This week for Insights I wrote about the new "junk food law" in #Colombia that carries with it an interesting ultra-processed food tax. The goal is to use the revenue generated by said tax to subsidize healthier options. The #VAT system means it would result in the prices on healthy options *at the shelf* being lower. Pretty cool.
It will target ultra-processed foods with an additional 10% surcharge, which will increase to 20% in ’25.

Another gorgeous weevil from #Colombia I wasn't able to narrow down an ID on this one. I think it may be closely related to the big orange and black one I posted a few weeks ago. If you know, please tell me.

I'm pretty sure the large ant is trap jaw ant (Odontomachus erythrocephalus) but would appreciate any help on the little lady walking across its face.

It was too much like cheating... Here is the spider it was on. This was taken at 1.4x as that was as wide as I could go with the MP-E. I believe this was a tarantula, but please correct me if it isn't. It didn't seem to care at all that there were hoppers on it. Yes, there was a second of a different species. *Shrug*
Here's a crazy orbweaver for you. I believe this is an immature spider in the genus Wagneriana. I would have loved to have found one of the adults as they are totally bonkers. I believe this little fella will go on to develop all kinds of crazy bulges, bulbs, and spikes on its abdomen!
This is a cobweb spider from Tatama Cloud Forest in #Colombia. It is in the genus Chrysso which are known for their flashy colors. Some can even change color as a warning mechanism. Sorry about the blurriness. I've only been practicing photography for 20 years...

"#Colombia was the deadliest country and a fifth of the 177 recorded killings took place in the Amazon rainforest, says Global Witness.
At least 177 people were killed last year for defending the environment, according to new figures, with a fifth of killings taking place in the Amazon #rainforest.
Murdered by organised crime groups and land invaders, environmental defenders were killed at a rate of one every other day in 2022, figures from the NGO Global Witness show. Colombia was the most deadly country, recording 60 murders.
#Indigenous communities were disproportionately represented in the figures, making up 34% of all murders, despite representing about 5% of the world’s population. The new figures mean that at least 1,910 environmental defenders have been killed between 2012 and 2022, according to Global Witness, with most of the murders going unpunished.
#Brazil, #Mexico, #Honduras and the #Philippines were the most deadly countries in 2022 after Colombia.
Almost 90% of all killings were recorded in Latin America."
