The harder it is for users to leave a service, the easier it is for the factions within a company to best their rivals in the debate over whether they should be allowed to make the service worse.
That’s what changed. That’s what’s different. Tech didn’t get worse because techies got worse. Tech got worse because the condition of the external world made it easier for the worst techies to win arguments.
A new, good internet is possible and worth fighting for. After all, the internet is a powerful and crucial force in our lives, a single conduit for free speech, a free press, free association; and access to education, family, civics, politics, health, employment, romance, and more.
The enshittified giants of the internet may be beyond redemption. Perhaps they have become so corrupted, piled up so much sin and callous disregard for human thriving, that all that is left is to burn them to the ground."

"A particularly damaging batch of fraudulent notices targeted more than 35,000 URLs operated by a Google customer that spends tens of millions of dollars per year on Google search ads. The effect was a significant drop in traffic during the holiday season, revenue losses for the customer and its sellers of $5 million, and a loss to Google of between $2 and $3 million."

Traditionally, the goal was to prevent consolidation because the reduction in competition was seen to be bad. This is the approach that led to breaking up Standard Oil and AT&T, among others.
Since the 1980s, anti-competitive conduct was tolerated if there were short-term benefits to consumers, spelled out in Bork's 1978 book "The Antitrust Paradox".

⟨ "The American Civil Liberties Union (#ACLU), Center for Democracy & Technology (#CDT), Electronic Frontier Foundation (#EFF), and Electronic Privacy Information Center (#EPIC) submit these comments in response to the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) notice of proposed rulemaking on a REAL ID requirement waiver for state-issued mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs). TSA is proposing to establish a case-by-case system for exempting state mobile driver’s license programs from REAL ID Act requirements and to impose an interim set of standards for mDLs drawn from various federal government information technology standards and standards proposed by private industry groups.
❖ The current state of digital identity is immature and cannot support even interim adoption of mDLs in a privacy-preserving manner.
❖ An American identity standard must not only be secure and privacy-protective, but also completely open.
❖ Demand for mDLs is overstated and does not justify this interim rulemaking.
❖ TSA risks unintentionally triggering early technology lock-in by accepting mDLs before standards are fully developed, precisely the harms TSA seeks to avoid.
❖ TSA should be careful not to overstep its regulatory authority under the REAL ID Modernization Act by adopting interim standards.
❖ TSA’s 19 chosen standards are not sufficient to guarantee privacy and often display a serious lack of transparency. " ⟩
As noted in the comments "The implications of the TSA’s decisions here potentially reach far beyond the airport context, extending to the process for how people present ID in every small town and city in America for decades to come."
Highly recommended reading!
As @superwuster demonstrated in 2021 when he wrote Biden's #ExecutiveOrder on Promoting #Competition in the American Economy, the administrative agencies have sweeping, grossly underutilized powers that can make a huge difference to everyday Americans' lives:
The world in 2025 as seen from 1975: part 1/5

There will be no thoughts of, or even such words as #business #competition, #money, or #lies for such phenomena will be historically extinct. Such words as #politics, #war, #weapons, #debt will be only of historical significance."
"The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has launched an investigation into the #CloudComputing market, motivated by concerns that the Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure duopoly might be limiting #competition in the market"
Does science need heroes or does it need to reform? I elaborate on this in a blog post, based on a talk I gave at the recent Rijksmuseum Boerhaave symposium on Prize Cultures. Idolizing heroes can worsen #bias, #inequality, and #competition in science. Yet, it does require good #leadership to ignite structural change. https://www.leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/does-science-need-heroes
economics of group production
Rewards = f( contribution ie participation)
participation = g( inclusion)
inclusion = h( p- fraction of unfairly distributed resources you possess)
p = i( all the biases and profiling prevailing in a group)
So a group's inner #competition about the resources conferred to him , is fundamentally about accepting the prevailing hierarchy, no competition for entering it can change that.
your individual strength or weakness is your individual concern , unless it becomes a valid means of production and contribution, to establish any alternative exchange requires your identity from that
only alternative for that is to figure out where you think can go far, with that and find the group on that way which shares it ( if at all) for required cooperation to go further.
side note = #internet is a revolution , it can do more, when its free from the flaws above , imposed upon it , by them , for them
its primarily why next gen doesnt follow tradition

And then we're back at the problem of benevolent dictatorship: they invariably become mere dictatorships in short order.
What's more, a hierarchical society incentivises #competition .
Hierarchies force everyone to compete. Either for a higher position, or to avoid losing position: in a hierarchy, those at the bottom are at the mercy of the more powerful.

@badlogic good job, well done. I recall that there was a website in the UK that did supermarket price comparisons, but it was shut down via copyright law: the supermarkets licence product images from a third party so when the guy used the same images as the supermarkets to.illustrate the price comparisons, he was threatened by the product image company and forced to shut down.

Some U.S. senators believe this is the case and have proposed what they think is a viable solution — a bill that would essentially require social media platforms with over 100 million monthly users to make user data portable and interoperable with other platforms.
