The world is on track to have burned more coal, oil and gas in 2023 than it did in 2022, according to a report by the Global Carbon Project, pumping 1.1% more planet-heating carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at a time when emissions must plummet to stop extreme weather from growing more violent.

Fossil fuels are today’s weapons of mass destruction, representing an existential threat.

Richer nations that benefited the most from coal, oil and gas extraction should commit to ending, equitably, the era of fossil fuels.

Not when global greenhouse gas emissions are primarily about generating electricity and heat (around 38%), non-aviation transport (21%), and agriculture (23%).

At worst, the focus on individuals may even be purposeful distraction.

Hello Fediverse, hello Bits&Baeume,

I’ve moved recently, time for a (re)introduction — and a heartfelt Thank You! to @ben

Heat is making our planet uninhabitable. Why isn't this the top news story around the world?

Recent study finds that millions will be displaced as #ClimateChange makes their regions too hot to live

By Matthew Rozsa
Staff Writer
Published October 16, 2023

"In the 1973 sci-fi movie '#SoylentGreen,' the year 2022 is depicted as a world so ravaged by pollution that the temperature never drops below 90°F (32°C). Food is scarce; millions of people are homeless and crowd together in hallways just to sleep; the government has become overtly authoritarian. While things are not currently that bad (at least not yet), studies on climate change repeatedly indicate that the heat-based premise of 'Soylent Green' is rapidly becoming close to reality.

"Why is this not universally regarded as the biggest news story in the world?

"Consider a study published last week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), which studied #Wetbulb temperatures (meaning the temperature measured by a wet thermometer in the shade as water evaporates off it). If wet bulb temperatures exceed 31°C (88°F), people cannot consistently perform physical labor without endangering their lives; in temperatures that exceed 35°C (95°F), a healthy human can die within a few hours without access to water or shelter. The authors of the PNAS study analyzed 'wet-bulb temperature thresholds across a range of air temperatures and relative humidities' using bias-corrected climate change models. Their conclusions were sobering...

The Midwest US could be a hotspot for deadly ‘moist heat stress’ as global temperatures climb

Large parts of the world, including China and the Midwest US, are on track to become too hot for humans to handle as accelerating global temperatures expose billions to heat and humidity so extreme their bodies will no longer be able to cope, according to a new study.

By Rachel Ramirez, CNN
Published Oct 9, 2023

"At 3 degrees — which the study authors say is the most likely level of warming by 2100 if no action is taken — there is a sharp increase in people exposed to life-threatening heat and humidity. 'It’s really incredibly disturbing,' Huber told CNN.

"Humid #heatwaves will affect swaths of the world not used to such #extreme conditions.

"The #Midwest US will become a 'moist heat stress hotspot' at 3 degrees of warming, according to the report. The Midwest is susceptible to this kind of heat stress in part because its climate walks the line between dry and humid, Huber explained, allowing the region’s heat to push into the danger zone on very humid days.

"Another factor that makes the region vulnerable is its agriculture and the phenomenon called 'corn sweat,' Huber said.

"'The plants that we eat are sweating through evapotranspiration, and that may be adding to the humidity above what would normally be there,' he said.

"So-called 'hot hours' — times where heat and #humidity are especially life-threatening — will be concentrated in the #Missouri and #MississippiRiver valleys but also elsewhere in US including the #GulfOfMexico coast and the #AtlanticSeaboard according to the study.

"At 4 degrees of warming, the study’s worst-case scenario, researchers found that 1.5 billion people around the world would face a month of moist heat stress each year, and roughly 2.7 billion people will experience at least a week of these extreme conditions.

"Parts of #Yemen could experience heat and humidity that exceeds human tolerance for more than 300 days a year, making it virtually uninhabitable."

Middle America Will Soon Be Too Hot to Live in, Scientists Predict

Story by Robyn White, 10/10/2023

Daniel Vecellio, who performed the study: "I don't think that it was shocking that with continued warming, we would reach these lower wet-bulb temperature thresholds in more regions across the globe more frequently, but some of the magnitudes of the yearly exposure to uncompensable heat stress were sobering to see"

- The section of the United States from Florida to New York and Houston to Chicago could get so hot that humans would not be able to withstand the heat if the planet continues to warm past 3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

- At 3 degrees Celsius warming, a large part of the Indus Valley and coastal region of the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea could possibly see over two months and even more than three months of uncompensable heat stress on average every year

- As human-induced climate change continues, the Earth will only continue to warm. Scientists believe it could be only a matter of time before the planet reaches a point beyond the point that a human could withstand

"the World Bank predicts that climate change will compel as many as 216 million people to move elsewhere in their countries by 2050; other reports suggest that more than one billion people will become refugees because of the impacts of a warming planet on developing countries"

We have somehow to find homes for that billion people. How many can your community welcome?

@TSAguilar46 Well, that's true of course. During the 'migration period' huge populations, relative to the global population at the time, were on the move westward out of central Asia. However, in absolute numbers, my claim is correct: the migration of those displaced by the #ClimateCatastrophe over the next four decades will be unprecedented.

As a statistician, I am used to looking at data.

But there are some days when you see data that make you stop and loudly exclaim "WTF???"

Today is one of those days.

Hundreds of theatre-goers who could afford expensive tickets to be inspired by musical portrayal of liberation from destructive and life-threatening oppression, dismayed by actual attempts to liberate planet from destructive and life-threatening oppression that interrupted their entertainment

"Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!" 🎵
