No #algorithm to #control,
No #EchoChamber to #Patrol,
Just #open #communication,
And less #manipulation,
With Mastodon, it's a different role.
I find it deeply troubling to see no signs having emerged as yet, regarding the #press finding out how to maintain an objective informative position in the face of forces clearly & openly exploiting it to spread malicious, aggressively stupid bullshit.
Again: Objective - NOT neutral. Even if neutrality was possible, which it fucking isn't, that isn't the job. The press is obliged to be biased in favor of facts.

@MW1CFN I'm not sure if FT8 can be said to be "communication". It completes the minimum amount required for QSO (exchange callsign and report), but that's it. That's communication, but really limited.
But FT8 sure is effective way to complete long distance QSOs.
Am still sorting my thoughts on this recent AI explosion, but it has its practical uses. I had a longish online conversation with someone just now, in French. I don't speak French & they know little English. It went down just fine on both sides. I used Google Translate to read their comments & convert my side into their language. 🙂🙂

A complex, but consistent question we get in space science research is "why should we continue to fund this type of science when we can resolve real-world issues here on Earth?". It's a valid question.
But the thing is - sometimes, pure science leads to global applications that benefit billions. Radio Astronomy gave us Wi-Fi. Extremophile studies gave us PCR tests for the pandemic.
I always love sharing these types of real-world applications stories.
Recently, an Aussie-based company called Quasar Satellite Technologies, has taken phased-array feed tech from CSIRO's radio telescope, ASKAP, and worked out a way to use the tech to communicate with multiple satellites at once per ground station. Given how many satellites are going up - this is that kind of game-changing tech we want to see. They've just secured their next round of funding.

I am studying #engineering, and we have compulsory #humanities and #philosophy modules to help develop our #ethics and actually thinking about products we develop. We later then had #law, #ethic modules, and #communication specific to engineering. They were frustrating at the time. But today, I can look back, and I am thankful.
Instant messaging is ephemeral and should be treated as such. Don't waste your energy trying to back up chats, move them to different platforms, etc.
Do the responsible thing and move any important information to a permanent location.
Do we really need to keep our entire conversation histories on our phone?

It was recently explained to me that when I try to express mild #friendship interest in someone, it comes across as being cold / disinterested, but when I try to express strong friendship interest in someone, it's usually misinterpreted as a crush / #romantic interest. 😭

I'm always interested in words for colors, and I found this article particularly fascinating: Apparently, warm colors are easier to communicate than cool colors (based on how quickly someone can pick the correct color chip when given clues).
Today I worked on a blog post about inclusive science communication, and #TIL: “It is a sobering fact that some 90% of papers that have been published in academic journals are never cited. Indeed, as many as 50% of papers are never read by anyone besides their authors, referees, and journal editors.”
