Dead acacia trees at Dead Vlei salt pan amongst the sand dunes in Sossusvlei, southern Namibia. Some 900 years ago the climate dried up and dunes cut off Dead Vlei from the river. It became to dry in DeadVlei for the trees to even decompose. They simply scorched black in the sun, monuments to their own destruction. The trees are now nearly 1000 years old and standing in this hot desert.

Walking across Deadvlei, Sossusvlei Namibia. We just descended Big Daddy, the highest dune in the area at 325 meters. Climbing Big Daddy was quite difficult but our #Wilderness guide Marcus from Little Kulala camp was very encouraging and we made it. November 2021 Photo by @Nancy
