I've realized recently that I like coding but I looooove photography. 😁📸 Coding is fun but it doesn't compare to photography for me. 🥰
And that wasn't the showrunner or director, that lack of freedom was all me.
My point here is... as a media composer you're often working inside a box, working on someone else's story heard with someone else's ears and that's part of the joy, the craft, and the challenge.
But we don't need to also box Ourserlves in the same way.
I'm learning to slow down, and to write what I feel.
And I'm learning to worry less.

I've thoroughly tested several AI fiction writing apps. I gave them the parameters of the guidelines for the anthologies I've published in the past couple of years. For example, "Write a Gothic story about a haunted train, with creepy atmosphere..." The results were crappy, with shallow plots and beginner-ish writing style. None would have made it past the first round. The AI output is no competition for the creative work of a skilled author.

I used to think everyone is creative in their own way.
Now, with some of the attitudes around LLMs, I can’t tell if some people are truly not creative and hate people who are, or if some people have suppressed their creative impulses too deeply to feel them, and hate people who haven’t.
If you're trying to create something original and feeling overwhelmed with the daunting task of coming up with a new thing, STOP.

The AIs, on the other hand, process pictures completely on the pixel level, with no added layers of understanding or emotion or nuance. They ingest art in a distinctly inhuman way--can you recall every pixel of the images you are referencing? Do you have any hope of replicating their details in seconds after a mere glance? No, artists do not use source images in the same way as AI, and why would we want to?

A human will view the image of another artist in a thousand different ways on any given day based on their mood, focus, beliefs, and lived human experience. They will understand parts of an image differently according to recent insights. Even the most familiar pictures, ones we have known for years, will unfold new depths as we develop our skills and acumen.

To believe that machine learning is the same as human learning assumes that consciousness, sentience, and self-awareness have nothing to do with learning. It also falsely assumes that human creativity is based on the same statistical methods that the machine models employ. Machine learning models are not subjective interpreters of image like humans are--they are probabilistic data tables and they cannot reference data with subtlety or contextual understanding.

The argument that "humans also reference/train on others' art in order to make their own, AI just does it faster and more efficiently" is not accurate, since AI is NOT processing that art and filtering it through its own subjective framework (the soul as defined above) to create a new work to express that individual's particular ideas and emotions.

More and more I see songwriting as making a painting. Not that it's "painterly" in its emotion, but rather a collection of "events" or "markers" that are deeply (sometimes methodically) contemplated. This is where it's more compositional than improvisatory. I like making the frameworks in which improvisation can happen. #creativity

I think this is a very interesting point of view. Ellen Dissanayake has approached art, not as the creation of superb works by a limited number of people, but as human behaviour.
"It might be easier to establish the viability of the idea of art as an human behavior by considering it further as a human need (or as the satisfying of a human need). As individuals, many of us know in our bones that we need art, whatever that may mean. (It is often a unformulated, subterranean feeling or conviction.) We cannot imagine life without music, or poetry, or man-made beauty in one or more of its many forms. We thirst or hunger for these, and feel deprived when they are absent".

A few weeks ago, I finished a five week bookmaking class at a local art center in my neighborhood. I have really wanted to do something with my hands and I've had such a great time making these books - it almost was like meditation. Doing it has helped me be more comfortable with learning from my mistakes. I'm so glad I did it!

I wrote about creativity and non-ordinary states of consciousness in this 1984 book with Willis Harman:
"During the phase when you’re drifting between sleep and waking, a state known as sleep onset, the creative mind is particularly fertile, the researchers showed. They also demonstrated, for the first time, that when people are prompted to dream about a particular topic during that sleep phase, they perform much more creatively when later asked to perform three creativity tasks around that topic."

Several studies, including one from Harvard & MIT, have discovered that going into a nap with a problem in #mind helps the #brain find solutions. Extending that, use of a prompting device called Dormio during hypnagogia (the transitional stage between wakefulness & #sleep) increases #creativity & may show a way to prevent nightmares (and maybe finish a long-stuck novel). I recently saw those #AI generated videos of Wes Anderson directing Star Wars, LOTR, and Harry Potter. At first, I thought it was really clever but then got repetitive. I noticed that once I realized it was AI generated, my enjoyment of them went down significantly.

I've been getting fed up taking photos in my neighbourhood lately – endless grey days; I've seen everything and been everywhere. But I tried an interesting exercise which helped a bit.
1. I sat down last night and looked at some photo books. I wrote a list of the type of pictures I liked, and their subjects. For example, 'a dead end'; 'a staircase'; 'a junk shop window'.

Generative #AI is changing the way we complete tasks. While it is helpful for tasks like planning a trip or meal, it cannot replace the #creativity of humans. Its best use is for simplifying obnoxious tasks. It can support writers and other professionals whose fields cannot be replaced by AI. Yet, we should keep an eye on the revenue models of these tools and put restrictions on their monetization to ensure they are used responsibly.
