"Global average temperatures reached new highs over the past 10-12 months, notching new records in the steady march of a warming climate, two national groups announced last week.
"It's been warmer than at any time in recorded history and was likely warmer than any other time in 125,000 years, an analysis by #ClimateCentral concluded. The #Copernicus Climate Change said it's also 'virtually certain' that 2023 will be the hottest year in recorded history.
"If these and other announcements detailed below sound familiar, it’s because heat-related records are being set and broken, over and over again, month after month and year after year in cities, states and countries around the world.
"None of this should be surprising, said Andrew Pershing, vice president for science at Climate Central, a nonprofit that reports climate change news. 'We should expect to set records because we live on a warming planet. We have too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.'
"Heat – and cold – records have been set since people first started keeping track of temperatures, but today warm records occur far more often than cold records, and in dizzying variety. Individually they're not always attention-grabbing, but considered en masse, they present a piercing look at how steadily rising temperatures affect how we live, work and play.
"All of the warming is 'in line with earlier predictions,' says #MichaelMann, author of the new book '#OurFragileMoment' and a professor of Earth and environmental science at the University of Pennsylvania. 'Some of the impacts however, such as #ExtremeWeather events, are exceeding the predictions."

"This October was the hottest on record globally, 1.7 degrees Celsius (3.1 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the pre-industrial average for the month — and the fifth straight month with such a mark in what will now almost certainly be the warmest year ever recorded.
"October was a whopping 0.4 degrees Celsius (0.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the previous record for the month in 2019, surprising even Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European climate agency that routinely publishes monthly bulletins observing global surface air and sea temperatures, among other data.
"'The amount that we’re smashing records by is shocking,' Burgess said.
"After the cumulative warming of these past several months, it’s virtually guaranteed that 2023 will be the hottest year on record, according to #Copernicus.
"Scientists monitor climate variables to gain an understanding of how our planet is evolving as a result of human-generated #GreenhouseGas emissions. A warmer planet means more extreme and intense weather events like severe drought or hurricanes that hold more water, said Peter Schlosser, vice president and vice provost of the Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University. He is not involved with Copernicus."

With an average temperature of 15.3°C, October 2023 globally was the warmest October in the #Copernicus dataset. The global temperature anomaly (1.7°C over the 1850-1900 pre-industrial reference period) was the 2nd highest for any month in the ERA5 dataset, second only to September 2023.
For the year-to-date (Jan-Oct), 2023 globally so far was record warm, 1.43°C above the 1850-1900 average. The average sea surface temperature over the latitude belt 60°S–60°N was 20.79°C, record warm as well.

Britain will rejoin two of the EU’s science funding projects in a major post-Brexit shift.
The UK government announced Thursday that it will associate to both Horizon Europe, the bloc’s multibillion-euro research funding scheme, and Copernicus, its earth observation program, under a “bespoke new agreement unlocking unparalleled research opportunities, and also the right deal for British taxpayers.”
