As a complete data nerd who is learning Français, I found this blog post from Duolingo about the name for pie chart in different languages super fun. Perhaps unsurprisingly I am a fan of Camembert: https://blog.duolingo.com/names-for-pie-charts-other-languages/ #data #DataVisualisation #DataViz
Day 13 of the #30DayMapChallenge was #Chloropleth, so in honour of last year's Red - Taylors Version map, I decided to plot global total album sales for #TaylorSwift by country. Unsurprisingly the United States had far more sales than anywhere else - more than double the total of all the other countries combined in fact!
It would be interesting to come back to this and re plot it once she has finished the #ErasTour. She is already going to all of these countries I believe, but the proximity might change some of the numbers.

Day 6 of the #30DayMapChallenge ended up taking me a couple of days due to a lot of bugs, and producing a code file too big to be committed to GitHub without being zipped first...
The theme for day 6 was #Asia, and I decided to plot the provinces of Thailand according to how much tourist revenue they pull in.
As usual you can find all my code, data and the interactive version of the map on my challenge website at the link below.

The official EU data portal has a new, pretty comprehensive #DataVisualisation Guide: https://data.europa.eu/apps/data-visualisation-guide/
Good initiative, and the content seems good at first glance (I’ve just sampled the ’Pitfalls in dataviz’ section). BUT, the irony. The color scheme chosen for the webpage is really *horrible*, early 2000’s internet style primary colors with jarring contrast… Maybe an official EU color profile that might have originally been set up for print long ago?

For those who are interested in such things, I downloaded the Ordnance Survey Zoomstack data which (I think) is under the #OpenGovernmentLicense, wrote some #python #GeoPandas to cut out 10x10km (100km²) squares centred on the railway stations at York and Sheffield, and had a play with some of the OS #QGIS style sheets from here: https://github.com/OrdnanceSurvey/OS-Open-Zoomstack-Stylesheets

“[T]he kind of informational graphs we know best today would be invented by... Scot William Playfair in 1786, just a decade after The Wealth of Nations came out. “Data visualization is everywhere today, but when Playfair first created them over 200 years ago, using shapes to represent numbers was largely sneered at,” says Adam Rutherford in the Royal Society video [link] above…”

This is a very cool visualisation of (a reasonable approximation to) the known fediverse
And potentially useful for picking an instance to call home
I'm working on some complex #datavisualisation thing at the moment, there are multiple dependent subsections on the same graph, and something started triggering a circular re-calculation
rather than going spelunking in sub-graphs and possibly drilling more holes to keep it together, I added a 10ms throttler to the axis calculation, and the problem is gone.

Hi there ! #Introduction time
I have been working as a #datajournalist / #visualjournalist for 9 years, working almost exclusively with #rstats. I am based in #Switzerland.
I work for the Swiss French speaking media #LeTemps. I also teach #datajournalism to (non-geek) journalists. Initially trained as a computational biologist, I was a working as a #quant, before switching to #media
I am well versed into the #tidyverse and #rstats, especially #ggplot2 #sf for #datavisualisation & #ddj
After successfully (I hope) moving to my own instance, here's another quick #Introduction:
I'm Daniel, a computer scientist, cheminformatician, and bioinformatician currently working at #EPFL in Switzerland. While I focus on #MachineLearning for drug discovery and development, I also dabble in #Sociology of #Science, #Astronomy, and #DataVisualisation. I also really like #SciComm.
And I really like #punk rock, #hockey, #astrophotography, and #cats.
For #Day11 of the #30DayMapChallenge the theme is "red"! 🔴I plotted London bus stops using OpenStreetMap data in #rstats
Code: https://github.com/nrennie/30DayMapChallenge/blob/main/2022/scripts/11_red.R
OK, time for a better #introduction.
I am an academic at #Nottigham university (sociology and social policy).
I work on #migration, #inequality, #education, and social #policy.
I am interested in #methods, social networks (#SNA), #datavisualisation and #maps.
I am editor of Social Policy and Society (links in my profile).
I am #NewToMastodon and still on the other thing. #AcademicMastodon
