In probably the most *extra* conference talk I’ve given (so far!), I looked back on my life as a Rubyist _and_ introduced the dry-rb/Hanami ecosystem while fully inhabiting the high fantasy world of Ultima IV. Together, we played and won “Rubinnia: Quest of the Rubyist!”
It was the opening keynote for the first @rubyconfth, and I think it turned out great. This was right before COVID upended everything. It feels like such a shame I haven’t been able to do it again!

SFN is my favorite meeting. The key is to see SFN as a deconstructed meeting, where everyone gets to create their own experience.
Because every neuroscience question is at SFN, we can all find our own paths through it. I can spend a morning talking addiction, go to lunch with a striatal colleague, and then spend an afternoon talking hippocampus. And then spend the evening talking neuroeconomics. Someone else might spend the morning in drosophila head direction systems and the afternoon talking rat navigation with me. Everyone finds their own path through SFN.
The problem I see people having with SFN is that they treat it like a normal conference. It's not. It's more like a chance to swim in a great science ocean and to see lots of friends from many different communities. If you go into SFN trying to see specific things, you'll likely fail and hate it. But if you go with the zen attitude of "I'm going to see some great science for a few days", then it's a wonderful meeting.
Just paid and fully registered for the #SHARP #bookHistory #conference which this year is #streaming online via #Zoom with recordings and catchup available. So good for #chronicIllness #disabled academic me, who sleeps up to 18 hours a day now from progressive #neuro disease. Also great for time zone differences, and zero infection risk. With luck I will be able to watch lots, if not always live.
Looking at the wildfires in #Halifax, Nova Scotia and staggered at how close they are to where we were in the city. A sports club has just burned down which is just a few streets away. Bring:
* Comfy footwear
* water and snacks
* Some questions you can ask random people so that you have an excuse to meet them
Don't bring
* Work ( don't try to do your normal work as you are in the conference, you kind of do neither well)
