond the system's capacity to decarbonize. To this end, we question whether policy designs such as progressive taxes targeting the high emitters will be sufficient.

Is it time to panic?

From Discover Magazine --

Even the scientists are shocked and afraid of what's happening. I doubt they will panic, but maybe it's time that our leaders did.

As Greta Thunberg has said --

"Adults keep saying, 'We owe it to the young people to give them hope.' But I don't want your hope. I don't want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day, and then I want you to ACT."

The sun is setting over the ocean. Sky looks red, water reflects orange glow from sky. It gives a feeling of oppressive heat.
