I had a terrific interview with The Thinking #atheist (Seth Andrews) today for the Divorcing Religion #podcast. I will be sure to let you know when it drops. Every interaction I have had with him has been positive. I sure do appreciate those who have managed to divorce religion and embrace #reality. It can feel isolating and scary at first, but intensely liberating as we begin to use #criticalthinking and build our safe, #secular support networks.

I've been removed from my family for so long that it's shocking to go back and find myself drowning in their 'woo' language of science denialism, religion, and conspiracies. It struck me that so much of everything they say is just constructed purely out of anecdotes and story telling, without any concern for authenticity or validity of their statements. To them all of those are treated as 'facts', but actual facts and especially inconvenient facts or objective facts are rendered down to mere 'opinions' to satisfy momentary confirmation biases.
This was brought on by a crisis where a family member is forgoing medical science for what is essentially quackery and grifting, to their own detriment. This inevitably results in what could have been a lethal outcome or severe physical/cognitive impairment. That was only barely avoided by the intervention of my sister who has medical training. Yet, after all of this, the family member still lies to my sister and I as well as lies to the Doctors. While all this lying is happening, they're communicating in secret to a quack Chiropractor.
America doesn't necessarily have a #gun problem. It has a #guncontrol problem, a #logic problem, a #criticalthinking problem, and a #compassion for "the other" problem.
#USA has gun ownership to gun death rate higher than other Western countries. 3.5X higher gun ownership rate than Canada & Iceland but 4X & 11X the death rate. The difference is how the public perceives why you need a gun.
In the US, too many people think guns are about protecting what's yours instead of a LAST RESORT.

yes I understand stating false things as truth (sometimes, not most times) is concerning. It may very well teach us as a people to be smarter about how we process media and information. We already have plenty of politicians spewing “alternative facts” ( aka LIES) confidently. Maybe the public will learn from this that anybody can lie to your face confidently. It’s up to us to verify and use critical thought.
Missouri House bill does a couple of things. The humorous one is actually the scariest - limits nonexistent vaccine microchips. The language also applies to pace makers and other mechanical or electronic devices under under the skin. #StupidPolitics #CriticalThinking #WhoVotedThemIn

In public discourse, research and academic writing, logical fallacies should always be avoided because they invalidate conclusions and arguments. https://research.com/research/logical-fallacies-examples #CriticalThinking
If you're giving a course, the other issue I think ties in that I left out of my previous reply is hypocrisy.
We live in an overconstrained world, which means inconsistencies abound, and classical logic does not apply because it likes to disprove things by observing they lead to inconsistencies and it's hard to distinguish inconsistencies that arise from the premises and inconsistencies that arise from the thing to be (dis)proven. We are easily tricked.
Nature is not inconsistent because it does not exist on abstractions, but we are born into a world that is just a mass of signals that we must first parse into language and a habitable community, and within our lifetime grow to understand and navigate vast complexities from genetics to the far reaches of the universe, with vagueries like psychology, sociology, economics and other social arts thrown in just to keep us off balance.
It's stunning we can do much of any of this in so short a time, frankly, so we owe ourselves a collective pat on the back before we stress overly, but we also need for our own survival not be tricked by forces that would turn us back from civilization.
And the tool that is often used in social settings it so show someone is a hypocrite, as if that was disqualifying. It is not. The willingness to engage inconsistency is table stakes for living in the world. A philosophy of inconsistency is essential.
I'm a big fan of Aristotle's virtue ethics, but only really in through the lens of something I call creative misunderstanding. I like his ideas, but I also find them unworkable. I'll focus particularly on what I have had summed up for me as "virtue is the golden mean between unreasonable extremes". I take his point to be that there is some ideal you can locate by clever triangulation between, say, spendthriftiness and miserliness. But that's where I part with him.
I see the "middle" in the way mathematicians see the mid-point between zero and one. Yes, there's a place we call 0.5 that we can argue is the middle, but there is another place you can argue is the middle which is the place where there are the same number of points on either side. But points are infinitely small, and there is a countable infinity to the right and left of every point between zero and one, so any point can be argued to be the midpoint, and sometimes the midpoint needs to be seen as thus movable.
I refer to it not as the "golden mean" but the "messy middle" because depending on context, it must move. It isn't a place, it is a quest. Every added nuance takes you not closer but instead to a place that requires more study because there is fractally a recurring enemy of dogma that is fighting to keep real justice of definition from being achieved. So what makes one "right" is not that they say things the right way, but that they are willing to defend the position they take, and to change that position dynamically and without shame when shown that circumstances require it.
What's vexing about the messy middle is that it's hard to distinguish weasely people from heroic people. Both require shifting. But the ability to distinguish weasels from heroes is not something the Universe offers us as a guarantee. So you have to defend your right to be called hero. It is not, in the Aristotilian way we're taught, waiting to be uncovered, but more just a messy space that we must accept as messy and learn to live with by seeking always an increase in justice.
And what is justice? Yeah, I fear that's gonna have to be staked out in similar way. Messy. But I'm not sure we are offered better. So I'll stand by that.
Alas, many philosophical problems are intimately tied up in tribal politics.
I don't find it hard to accept ideas from unpleasant sources. I'm a political independent with progressive leanings who used to (decades ago) listen to Limbaugh and the whole evening of Fox News not because I liked what I heard but because it seemed more interesting to understand why people disagreed with me than to hear repeatedly that people agree. I eventually stopped because they became repetitive and really not informative, not because I wanted to stop the flow of other ideas.
Suffice to say, I am not bothered about taking ideas from unusual places. It's source of useful power. And I"m not bothered offering uncomfortable ideas to people. I'm used to people being annoyed at that. I wish it made me more popular, but I'm resigned to the idea that truth-telling is not socially favored.
And yet, I do find that each conversation takes place in multiple spaces. Discussion of an issue becomes, by proxy, discussion of an ideology, such that it's hard lately to take a position that's unpopular, and NOT because I feel judged by my peers (whatever they are). I'm not worried about so-called wokeness holding me back, for example. But I think what passes for a political right is no longer a principled conservative movement, no longer the other side of a legitimate debate. And I need to offer it no fuel.
Instead, it is a hermit crab that has invaded the shell of a past party and is abusing what trust there ever was in that party, to destroy any notion of democracy, of free public exchange, of societal consensus-making, etc. It offers authoritarian wolvery in conservatively tailored sheep's clothing.
I wish the issue of political alignment could be factored out from other matters, but in some sense I think the idea of being able to pretend it is something you can talk about in the abstract is a luxury borne of a healthy free society. And right now society has a disease it needs to shake off.
One casualty that already upsets me is the inability to use metaphor without qualifying it. I have an essay I wrote a while back that I'd love to publish. But it ends in a suggestion that something be burned to the ground and started anew. It was just metaphorical. In healthy times there would be no question. But I actively fear that someone these days would take it literally. The idea that I should have to rewrite the ending pains me. So it sits languishing.
These are precarious times. And the chains it imposes on ordinary discourse are heavy, and impede the having of purely abstract discussions.

What is Critical Thinking?
📚 "Critical thinking is a kind of thinking in which you question, analyse, interpret, evaluate and make a judgement about what you read, hear, say, or write.
"To become a better critical thinker, you therefore need to learn how to:
[1] Clarify your thinking purpose and context;
[2] Question your sources of information;
[3] Identify arguments;
[4] Analyse sources and arguments;
[5] Evaluate the arguments of others; and
[6] Create or Synthesise your own arguments."

Yes I agree. This gets right into the Lippmann Dewey debates territory. Yes the populace (us!) should be "open-minded" and "correct our use" but then most people don't
Unfortunately pragmatics is used by certain actors to 'frame' definitions. (Stanley) But it takes serious money and control of media (See Ellul, Arendt, Chomsky) to do effective propaganda, which none of us are immune to (Although critical thinking helps).
I've known for a while that posting an #introduction is the done thing.. it's just that I'm too much of an #introvert for that ever to seem like a good idea. Nevertheless I'll try to be a good citizen:

Studying #philosophy, as I was fortunate to do, shows how every philosophical system, no matter how clever, has some flaws. Kurt Gödel showed that even mathematics contains at least one self-referential unprovable theorem (Epimemides' paradox). Science works by constantly improving its theories. Dogmatism and hero worship are surrendering to intellectual authoritarianism.
@analogfusion His History of Philosophy is quite good.
His advice to future generations (It's online) is very good advice. I don't hero worship people but he agrees with me. 🙂 Never hero worship anyone to the point you accept everything they say as fact. as We are all human and make mistakes. Think for yourself.
The web is an informational paradise and a hellscape at the same time. But there are concrete ways in which we can protect ourselves from information overload.

There Is No Thinking without Memorizing
An education that encourages sympathy for the past, holding the possibility that it might have something to teach us, allows us to escape the echo chamber of our time and gain perspective, which is the seed of wisdom. #education #CriticalThinking #BloomsTaxonomy #history
If your "Let science lead me" leads you to being a bigot then you are not doing science you are doing bigotry.
“If those in power want to maintain their power, they'll want to control what children learn. They'll want teachers to teach what is in their interests. They'll want to prevent children from learning things that might undermine their power. They'll tell you it is about not wanting children to feel bad about themselves, but this is a smokescreen. They seek to preserve their power.”

Critical Thinking Isn't Enough. Time for Critical Ignoring. | FlaglerLive
Critical ignoring is the ability to choose what to ignore and where to invest one’s limited attentional capacities. Critical ignoring is more than just not paying attention – it’s about practising mindful and healthy habits in the face of information overabundance.
@black_intellect Woah there. Analyze the article. Their candidacy almost guarantees neither Sinema nor Gallego can avoid splitting the Democratic vote, leading to a Republican win.
