Day 13 of the #30DayMapChallenge was #Chloropleth, so in honour of last year's Red - Taylors Version map, I decided to plot global total album sales for #TaylorSwift by country. Unsurprisingly the United States had far more sales than anywhere else - more than double the total of all the other countries combined in fact!

It would be interesting to come back to this and re plot it once she has finished the #ErasTour. She is already going to all of these countries I believe, but the proximity might change some of the numbers.

Day 6 of the #30DayMapChallenge ended up taking me a couple of days due to a lot of bugs, and producing a code file too big to be committed to GitHub without being zipped first...

The theme for day 6 was #Asia, and I decided to plot the provinces of Thailand according to how much tourist revenue they pull in.

As usual you can find all my code, data and the interactive version of the map on my challenge website at the link below.
https://vikkiwalls.github.io/30-Day-Map-Challenge-2023-Live/Day%206.html

The official EU data portal has a new, pretty comprehensive #DataVisualisation Guide: https://data.europa.eu/apps/data-visualisation-guide/
Good initiative, and the content seems good at first glance (I’ve just sampled the ’Pitfalls in dataviz’ section). BUT, the irony. The color scheme chosen for the webpage is really *horrible*, early 2000’s internet style primary colors with jarring contrast… Maybe an official EU color profile that might have originally been set up for print long ago?

For those who are interested in such things, I downloaded the Ordnance Survey Zoomstack data which (I think) is under the #OpenGovernmentLicense, wrote some #python #GeoPandas to cut out 10x10km (100km²) squares centred on the railway stations at York and Sheffield, and had a play with some of the OS #QGIS style sheets from here: https://github.com/OrdnanceSurvey/OS-Open-Zoomstack-Stylesheets

Am working on this autumn's OsloMet design exam. Also refining my procrastinating technique. This post probably falls into the "procrastination" category, but anyway, here's a shelfie of my inspiration stack of data vis and graphic design books. 📚

A square closeup photo of a stack of books in a bookshelf. The titles are (from bottom to top)
"The history of graphic design" volumes 1 and 2 by Jens Müller
& Julius Wiedemann (Ed.); "Type. A visual history of typefaces and graphic styles 1628–1938" by
Cees W. de Jong, Alston W. Purvis Jan Tholenar (Ed.); "Data sketches" by Bremer & Wu; "In progress" by Jessica Hische; "Info we trust" by RJ Andrews; "The golden secrets of lettering" by Martina Flor, "Affinity Designer workbook"; "Observe, collect, draw! A visual journal" byt Lupi and Posavec.

#Map #HistoricMap #DataVis #DataViz #DataVisualization #DataVisualisation

Portrait mode hand-drawn historical map of London. The streets are coloured in different colours, mostly red, pink, blue, and yellow. The header reads "Map descriptive of London poverty, 1898-9 (in 12 sheets)" in uppercase serif letters.

Below the map is a legend explaining the colours. I replaced the colour samples in the legend with corresponding colour names.
The legend reads:
"The streets are coloured according to the general condition of the inhabitants, as under:
Black: Lowest class. Vicious, semi-criminal.
Dark blue: Very poor, casual. Chronic want.
Light blue: Poor. 18s. to 21s. a week for a moderate family.
Purple: Mixed. Some comfortable others poor.
Fairly comfortable. Good ordinary earnings.
Red: Pink Middle class. Well-to-do.
Yellow: Upper-middle and upper classes. Wealthy.
A combination of colours—as dark blur and black, or pink and red—indicates that the street contains a fair proportion of each of the classes represented by the respective colours."

I'm working on some complex #datavisualisation thing at the moment, there are multiple dependent subsections on the same graph, and something started triggering a circular re-calculation

rather than going spelunking in sub-graphs and possibly drilling more holes to keep it together, I added a 10ms throttler to the axis calculation, and the problem is gone.

made the whole thing rendering a bit faster too

A grid showing the United States titled Religious Radio in the USA. Each grid element contains a pie chart where the main colour of the pie chart and the size of the black segment represent the proportion of radio stations in the United States whose format description contains the word religion or religious. Montana and New Jersey are significantly darker than other states (representing higher proportions).

There are more #dataVisualization posts here compared to #dataVisualisation posts.
Brings to mind how many spelling “mistakes” I make in CSS versus RStats with colour / color.

visualisation of the interpolation to be done in the animation shader i'm building: depending on the speed and the orientation of the motion compared to the forward vector of the avatar, different animations must be interpolated. The color represent ID's.
Maybe it's not super clear without motion...

New version 0.9 of #ggrepel released. I'm impressed by how much this package can do for neat labelling of #RStats plots: https://ggrepel.slowkow.com/articles/examples.html
