"All problems in #computerscience can be solved by another level of indirection."

My favorite project methodology is to make a tiny program that does almost nothing.

Then slide a level of indirection in to cover more cases.

Then iterate.

Sometimes that's all you need. Sometimes you also refactor to hide all that churn and make yourself look smart.

Bret Victor's "Future of Computing" talk is approaching its 10th birthday, so here it is for folks who may have missed it first time around: https://invidious.zapashcanon.fr/watch?v=8pTEmbeENF4

> The '60s and early '70s were a fertile time for #computerscience ideas, reminds Victor, but even more importantly, it was a time of unfettered thinking, unconstrained by programming #dogma, #authority, and #tradition. 'The most dangerous thought that you can have as a #creative person is to think that you know what you're doing,' explains Victor. 'Because once you think you know what you're doing you stop looking around for other ways of doing things and you stop being able to see other ways of doing things. You become blind.' He concludes, 'I think you have to say: "We don't know what programming is. We don't know what computing is. We don't even know what a computer is." And once you truly understand that, and once you truly believe that, then you're free, and you can think anything.'"

#permacomputing #retrocomouting

A video still showing a wide shot of Bret Victor on stage, dressed as an IBM drone of the period, with his arms raised. Behind and above him is a giant projection from an overhead projector [1] showing a transparency with the text "The Future of Programming - Bret Victor".

AI / Machine Learning:

This is a video from a 2018 keynote presentation from Professor James Mickens (Harvard) on AI. He discusses the challenges that computer scientists face with machine learning in a way that is both highly entertaining as well as informative.

It's done in a way where even the more technical portions of his presentation are presented with humor and explained in a way that i think is suited well for those wanting to understand more in how it all works, as well as those who do as they might find it entertaining still.

Fast forward to 2023 and the world we live in and this video still stands as a great presentation on this subject. It's one of my favorite videos i've seen on YT so i'm sharing it here today for anyone interested in watching it.

Much though I like Edinburgh I would think it far better to go and visit the distilleries and sample the product in the area it was produced. Get a driver (or non-drinking friend) and plot a route. Stay and eat locally. There's a host of good hotels and restaurants throughout Scotland. I have to believe that this is what Iain Banks would have wanted you to do.
It may even end up costing you less than Rocco Forte charges you to listen to the trains and traffic.
When I visited St. Andrews Computer Science they were working from a Honeywell Mainframe and programming in Algol. At least Edinburgh had punch card readers.

The drawback of reading Iain Banks’s “Raw Spirit” whisky tour book is I now have a very long list of whiskies I want to try! What ARE lenses anyways? I remember reading about them almost a decade ago when I was learning #Haskell, but I wasn't mature enough to really understand them.

I could probably just read about them now that I'm older, but I'm about to go run and if I'm lucky asking this starts a little discussion.

So: what are lenses, and why should I care? I'm interested both from the angle of a category theorist and from a programmer, and any other angle someone comes up with.

And why not, here's some tags to try and get some other folks in the conversation too! I can't be the only person interested in this.

For summer class prep, I've been updating my CS 200 programming exercises so that they're designed for a group of 2-3 students. To do this, each program in an exercise has a version A, B, and C, and each student will tackle one of em - that way, if one student goes MIA, their lack of work won't affect the others.

This also means that the exercises need to cover the same stuff but different programs.

Are people in the #ComputerScience community thinking of organized responses to the anti-trans legislation in Florida, Texas and elsewhere in the US? There's the new "bathroom" law in Florida, which will force trans people to use the wrong (and unsafe) restrooms in government buildings, including state universities.

USPTO opens opportunities to practice before the agency by evolving admissions criteria for patent bar

On October 18, 2022, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published a Federal Register Notice (FRN) requesting public input on whether to modify the scientific and technical criteria for admission to practice in all patent matters. Per the General Requirements Bulletin for Admission to the Examination for Registration to Practice in Patent Cases Before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (GRB), there are three categories of technical and scientific qualifications that typically make applicants eligible to sit for the registration examination in order to practice in all patent matters: (1) Category A for specified bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degrees; (2) Category B for other bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degrees with technical and scientific training; and (3) Category C for practical engineering or scientific experience.

I'm convinced that this is the most important rule in all of #ComputerScience

Dan Friedman:
"#Lisp had an operator called map, and you'd give it a function,

(map f _)

and so we decided we wanted to give it a bunch of functions, like...

(map (f1 f2 ...) _)

...and so for each of these functions we would give it a list, like:

(map (f1 f2 ...) (l1 l2 ...))

Now we started to run into trouble bcs some of these guys were of different sizes.

Some of them would be like this:

/\
\/

and some of them would be like this:

/------\
|------|
|------|
\------/

or like this...

[....]
[....]
[....]

...and so on.

So we came up with a rule to manage that.

That rule was called the #GuillotineRule

The Guillontine Rule stated that everybody loses their head...

------/------\---------
/oo\ |-o o--| [.0 0.]
———————————————————————
\--/ |------| [.....]

Interesting tidbit from FiveThirtyEight:

“Sad news for us data nerds: According to respondents of a recently released December YouGov poll, #statistics was ranked the least interesting college major, with 42 percent of adults calling it ‘not interesting.’ Criminal justice had the lowest percentage of respondents who called it ‘not interesting,’ at just 18 percent. When respondents were asked which majors they would pick if they were pursuing a college degree today, a plurality (20 percent) chose #computerscience.”

The full poll results are here: https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/8nv9pr6ke6/results_College%20Majors.pdf

Almost surely, a lot of those students who think computer science is interesting, but statistics isn’t, are planning on careers in “#datascience,” #ML / #AI, etc. So here comes yet another generation of computer scientists who will badly reinvent statistics instead of learning the field from the ground up. Great.

So despite being in charge and ultimately the guy who decided to get my entire company using JIRA I must admit… I hate it… As with many GUIs just way too much clicking and waiting and im too impatient.

Anyway, so I decided to install jira-cli ( https://github.com/ankitpokhrel/jira-cli ) and I cant tell you how much nicer this is, certainly improves my stress levels…

If anyone is curious this is what a full workflow from ticket creation to completion looks like for me. Keep in mind if you are on a JIRA instance that isnt customized you can probably get by with fewer steps.

myjira issue create -pSYS -tTask -s”Configure jira cli w/ aliases” -b”Add to nixos config and create some helper scripts for commands” -yHigh

myjira issue assign SYS-125 “jeff@scentech-medical.com”
myjira issue move SYS-125 “Start Work”

myjira issue worklog add SYS-125 2h –comment “Started reading up on the subject” –no-input
