In the deepening twilight of post sunset, we are standing beside a large lake, looking over a tangled thicket of leafy plants and wildflowers. Both this shore and the wooded far shore are mostly silhouetted in the fading light. I thought that it has rained a lot in Hartford this year, and if my reading of this data is correct, it looks like we have gotten 50% more rain this year than last year (almost 60 inches vs 40 inches). That's quite a jump.

So my furnace kicked in this morning. We keep the thermostat pretty low (62F) in early Fall so that it does not kick in if the temperatures drop just a little bit ... but we must have dropped quite a bit overnight for the house to reach 62F this morning.

Beneath a clear whitewashed evening sky, we are standing in the shade atop a rocky cliff with patches of low, scrubby vegetation. The forest begins just to our right, these trees are also in shade. The sprawling valley several hundred feet below is dappled with gold-tinged evening sunshine and lengthening shadows. Near the far horizon is the city of New Haven. Past that are Long Island Sound and Long Island, New York, visible as blue gray and golden brown strips along that horizon. Many scattered buildings are visible in the valley below, but also wide swaths of forest, most of the trees sporting gold and orange fall foliage.

Standing on a point of land a few feet above the spot where a large lake splits into 2 smaller coves. A thicket of small green shrubs grows along the edge, as do the trunks of several pine and hemlock trees. Their fallen needles soften the partially exposed roots and rocks of the ground we stand on. A dense forest surrounds the lake. Banks of clouds cover most of the far horizon. The rest of the sky is a deep blue, mirrored on the lake below.

A brook and the lake into which it empties are surrounded by a leafless forest which is the only real indication in the picture that it is January. There is no snow on the ground or ice on or around the water. The brook is running over a shallow rocky bed, creating small rapids. The sky is a pale blue, tinted gold along the horizon where the sun has just set. Banks of clouds are tinted bright orange and dark purple.

It is early evening and we are walking through the forest towards a dazzling sun shining through the trees ahead. The sun is rather low in the sky, creating long shadows and swaths of golden evening sunlight. The forest floor is a lush carpet of green ferns, with a few rocky patches, particularly around a low hill to our right. A small dead tree in the left foreground has been broken a few feet above its base, the top part laying on the ground pointing towards the sun.

Looking across a large lake below a sky filled with low gray clouds. The shorelines are covered with forests of leafless trees, mostly silhouetted in the dim evening light. The setting sun has managed to find a tiny patch of clearing right along the horizon, creating a semicircle of bright yellow light and tinting nearby clouds gold and orange. We are walking down a dirt and gravel path, a large lake to our right, a forest to our left. Both grassy shoulders of the path slope downward several feet and are overgrown with tall weeds, leafy shrubs and occasional white wildflowers. A wooden bench to our left is almost engulfed. The far shore of the lake is wooded. Although the lake is only gently rippled by a soft breeze, dark and dramatic clouds are streaming past at low levels beneath a high hazy overcast. The rays of the setting sun are breaking through in a few spots, painting some of the clouds orange and gold.

Does anyone remember this? A few of those short stories have stuck with me for over 50 years. This was self-guided reading, and you read, took a small test for comprehension, and moved up to the next level. One of my fondest memories of elementary school.

(From a blog--all about the '70's)

"It was called a Reading Laboratory Kit that a company called Science Research Associates (SRA) began in 1957 and teachers used in the classrooms as a reading comprehension tool geared towards individual students. The reading materials were color coded, and as you read, completed and successfully tested all of the lessons in one level, you got to move to the next level, which was another color. And the really cool thing was the Progress Board that was set up in the classroom. For each lesson you completed, a big gold star was put in that space and it was out there for all to see."

40 years ago today: The southern portion of the Taconic Mountain Range is basically two parallel chains separated by a high central valley. The Appalachian Trail follows the eastern fork. In Connecticut, this consists of a high, wooded plateau called Mount Riga, with the rocky crag of Lions Head rising from its southernmost tip.

We are standing atop cliffs of reddish gray rock looking down into a sun-drenched valley hundreds of feet below. The valley floor is relatively flat, although wooded hills bisect it to our right and others rise in the distance along the entire horizon. Most of the valley floor is wooded, too, but there are several green fields, some houses and a small pond visible. The sky is bright and clear, but rather whitewashed along the horizon, which is the only portion of the sky visible in the photo.

40 years ago today: The open, grassy crest of Cobble Mountain looked just as lovely today as the image which had lingered in my memory. Encircling the summit was a sprawling, rocky meadow with extensive views to the north and west. The mountain overlooked a lush, green valley filled with forests and pastures in the foothills of eastern New York State.

On a rainy, overcast day with low clouds and wisps of valley fog we are standing atop a mountain looking down across wooded foothills to an agricultural valley with large green fields and pastures, swathes of forest and small clusters of buildings. A beautiful morning with a deep blue October sky mirrored on the waters below. We are following a dirt and gravel footpath to a wooden footbridge across the mouth of a small cove on a large lake. A cluster of aquatic plants along both sides of the bridge have turned bright oranges and golds, as have most of the trees surrounding the lake. A grove of stately pines just across the bridge add deep green tones.
