Translated into the deep background of the #sff universe, there's really only this: A high-heat storm kills a secondary character's mother—who will incidentally be another secondary character's second love-of-his-life. His life is totally tragic. [Any more would be spoilers.] The main character experienced the steaming storm in her childhood, but from safer ground, and helped cleanup in the aftermath, which provides a sense of commonality within the story.
Maybe I should name the storm Cyclone McMuffin?

Capitalists hate Greta Thunberg, because she has done more to bring attention to their evil and unjust ways than anyone else ever has. Starting out as an insignificant schoolgirl, somehow she's accomplished what nobody else could. So they hate her.
Oh, of course, they'll *pretend* to admire Greta. They've invited her to important conferences and given her the chance to speak, then smiled and applauded her — but gone straight ahead with Business As Usual, ignoring her concerns.
That's why she has refused more recent opportunities to speak at events hosted by the rich and powerful. She realizes they're only using her to make themselves look good.

Siberia contains the world's largest stands of boreal forests, which (in normal conditions) capture and store millions of tons of carbon not only in the trees, but within soils, peatlands, and especially in permafrost.
But in recent years, Siberia has experienced the planet's largest ever wildfires.
Now, Siberia is enduring their worst heat wave in recorded history.
Thawing Siberian permafrost is releasing huge amounts of methane, CO2, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere.

Academics have figured out just how much the gluttony of the Global North is costing poorer countries in the Global South.
And it's a LOT of money.

Countries like the United States and those in Europe could be on the hook for an eye-popping $170 trillion in climate reparations for their excessive carbon emissions, according to new research from the University of Leeds.
The study highlights inequities in the remaining carbon that the world can emit before invoking even more catastrophic climate events. Wealthier countries like the U.S, United Kingdom, and Germany are not only responsible for the largest share of current and historic emissions, but they are also on track to overshoot their existing carbon budgets, or the amount that the world can emit before exceeding the current global target of 1.5 degrees C (about 2.7 degrees F) of warming.
“The problem is that the Global North would be overshooting its collective fair share of the 1.5-degree carbon budget by nearly three times,” said Andrew Fanning, the study’s lead author. “And, of course, if some countries are overshooting, then other countries need to pick up the slack.”
The study found that the U.S. would be responsible for the largest share — $80 trillion — for its excess emissions, which would be paid out to historically low emitters like India and China as well as regions like sub-Saharan Africa. The oversized carbon footprint of wealthier nations has been an ongoing roadblock in the race to cut emissions and curb the worst impacts of climate change. Researchers sought to quantify how much excess emissions would cost and used the existing framework from the IPCC to price out the difference in emissions.
“Some countries have used far more than their fair share, while others essentially lose parts of their fair share,” said Fanning. “And that is unjust.”

The president of COP28, Sultan Al Jaber, has been accused of attempting to “greenwash” his image after it emerged that members of his team had edited Wikipedia pages that highlighted his role as CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc).
Work by Al Jaber’s team on his and the climate summit’s Wikipedia entries include adding a quote from an editorial that said Al Jaber – the United Arab Emirates minister for industry and advanced technology – was “precisely the kind of ally the climate movement needs”. They also suggested that editors remove reference to a multibillion-dollar oil pipeline deal he signed in 2019.
“Oil companies and their CEOs are taking greenwash to a whole new level – seizing control of global climate conferences, then getting their own employees to airbrush out criticism of their blatant hypocrisy on Wikipedia,” said Caroline Lucas, the Green Party MP.
Al Jaber’s role as both CEO of Adnoc and COP28 president is at the centre of the controversy. The company is forging a major expansion of the UAE’s fossil fuel output despite the International Energy Agency having said there must be no new oil and gas projects if the world is to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. A series of edits to Al Jaber’s Wikipedia page since March last year reveal the extent to which his team has tried to control public perception of his record in the fossil fuel industry.
A Wikipedia user, whose identity is unknown but who disclosed they were being paid by Adnoc, suggested editors remove the reference to a $4 billion agreement Al Jaber signed in 2019 with US investment giants BlackRock and KKR for the development of oil pipeline infrastructure. The user said there was “too much detail” and suggested the page say that Al Jaber had simply attracted “international investment” in Adnoc.
More recently, Ramzi Haddad, the head of marketing for COP28, has been directly editing Wikipedia articles, despite having been “strongly discouraged” from doing so.

El Niño is officially here, and that means things are about to get even hotter. The natural climate phenomenon is marked by warmer ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, which drives hotter weather around the world.
"This could lead to new records for temperatures," says Michelle L'Heureux, a climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center.
The hottest years on record tend to happen during El Niño. It's one of the most obvious ways that El Niño, which is a natural climate pattern, exacerbates the effects of climate change, which is caused by humans burning fossil fuels and releasing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
But temperature superlatives obscure the bigger trend: the last 8 years were the hottest ever recorded, despite a persistent La Niña that took hold in late 2020 and only just ended, depressing global temperatures. That's how powerful human-caused warming is: it blows Earth's natural temperature variability out of the water.

School strike, week 251.
Today, I graduate from school, which means I’ll no longer be able to school strike for the climate. This is then the last school strike for me, so I guess I have to write something on this day.
When I started striking in 2018 I could never have expected that it would lead to anything. After striking every day for three weeks, we were a small group of children who decided to continue doing this every Friday. And we did, which is how Fridays For Future was formed.
Some more people joined, and quite suddenly this was a global movement growing every day. During 2019, millions of youth striked from school for the climate, flooding the streets in over 180 countries. When the pandemic started, we had to find new ways to protest.
With time, we started to get back on the streets again. We’re still here, and we aren’t planning on going anywhere. Much has changed since we started, and yet we have much further to go.
We are still moving in the wrong direction, where those in power are allowed to sacrifice marginalised and affected people and the planet in the name of greed, profit and economic growth. They continue to destabilise the biosphere and our life supporting systems. We’re rapidly approaching potential nonlinear ecological and climatic tipping points beyond our control.
And in so many parts of the world, we are even speeding up the process. There are probably many of us who graduate who now wonder what kind of future it is that we are stepping into, even though we did not cause this crisis.
We who can speak up have a duty to do so. In order to change everything, we need everyone. I’ll continue to protest on Fridays, even though it’s not technically “school striking”. We simply have no other option than to do everything we possibly can. The fight has only just begun.

I was going to share a news story about the UK training more specialists in the fire brigades to deal with wildfires and say something about it being costlier to live with ever worsening climate change than to do something about it.
Then I saw this - Labour saying that they have to be “responsible” and that spending to protect everyone’s future is “reckless”. Jesus wept.

Phase One: Our living standards peak, after *centuries* of rising. They begin to fall — but it’s a slow, gentle descent, like a glider. Right now, you can maybe keep up, if you struggle, the way most are. You can try to maintain some semblance of yesterday’s living standards by going deeper into debt, or adjusting your consumption basket, or changing your habits here and there, like shopping at cheaper places. But prices are skyrocketing, inflation’s ultra high, interest rates are crippling. We hit our limits of supply at a civilizational level, but demand of course keeps rising.
Phase Two: We cross the threshold of planetary tipping points, on a mega-scale. There’s plenty of evidence that’s already happening, for many of them — from the Amazon, to the boreal forests, to the polar ice. When we cross that threshold, things get much worse. Warming speeds up. That’s when things really begin to fall apart. Inflation. Shortages. Interest rates. Bank failures. Water and food systems just… fail. Living standards begin to crash, hard and fast. That gentle, glider-like descent becomes more like a jumbo jet going into free fall. Where do you keep your money if you don’t know which bank will fail? What do you do when there’s just no food on the shelves? Where do you live if nobody will insure entire regions and states?
So what happens in Phase Three? It’s anybody’s guess, really. Probably, at that point, democracy’s a distant memory, the world’s made of nations which are more like fortresses, mega-weather decimates them regularly, rendering any kind of industrial age living standards a luxury only for the giga rich, and the rest live something much more like people did in the early industrial age. Think of Dickens novels and you get the picture. Then cross them with Orwell and Arendt, because remember, there’s no more democracy. Then cross them with Atwood, because the fanatics take over. And that’s being kind, I think.
That’s a lot. Don’t focus on Phase Three. That’s when we’re deep, deep into Extinction — and through inaction and folly, we’ve let things spiral out of control. Right now? Our job is still trying to prevent Phase Two, runaway warming, tipping points really being hit any harder than they are currently. If we do that, there’s something to salvage. If we don’t, though — well, that’s where we are now.

If you're looking for a villain to blame for this smoke, it's us driving pointlessly large cars, subsidizing fossil fuel extraction, and building houses so large we need two routers to get wifi in the whole place. The villain is us, not some camper who may or may not have been careless with a campfire. Even if there was a camper, it's climate change that created the conditions for this kind of burn. This was well predicted since at least the 90s so don't even pretend we didn't know.
We are the bad guys of this story. If we want to fix this, we have to take power away from the .001% and honestly, even if we put it in the hands of the 1%, we would have better outcomes.

Greenhouse gas emissions have reached an all-time high, threatening to push the world into unprecedented levels of global heating, scientists have warned.
Only about 250 billion tons of carbon dioxide can now be emitted, to avoid the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere that would raise temperatures by 1.5C. That is down from 500 billion tons just a few years ago, and at current annual rates of greenhouse gas emissions, of about 54 billion tons per year over the past decade, it would run out well before the end of this decade.

Wow. At the rate we're going, the world's entire "carbon budget" will be used up less than five years from now.
And that's not even counting the fact that some actual emissions are *excluded* from the official reporting figures submitted by countries.
For example, the decision of whether to report military emissions — and how to calculate them — is left up to individual countries, per the 2015 Paris Accords. So, although research has found that the US military emits more CO2 than entire nations like Portugal and Denmark, and that the Department of Defense accounts for nearly 80% of the federal government’s fuel consumption, there's no guarantee that these figures are counted within the remaining "carbon budget." How much would you bet that the US is underreporting its military emissions? Of course they are.

Across the world, many countries underreport their greenhouse gas emissions in their reports to the United Nations, a Washington Post investigation has found. An examination of 196 country reports reveals a giant gap between what nations declare their emissions to be vs. the greenhouse gases they are sending into the atmosphere.
The gap comprises vast amounts of missing carbon dioxide and methane emissions as well as smaller volumes of powerful synthetic gases. It is the result of questionably drawn rules, incomplete reporting in some countries, and apparently willful mistakes in others — and the fact that in some cases, humanity’s full impacts on the planet are not even required to be reported.
A key area of controversy is that many countries attempt to offset the emissions from burning fossil fuels by claiming that carbon is absorbed by land within their borders. UN rules allow countries, such as China, Russia, and the United States, each to subtract more than half a billion tons of annual emissions in this manner, and in the future could allow these and other countries to continue to release significant emissions while claiming to be “net zero.”

Is there a scientific consensus in #climate communication as to which emotions are most effective at mobilizing people to act?
As a #solarpunk enthusiast, my inclination is to communicate hope and stories of success.
At the same time, I see many activists still embracing Greta's "I want you all to panic".
A quick search has brought mixed results, and I'm not an expert!
While you have to give credit to The Guardian for running Simon Evans' rebuttal to Rowan Atkinson's wibble about electric vehicles last week, it does beg the question of why they ran his opinion piece without proper fact-checking it in the first place.
Because you can be sure that Atkinson's genial celebrity status will ensure his views remain far more widely read & disseminated than the rebuttal.
99% of people who read this will go and hop in their car and use its two tons to drag their fat arse to the shops. "Bus? Me? What? Bike? Me? You're joking?"

An uncomfortable truth is that the smoky air that many of us on the east coast in Canada and the US are experiencing, meming, and sarcastically commenting on has been a daily reality for 100s of millions of people in the two most populous countries in the world for years and years.
