Esp because when the toot talks about bot-fueled disinformation. #CriticalThinking
Of course inequality and the absolute denigration of the other is the point for Netanyahu and co. Or if not the point, at least a bonus.
If Hamas was hiding a control base under an Israeli hospital and it was Israeli civilians at risk, would Israel think that attacking the hospital would be justified? If the answer is “no,” then the attack against Shifa hospital is also not justified.
Everyone knows I have #ADHD, right? And that I am a Critical Thinker? I like to try new things:

Seems I've been practising critical ignoring instinctively for a while now 🤔😎
“Critical ignoring is the ability to choose what to ignore and where to invest one’s limited attentional capacities. Critical ignoring is more than just not paying attention – it’s about practising mindful and healthy habits in the face of information overabundance.”
Four beginner-level tips for spotting misinformation on the internet.
The article goes into more depth on each topic listed below.
- Know Your Sources
- Check the Context
- Spot the Patterns
- Do Your Research
Printed information in brick and mortar #libraries is more carefully vetted than what is found on the #internet. And, anyway, persons without the #CriticalThinking skills for separating wheat from the chaff probably do not spend a lot of time in libraries. But many persons with poor critical thinking skills do spend a lot of time on the internet where #misinformation is abundantly available. That may not be a good thing for society.
Truth, value, & justice are a partisan game for money & power in which you are just a pawn interacting with other pawns. Anyone who knows it & keeps it up is just wearing a big "I'm Bad" badge.
What is the issue & why does it supercede other issues? #criticalthinking
The rational mind produces an understanding of nature through evidence-based knowledge which leads to a science of interconnectedness, peace and love.
The irrational #Republican mind conjures up gods and religion out of fear and ignorance which leads to division, hatred and war.
“What’s not going to change in the next 10 years?” is an important question few people ask themselves or anyone else.

#ICYMI Been thinking about this short documentary lately.
A helpful reminder to take a step back, from time to time, and examine *why* the news and the messaging you're receiving exists. Are you being herded? Manipulated? Persuaded? Is there something about the story that's trying to undermine or bypass your critical thinking or install a bias?
Practice healthy skepticism, and afford yourself the grace of changing your mind when something doesn't add up.

They look at the students’ social interactions, how eloquently they express their opinions & ideas, how deep their #understanding of a subject is, .. & their #criticalthinking. Marks r not a ticket to success. #Attitude, diligence, resilience & understanding r equally important. So to students everywhere, marks do not define you"
There is a lot of talk about addressing today's ecological issues in a way that achieves "justice."
But unless we start with the reality that we 1) live on a finite planet that is 2) in ecological overshoot as well as 3) incredibly inequitable, we won't have the right foundation for exploring what "justice" in the Anthropocene might entail.
In the simple, yet profound declaration ‘I think, therefore I am’, René Descartes captured a fundamental truth about human existence and consciousness.
It challenges us to be mindful of our thoughts, for in them lies the essence of our existence. ‘I think, therefore I am’ is not just a statement about being, it’s a call to conscious living and thinking.
There is major movement-building potential in traits that serve us in our personal lives and in our collective efforts to shape our societies.
Social movements that help their participants cultivate these traits harness a deep source of power.
I think we have yet to really tap into it.
Valuable perspective on the need to develop student #criticalthinking, especially new contexts, for example #AI and #ChatGPT . You really can't just "cancel," but help students confront. Congress could investigate via academics whose disciplines require skill in content generation. (Long ago, I offered a lesson on why the National Enquirer was not a source for academic papers!) Book writing update 1: Why we must develop our "critical thinking identity" to lay the groundwork for sustainable and democratic societies:
"We must come to see the active pursuit of knowledge about ourselves and about the world as key to who we are, so that both can be transformed."
"The rarity implied by a low p-value may tempt you to infer too much, especially when the p-value is less than a conventional threshold like 5% (a.k.a., p = 0.05). However, a 5% probability outcome is not as rare as you might think: the probability of a fair coin landing heads in at least 59 out of 100 coin flips is just 4%."
That's one of my 2023 updates to my post that attempts to help people understand p-values: https://byrdnick.com/archives/15276/the-meaning-of-statistical-significance-and-of-p-values
Letzte Woche habe ich meiner Tochter erklärt dass ich alle Informationen ausblende, die
-"Ärzte Fassungslos" oder
-"was Anwälte unbedingt geheim halten wollen" enthalten.
Gestern ging eine Tasse zu Bruch. Meine Tochter kräht laut durch die Wohnung "Papa wäre bestimmt fassungslos und Anwälte möchten nicht dass er weiss dass wir die Tasse zerbrochen haben". 😏
So ein verdammter Dalek!
(2) It also doesn't follow from the existence of a group's average inaccuracy/bias that every individual in that group exhibited that inaccuracy/bias. Even if the vast majority of the group is accurate/unbiased, a few people being inaccurate/biased in one direction will make the group's average deviate from the accurate/unbiased group members.
My website has been up & down and under moderately heavy attack since publishing this and I really do wonder why. I just talk about #propaganda and how it leads people down #extremism and #conspiracy theory rabbit holes. I think that it's important that we talk about how we use #SocialMedia and how it can exploit our #mentalhealth. It is important to encourage #CriticalThinking and #FactChecking

Spoiler: The so-called "Stockholm Syndrome" is - drumroll, please 🥁🥁🥁 - MISOGYNIIIIIST!! 🎉 🎉 🎉
TL;DW: There doesn't actually seem to be such a thing as "Stockholm Syndrome"; the actual strategy is called appeasement & it's a very effective survival tool for hostages. The ficticious "syndrome" is basically a way of taking mostly female victims' agency away from them & patronize & infantilize them.
Developing a #CriticalThinking identity is an ongoing process, and it doesn’t make us immune to dealing with problems or making bad choices. It just gives us the best chance of avoiding the problems we can avoid, and for those we can’t, making a better decision than we would have without a critical appraisal of the situation.
A society will undermine its own longer-term prospects unless enough of its citizens possess this identity.
My favourite thing about doing speaking engagements is challenging traditional views that people haven't critically considered because they are so ingrained.
I talk, people listen because, you know, it's a presentation or panel, and they have a little think.
Afterwards they come up and instead of disagreeing because of in the moment stress, they ask me to elaborate, they ask more questions, we discuss.
And the absolute best bit is when it all clicks into place and they realise that after thinking critically about the topic that the traditional method is terrible, and what I've done is improve the industry by one person.
Slowly but surely, if I keep going, one person becomes two becomes three and give it a few years and that terrible traditional tactic will be gone.
Change is slow and hard, especially when it's trying to change an established belief, but it is possible. And it's worth it.
Because Christians are taught to expect #persecution (and essentially wear it as a badge of honor), they see it everywhere - even where it’s not. #fundamentalism #radicalism #extremism #exchristian #criticalthinking #nullifidian #SecularHumanism

Online Workshop for Teachers on ‘Media Literacy and Teaching Critical Thinking”
Thursday, 9 November 2023 (15:00-18:00, online)
The United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna, in cooperation with the Slovak NGO “Slovak Debate Association” and the Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule Wien/Krems, cordially invites you to an online workshop for teachers on ‘Media Literacy and Teaching Critical Thinking’ on Thursday, 9 November 2023, from 15:00 to 18:00 hrs.
The training course consists of three parts:
Introduction to Critical Thinking
Everyone makes mistakes in thinking and sometimes takes in information automatically without much thought. The goal of this training is to recognize cognitive biases, understand why they happen, why we need critical thinking, and what it actually means to think critically.
Media literacy training will show how the spread of misinformation works, how to distinguish reputable from non-credible media, or ways to verify news and debunk conspiracy theories and hoaxes. We will also highlight the phenomenon of opinion bubbles and echo chambers that are created in the online environment. We will show how to have a constructive and tolerant debate, both online and in person.
How to teach critical thinking
Critical thinking cannot be imparted through lecture or taught by rote memorization. On the contrary, young people need to be educated to it. In this training we will introduce the principles of leading to critical thinking and examples of good practice on how to make it happen.
The workshop will be held in English by Richard Vaško from the NGO Slovak debate association www.sda.sk
Kindly register by 7 November 2023 by sending an email to: Irene Hoeglinger-Neiva / UNIS Vienna, firstname.lastname@example.org
No dia 10 de Novembro, na Universidade de Évora, acolheremos o colóquio "Crítica da Civilização Tecnológica e Trabalho Humano", organizado por João Príncipe, José Luís Garcia e Diogo Silva da Cunha.
One key takeaway from studying how to teach #CriticalThinking: Our skill depends largely on possessing subject-specific knowledge (https://www.aft.org/ae/fall2020/willingham). For example, everyday people can only evaluate the plans of a technocratic politician if they know enough about technological feasibility.
Critical thinking is not simply about innate ability. The better you become at learning and the more effort you spend diving into a topic, the more capable you’ll be of thinking critically about it.
Thanks to @DailyNous for posting and especially to Alex for contextualizing the initial claim about argument mapping (from the pull quote):
TLDR; there are least 4 problems with the claim that "Argument mapping is about twice as effective at improving student critical thinking as other methods".
"I get annoyed when people quote me just so they can appear smart especially when it's a cherry picked quote." - Einstein
Just reminding people to both check the quote and don't just quote someone to appear smart. Hero worshipping someone is letting someone else do your thinking for you.
It's a funny photo but of course, fake and it's doing the rounds on the Fediverse.
This is one of those cases where one can still get a good chuckle out of the possibility which is often counter to critical thinking.
Anything that makes you laugh or happy can be propaganda/misinformation/disinformation too if one does not take the time to verify.
Presenting the photo as fake does not make it less funny either!
🚨 Free book alert!
It can be downloaded as one file — all 879 pages and 300MB — or chapter-by-chapter for offline reading.
You can also read it online — does anyone actually prefer that?
People are losing their perspectives and it’s demonstrating how we got to be this way.

An attempt to #introduction in addition to my homepage (in finnish):
A (re)tired academic professional interested in thinking, knowledge and understanding, and the obstacles for such at any level. Epistemic security, for instance, is a serious concern for me, https://www.turing.ac.uk/sites/default/files/2020-10/epistemic-security-report_final.pdf
My intellectual toolkit stems mostly from philosophy of science, epistemology, and teaching critical thinking at university-level. Deep learning and inquiry has been a constant lifeline for me, which a slowly progressing AD is (not so mercifully) severing. My physical toolkit stemming from a few martial arts and long hikes is eroded by other ailments.
I tend to listen carefully, think and respond slowly, forget way too easily, value silence, and have no more time for identity-politics or other ego-defensive pastimes. What I don't understand is why all the pain near and far hasn't stolen my incongruence-based sense of humour yet? 🤔

WHY FORGIVENESS IS THE F-WORD:
-Hijacked by religion
-Weaponized by abusers to enforce compliance
-Victim blaming "Why can't you just forgive?"
Instead, ACCEPT REALITY by asking:
What happened? Who did it? Is it a pattern?
Then use that knowledge to make appropriate choices - including whether to give the guilty party continued access to your life. #forgiveness #abuse #ReligiousTrauma #wisdom #reality #criticalthinking #exchristian #psychology #counselor

Difficult to teach #Misinformation effectively without this grounding.

I'm deeply interested in #SelfRegulatedLearning and #CriticalThinking so I encourage work like the article linked here. And I like that they used a performance-based assessment of CT. If it's of interest to anyone interested in literacy: I'm thinking about recording my lecture series on research methods/critical thinking and uploading them to YouTube so they're publicly available; I've never liked the idea of keeping the things I can help folks with behind a paywall, especially since these topics are fundamental to working with complex information.
