World Health Organization (WHO): Keeping safe from COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) this autumn and winter. Protecting lives. Strengthening health systems.
Counties by adult hospital capacity (darkest counties on map above):
⒈ Berkeley, SC ≥150%
⒉ Seminole, GA ≥150%
⒊ Barton, KS ≥150%
⒋ Chatham, GA ≥150%
⒌ Charleston, SC ≥150%
⒍ Marshall, KY—136%
⒎ Smyth, VA—116%
⒏ Buchanan, MO—110%
⒐ Wise, VA—108%
⒑ Yuma, AZ—108%
Some 42 (-4) counties ≥ 100% capacity per HHS data.
Reporting ≥ 90%: 192 (+2)—near 8% of those with any capacity. This includes surge and overflow beds: near full can mean E/Rs with day-long wait times.
For counties w/ ICUs—near one in six are full or near full.
She’s paid to deny masks are useful while peddling her hand washing book. She’s paid to hide hospital outbreaks and rising death rates while minimizing #covid transmission in #bced schools and hospitals. She’s paid to publicly claim victory over a virus she’s silently embraced in pursuit of private health.
Their briefings only serve to trigger the ongoing sadness and despair I feel for a govt I helped vote to power, who gave up on control of transmission and instead focused on restricting covid information and minimizing societal sickness and death they caused by giving up.
#BonnieHenry will forever remind me of my loss of trust in public health. Whenever I see her I’m reminded of the daily lies, misinformation and all the disgusting praise she got for surrendering our province to #covid.
We in #BC deserve a fresh new #PHO. One that is less tired of lying or distracted by her next book. One without #GBD motives and a winery in addition to the exorbitant salary she gets pretending to be a doctor.
We in #BC deserve a true public health leader.
My podcast and YouTube channel appearances are usually about my computer technology writing.
This is an exception. Here is my C0VID survival advice. #COVIDisAirborne
I think this line bears repeating:
"There is no amount of me doing my individual best that can overcome a failure of community policy."
hat tip to @pixplz
»When it's pouring rain you use an umbrella. You don't decide based on how many people there are without umbrellas getting wet.
Why would you decide to base your health protection on people not masking, who are simply looking at other people deciding if they should mask.
From March 2022:
> Aerosol transmission was never merely a medical question.
> Accepting it, as Dr. John Conly, an infectious disease specialist advising the WHO on its Covid guidelines, told Reuters that first summer, “would affect our entire way of life.”
> Government, Chapin allowed, should still provide clean water and regulate hygiene in dairies and slaughterhouses. The most important task of the public health profession, however, was controlling outbreaks of communicable disease through laboratory work and data collection. Otherwise, responsibility for disease prevention must be left to individuals. “It was a common saying of sanitarians of years ago that for every death from typhoid fever someone ought to be hung,” whether it be “the city councilman, the health officer, or the landlord,” Chapin wrote. “It is more in accord with present day knowledge and modern conditions to say that if a man has typhoid fever it is his own just punishment for sanitary sins.”
Okay, but counterpoint: what if there is no treatment.
"A more realistic hope is that researchers can one day offer physicians a kind of “how to” manual for long Covid with a battery of tests to pinpoint what’s gone wrong and, ideally, treatments."
If I have to hear in every article about how a treatment is coming, while nobody talks about prevention, then as a matter of policy I will remind that we may not ever have a treatment.
Immer, wenn ich mein CO2-Messgerät laufen lasse, bin ich erstaunt, wie oft der Alarm (ab 1000 ppm) ausgelöst wird, auch wenn ich allein im Büro oder im Home Office sitze. Ich lüfte also etwa stündlich.
Alle anderen im Büro? Fehlanzeige. Damit in gar keinem Zusammenhang stehend, sind viele immer wieder ein paar Tage lang krank.

Some 233 (+5) counties have pediatric care near or over capacity (≥ 90%).
Of 269 (+1) counties reporting any PICU capacity, over one in five are near or over full.
So many places where there ain't enough staff for sick or injured kids to receive required care.
Great wrap-up of the current state of all things COVID-related (vaccines, variants, wastewater levels, masks, masking in healthcare, etc.), from the People’s CDC.
Another good one:
Please consider signing this petition urging CDC Director Mandy Cohen to acknowledge and advocate for a multi-layered (Swiss cheese) approach to preventing COVID. Let her know that the current “You do you” and vaccine-only approaches don’t cut it.
😷 + 💉 = 🧀
Hello, friends. Please consider signing this petition urging Congress, the White House, and HHS to provide free N95 masks by mail within the US. 😷
COVID Vaccines (gen 1), and moving forward
* No sterilizing vaccine (gen 1)
Read this whole thread: https://mastodon.social/@jmcrookston/111128536513191405
If you read one source paper referenced there, read this: https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1009509
It was always a lie. Vax or infection immunity fades fast.
'Sterilizing' immunity only found for pathogens that spread systemically via blood/lymph nodes (think rash -- measles, chickenpox, smallpox, etc)
* Asymptomatic transmission still occurs!
Even with Measles/Chickenpox etc, there's still transmission occurring with vaccination, we already know all too well, it happens with #COVID
* XBB 1.5 based shots have limited potential to protect
Immunity (short-term) is provided by antibodies, which the new shots produce way fewer of than compared to OG strain.
* Single infection likely causes immune damage/organ damage LC or not
* NPIs like respirators, distancing, air cleaning are essential

Yay, explaining to unfamiliar doc that my anxiety was entirely workable until an actual pandemic happened & then I am called for jury duty DURING SAID PANDEMIC. "Do you have a psychiatrist?" she asks. (My unspoken answer was "The right question is, 'Do we have a functional public health response to THIS ACTUAL PANDEMIC?'"). But no, it's MY INDIVIDUAL PROBLEM right? Anyway I am getting excused out of jury duty for being Very Anxious. Sigh. #CovidIsAirborne #CovidIsNotOver #Novid
Pediatric staffing never recovered to pre-omicron levels. Rather, near one in five pediatric beds reported May of 2022: now missing. (There's been a very slight recovery in recent weeks.)
PICU Capacity Level (not shown): 68%.
Weekly average ~150 PICU beds were covid patients.
We're failing our kids. The emergency is over.
Capacity Level has been elevated since independence from the virus was declared two summers ago—as fewer and fewer professionals are available to staff hospital beds.
Critical Staffing Level, already at 2021 levels, has been further elevated for months now—with over one in nine reporting hospitals at critical shortage.
How come nobody talks about getting a good night's sleep as part of a good COVID response?
Keep your immune system in tip top shape. Don't just squirt NO up your nose or pop pax.
Keeping hydrated probably quite helpful too. Keep the mucosal membranes working. Humidity etc
@MadisonMonkey Perhaps, after a repeat bad “Tripledemic” bout this fall/winter, which will have negative effects on both healthcare AND the economy, there will be more incentive for governments and businesses to pay attention to clean air.
They can’t live in denial forever. It’s just unfortunate that scientists and advocates have predicted and warned all along but governments wait to “learn the hard way” first. 🙄
Getting vaxed is an act of care for everyone around us, and should not be restricted to certain groups. Vaxing a fraction of the population makes no sense from a #PublicHealth perspective - only an electoral one.
tl;dr: Go get that vax! 💉
Not sure if this info has made the rounds here yet, so:

Preventing Aerosol-Transmissible Diseases in Healthcare Settings:
The Need for Protective Guidelines and Standards
In 2013, Dr Li re-analyzed & re-published the 10y old data on SARS 2003 at Amoy Gardens.
Dr Yuogo Li mapped the 2003 Amoy Gardens SARS outbreak showing airborne spread.
He has been a world leader in indoor air quality for disease control for decades.
To governments: how about using CO2 monitors to ensure sufficient fresh air is supplied in classrooms, to avoid another #tripledemic this fall?
Study below says an average of 700ppm is needed in classrooms to reduce infections. How many BC schools meet that target? Prove it!
Plus, no masks means air quality is more important than ever. Staff, kids & families deserve better.
An institution received P100 elastomeric respirators designed to filter out 99.97% of airborne particles.
However, many of these respirators' filter cartridges had expired in 2014.
The study aimed to test the efficiency of these expired cartridges.
Results showed that, even though they were past their expiration date, they were still as effective as new N95 masks, although slightly below the 99.97% filtration standard.
Here’s how much coronavirus people infected with COVID-19 may exhale
"Based on the new data, the team estimates that a high shedder could potentially exhale enough virus to infect someone in a closed space in about 20 seconds, making even elevator rides risky. With an average shedder, infection could take a little under 4 minutes."
This article is about Molnupiravir. But does anybody else remember when some people floated the idea that Omicron might have been accidentally "bred" by early Paxlovid trials in Southern Africa? 🔬 Real-time #Simulation
Comparing the infectious doses emitted by the wildtype and #Omicron variants. The disparities are astonishing, especially after just 90 seconds.
📊 Wildtype clocks in at 48 infectious doses an hour, while Omicron skyrockets to 2345 doses an hour!
💡 Understand what these dramatic differences mean for public health, transmission rates, and potential outbreaks.
Since 2021 I've been moderating the New York Tech Karaoke meetup. I've now drafted an infectious disease policy; here's the short version:
1 We have online meetups, and groups on Facebook and Smule
2 No in-person meetups if the NYC hospitalization rate is above 6
3 Get vaccinated
4 Test regularly
5 Do not attend in person if you test positive or have symptoms
6 Tell us if you get sick or test positive after an in-person meetup
I keep hearing people here who think they're properly cautious about COVID because they wear a mask in "busy" public places.
No! Wear a proper respirator in ALL public places. COVID travels in the air like smoke. It stays in the air after people are gone.
And wear a PROPER RESPIRATOR.
Not a baggy blue surgical.
Wear a RESPIRATOR that's well fitted to your face that's N95, KN95 or P100 rated. See the next posts for more... #CovidisAirborne

There is no treatment for children
There is no treatment for Long COVID
There is no neutralizing vaccine
I do not plan to carry on as ‘normal’

1. We should never have stopped.
2. Masking should be expanded NOW.

Please please someone come up with the solution for this scenario. I like the above for dealing with bad faith actors, which is most of the world. But there’s the occasional:
1) good faith actor,
2) whom we are attached to or love or are stuck with or multiple,
3) who thinks we are crazy,
4) but we aren’t because we’re objectively correct because facts are things,
5) but the surrounding circumstances and/or groupthink make us look aberrent,
6) and we’ve already burned our credibility by prior arguments and/or failing to empty the dishwasher last Tuesday,
7) and we don’t have the personality to give and they don’t have the personality to receive those mealy-mouthed and unrealistic psychobabble “when you say x I feel y and please help me understand z and can you tell me what you would do in my circumstance if you assumed L, M, and N” and take all history, emotions, and embarrassment out of the situation, because we are human and to some small degree adult and can’t just set all that shit aside,
8) and we need to reset back to “but look at this as if you hadn’t heard all the experts and were just building up from some 9th grade biology and physics and your memory of how you’ve seen things like smoke happen in the real world”,
9) and we don’t want to be dicks and humiliate anyone but want to give them a way to walk it back without being totally humiliated themselves,
10) and want to still live in a society,
11) and want to admit all the horrible negatives that will come with changing your mind, such as the facts that:
A) masks are somewhat uncomfortable,
B) and they’re unpleasant,
C) and they make you look like a weirdo but-jet-fuel-can’t-melt-steel! theorist,
D) and they’re ugly,
E) and they constrain your lifestyle and your social life,
F) and they’re not 100% effective,
G) and you have to be super diligent all the time about fit and use, and the slightest infraction will invalidate all your points with all your friends because they’ll be like “aha! See, you’re not perfect either with this so why would I do anything if I can’t be assured of not getting Covid!”,
H) and you can’t actually SEE any of this anyway and it gets super tiring and you will daily wonder if maybe you ARE crazy because most people seem fine and even happier not worrying about this shit,
I) and the humidity!
12) but they’re not crazy and you’re not crazy and the people who actually have the time and energy to think about these things on a policy level are just straight up fucking us over,
13) …and you just want this close person to be able to see that, in whatever way is easiest for them to do it, that gets you back on the same page about this culture-defining thing
Anyone have good ideas for the straightforward problem I’ve described above?
