I'm currently sitting in jury duty in a densely populated city. Of the 250+ people they crammed in here, I'm one of approximately twenty wearing a mask. Not that it's especially shocking to me, just incredibly sad. What's that saying about smart phones and stupid people?

It is unfailingly depressing that the majority of #COVID illnesses and deaths are so ridiculously easily avoidable. Vaccines aside, simply wearing a mask and avoiding gatherings could essentially wipe out the virus. But the "I need to see faces" and "I miss the office" folks won't have it.

Folks will be like "I could easily walk faster than these shuffling zombies but I miss the touch of people" and intentionally walk straight into their clutching grasp. Humanity is doomed.

@AntiAutocrats @gwensnyder

I remind these people that #COVID is a crapshoot. It won't affect about half the people at all, though they'll still spread it. In my county, the ICU is still about 90% COVID patients--about 75% of them not vaccinated--and each week about 6 people (~0.3 per 100k) die from it. About 86% lose their sense of smell and taste, and 5% don't get it back; though we still don't know all the permanent damage that COVID will do, I've read about links to diabetes, and amputation necessitated by COVID via that path.

If she wants to be stupid about it and treat COVID like a cold, that's her choice.

But there's a good chance she'll spread it to others before she learns her lesson, and that's not fair. Because of her and people like her, I continue to stay distanced and wear masks around strangers.

So I went to King County's Public Health site to check on the state of the measles potential outbreak (the secondary infection window ends tomorrow), and found two things:

1. There's no news on the measles situation.

2. They posted an interview with Dr. Eric Chow, Chief of Communicable Disease Epidemiology for Public Health—Seattle & King County, from this month. Have some quotes:

-"It’s a multilayered approach [to covid]—stay up to date on vaccines, mask up in indoor spaces, particularly when they’re not in well-ventilated or crowded spaces," he said."

-"While there is no official mandate to wear masks anymore, Chow chooses to wear one in order to protect his family and friends, including his eight-month-old and older parents."

Here's the article: https://nwasianweekly.com/2023/06/king-countys-chief-of-communicable-disease-dont-let-your-guard-down-with-covid-19/

If our chief of communicable disease epidemiology is still masking and saying to mask, I'd really like to know why that's not county standard?

Per WHO, every twelve minutes four people die of acute covid. Three of those deaths are in the United States.

Entering April, for every three covid deaths, U.S. saw another excess death not attributed to covid.

The emergency is over. Covid is not done with us.

#ThisIsOurPolio #LongCovidKills #LongCovid #Covid #Covid19 #SARS2 #DeathCult #LifeExpectancy #CovidIsNotOver #CovidIsAirborne #WearAMask #BetterMasks

Chart: U.S. Share of 28-Day Covid Deaths
Data: JHU before 2/28/23; WHO to 5/14/23 (via Our World in Data); NCHS (via CDC) for U.S. thereafter

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Shows covid 28-day mortality as reported for the U.S. as share of G8, G20, and global 28-day mortality. Share of population for each comparison is provided for reference.

7-day avg of U.S. share of G8 covid deaths at 55.4%, on an upward trajectory, well exceeding share of pop. (~38%). This time last year, share of G8 covid deaths was 38.4%, climbing toward winter.

Avg. U.S. share of G20 covid deaths flatter: now 30.0% (vs. ~7% of G20 population). This time last year: 21.1%.

U.S. share of global parallels: now 30.5% (vs. ~4% of pop.). This time last year, U.S. share of global covid deaths was 21.1%.

All three metrics were near or below respective populations roughly May through August of two years ago; thereafter have been profoundly higher than population share ever since.

Caption:

United States represents about a third of G8 population, yet well over half of all recent reported G8 covid deaths.

Likewise, U.S. share of G20 deaths is now near four-and-a-third times its share of population; share of global deaths: over seven times population share.
Chart: Rolling Year Pandemic Mortality: United States
Data: CDC, NCHS

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Captions:

Rolling Year shows deaths reported latest 365 days.

As of May 11, CDC ended reporting of PHE aggregate covid deaths. CDC now provides provisional covid death counts from NCHS NVSS. This chart uses aggregate data through May 6, provisional data thereafter.

---

As of April 1, over one in four excess deaths in the U.S. were “not covid”. Incomplete preliminary data has this ratio approaching three in ten entering May.

That includes: covid deaths not reported as such or for which no covid test was administered; deaths from post-acute sequelae of prior covid infection (whether consequences of symptomatic Long Covid or otherwise asymptomatic, heightened risk for sudden adverse health outcomes); and deaths from causes that would otherwise had not been fatal but for deferred medical care, continued strain on understaffed hospitals, and shortages of vital medical supplies.

Close reading of a single paragraph by GBDer Richard M. Salsman, via Naked Capitalism.

"I can’t stop thinking about a recent analysis that found over 300,000 Americans might be alive today had all adults been vaccinated. Even though I predicted “a deluge of misinformation about the Covid vaccines”, I never thought things would be this bad.

How did we get here?"

Outside an aged care home today another visitor asked me to show them how to take a rapid covid test. There was much hrrumphing and sighing. Finally done, I told them they had to wait 15 minutes before they could enter the home where all the frail and vulnerable people live.

They waited 2 minutes, once I looked away they were on the intercom saying they’d completed their test.

The only people pretending to be surprised by this are government health officials.

"Once US schools reopened in fall 2020, children contributed more to inferred within-household transmission when they were in school, and less during summer and winter breaks, a pattern consistent for 2 consecutive school years."

#KittenWatches Help (2021)

Help is set in a care home during the first months of the pandemic, in MY city! It capably & heartbreakingly highlights the true damage of ableist #covid policy & omg, it hit my trauma as a care reciever/high risk person painfully, but cathartically!

My review took a very long time to write & was a work of both love & trauma.

Movie poster for Help shows a yellow background with a carer on the top (Jodie Comer) with her mask pulled down under her chin (Her face shows a picture of absolute horror and trauma) and a man underneath. (Stephen Graham)

Since my mother passed two years ago due to #Covid I have been very depressed and have experienced little happiness and joy outside of my daughters. Working on this project has given much such focus and happiness. My mom was a helper by nature, I share her spirit. Working on #Memory and truly building it from the ground up with the users in mind is my small part in helping out the #Fediverse

A large majority of #covid cases in households started with an infected child, according to a new study.

"More than 70% of household transmissions in households with adults and children were from a pediatric index case… Once US schools reopened in fall 2020, children contributed more to inferred within-household transmission when they were in school, and less during summer and winter breaks, a pattern consistent for 2 consecutive school years."

For pride and all the events coming up, I need to ask you all to please mask up, ideally with N95s or better. Because right now you’re putting yourself at risk each time you go out unmasked.

If you’re thinking “it’s not that bad,” here’s the US wastewater data: https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#wastewater-surveillance If you change the map’s metric to ‘Percent of wastewater samples with detectable virus,’ most are at 80-100% of samples containing covid particulates.

And here's Canada: https://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/wastewater/

You mask inside but not in restaurants? Restaurants were one of the biggest early high risk spaces and stay risky: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7323555/

The CDC said it was safe? The CDC quietly updated their own guidelines:
-https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/communication/people-with-idd/help-child-stay-healthy-at-school.html

And it's not only a covid risk right now:
-https://kingcounty.gov/depts/health/news/2023/May/20-measles.aspx

This burden shouldn't be only on us, this is a public health issue. For now though we need to mask up, and push back.

On Covid, the past is being erased and the present ignored | Coronavirus | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/01/on-covid-the-past-is-being-erased-and-the-present-ignored “The past is being erased. The present is being ignored. Even though the #pandemic is still with us, all protections, surveillance and data collections have been dismantled. Those millions still at the highest risk are reporting being told to take their masks off in hospitals. The roughly quarter of a million people who died from #Covid are no longer even a number.”

New resource: https://whn.global/paths-to-healthy-learning/ gives info that can be done at each level: teacher/classroom, principal/school, individual/household, and social/community. Includes teachers checklists, HEPA purifier calculators, email templates, links to using 504, homeschool and virtual school resources, virtual socials and field trips. Great overall guide to making next year a healthy school year, and the time to plan is now. #covid #Schools #CleanTheAir #MaskUp #CovidIsntOver #LongCovidKids

Massachusetts COVID-19 risk level maps update!

The case level map has stalled, with a few yellow/red communities.

However, the % positive map tells the underlying story - % positive levels are jumping up.

Meanwhile, Boston-area wastewater data through 5/30 shows a slight upturn in viral levels.

I'm just remembering how I felt when I heard we had a vaccine. AND the relief I felt when my friends & family got vaccinated. #COVID wasn't a death sentence anymore!

#Science did that. We also had enough people with the will & resources to get it out to the people.
#SciFi can show us a world where we succeeded. Where we didn't kill ourselves.
Where we defeated Fascists & made a better world.

I just found out the commercial air filters my public library bought cost $2000 and don’t work as well as a $100 #CorsiRosenthalBox. I mean still better than no filter but 😭😭😭

We gotta get this knowledge into our communities! So in case helpful to US folks, some links:

These filters test really well and are a good deal:

It isn't surprising that we are seeing an uptick of COVID cases at the start of summer of 2023. We've seen a similar pattern ever since Omicron appeared, where there's been a high level of #COVID spread throughout the whole year apart from a couple of months in spring.

New York Times calendar showing average cases per capita of COVID in NYC for 2022. The calendar shows that COVID levels were high almost every month apart from Feb and Mar 2022.

With COVID transmission data removed from the CDC website after the end of the public health emergency, wastewater is now our best indicator of surges.

And wastewater data shows that all of NYC has high #COVID levels.
