Violet Jessop survived the RMS Olympic after it crashed in 1911; and she survived the sinking of RMS Titanic a year later. During WWI, she was a nurse on the hospital ship HMHS Britannic when it hit a naval mine. She helped patients evacuate before abandoning ship herself.

Spotted in Venice: a model of a tank designed by Leonardo da Vinci in 1487. This fighting vehicle was designed to be driven straight onto a battlefield and to decimate the enemy with its 360-degree cannons. It was powered by two large cranks operated internally by four men.
Here are male and female memento mori figurines used for spiritual contemplation from the 19th century. They were meant to remind the owner of the transience of life and material luxury. They are now part of the Wellcome Collection in London.

In the 1930s, Listerine cigarettes were created. The tobacco was infused with the same antiseptic oils used in the mouthwash for a "cooling and soothing effect." Listerine cigarettes were evidently not very popular because there is almost no record of their existence.

This is a carbonized loaf of bread from Pompeii, 79 C.E. - preserved for thousands of years in the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius. The baker left his stamp, which reads: “Celer, slave of Quintus Granius Verus." Celer is known to have survived the eruption, as his name later appears on a list of "freed men." Most bread at the time was baked in community ovens, so customized stamps were used to mark individual families’ and bakeries’ loaves.

We take each pulse (and sometimes there are hundreds per second) and find the average pulse profile or the average unique fingerprint of each pulsar. And for some pulsars, we have decades of data. What we find is that they’re remarkably stable over the long term!
This NYE, starting from 7am Sydney time (so, 20:00 UTC on 30 Dec) I’ll be spending most of the day using the Parkes radio telescope to observe pulsars!

#DYK that COFFIN COLLARS like this were invented to thwart bodysnatchers in the early 19th century? The collar was fixed around the neck of a corpse and bolted to the bottom of a coffin, making it nearly impossible to remove the body from its grave. Bodysnatchers (or "Ressurectionists") stole bodies to sell to anatomists and medical schools during this period.

Did you know that for centuries, a “gossip” was a woman who attended her pregnant daughter’s, sister’s, or friend’s delivery? The word was a corruption of “god-sib” or “god-sibling,” meaning “sister in the Lord.” The gossips offered emotional and physical support to mother and midwife. It was only later that the term took on a derogatory meaning.
This remarkably detailed wax anatomical model (c.1787) is now housed at the Javier Puerta Museum.
“One Night Cough Syrup” from the 1930s, which contained cannabis, morphine, chloroform, and alcohol. In 1934, the FDA ruled that the claims of the cough syrup's therapeutic properties were misleading, and the remaining stock was destroyed.
