#Vancouver #PoliceBoard closed a #complaint about #MediaAccess during removal of an #EastHastings Street #HomelessCamp on April 5 after #police denied they created an “#ExclusionZone.”

The large operation, carried out by dozens of city staff & police, was a departure from the city’s treatment of previous #TentEncampments. The decision to remove all tents, mostly in 1 day, came after city spent months trying to control the sidewalk encampment on several blocks of #DTES.

#Vancouver council is set to discuss whether a solution to the city’s increasing #homelessness issue lies in easing what’s required of #developers building new #housing in the #DowntownEastside, and helping owners & operators of existing buildings with urgent repairs & renovations.

Council will vote on “exploring options to update the #DTES Area Plan, with a goal of delivering more social units,” the motion states.

This is horrific. We’ve known about each of these worsening drugs for years

These drugs are only available because of the laws meant to prevent them

They are literally legal drugs. Drugs created by laws

Every case is an indictment

North Vancouver paramedic remembered for volunteer patrols to reverse overdoses in Downtown Eastside

1200s if not 1000s of people in British Columbia are alive & well today thanks to Ryan Vena, as loved ones mourn the death of a man who took it upon himself to respond to overdoses in the Downtown Eastside years before he became a paramedic.

…So a real solution is to raid the homes of money launderers, and confiscate the properties of real estate tax dodgers

Then, within weeks, we will magically have solutions to the 4000 people living on the street for decades in #Vancouver. Bet on it.

My comment amongst the chatter there:

— They raided the wrong postal code. If the city of #Vancouver wants to solve #homelessness, they need to mount police raids into neighborhoods where decisions are made that control the rents

The “#HousingCrisis“ is making a lot of people a lot of money. It is not a crisis for them, and it will continue because it is very profitable

In recent years, it’s in a sea of red ribbon skirts. 🪡🔴

I was confused because I thought this meant you had seen this “ON” Hastings Street, in #Vancouver which has for generations been the poorest urban neighborhood in Canada, two blocks from my house, where people sell stuff they pulled from bins (or sometimes perhaps other means)

The wealthiest people in Canada, 15 minutes away where the billionaires live, are bent on disappearing the impoverished, so the situation is rather desperate on Hastings now

A Better Future Is Possible for the Downtown Eastside

By Shane Simpson 17 April 2023
The former BC NDP minister who grew up in the neighbourhood offers five ideas to grow a more resilient community.

A very long read but also a convincing argument

"‘There is a public consensus that government needs to act"

foundational issues that need to be part of any discussion

* Gentrification must be paused
* Safe supply of drugs
* Secure housing
* Meaningful reconciliation

All the talk of harms and inevitable serious impacts on residents and businesses from 3,000 people forced to live without homes because of the unaffordable rents in #Vancouver neglect to mention that if everyone magically disappears after all their possessions are destroyed or (ironically) we pay to put them in jail, a vast number of those same local businesses and residents will be wiped away by #gentrification

People forget that the city of #Vancouver forced poor people to live on the #dtes by corralling them there for generations

Now developers want to make money from the properties here (I live at Main & Powell) without considering where people will go 🤷🏻‍♂️

Most folks are quick to demonize some #SexWorkers without getting to know any & understanding why some are working the streets to survive. Education, compassion & empathy go much further than quick judgements. I have several friends in sex work & don't judge them. I try to support nonprofits who help them & help raise awareness on sex worker's rights & safety issues.
