Some recent recommendation of some #PC #games by rather independent #developer studious (made by a friend):

7 Days to Die (2013), developed by The Fun Pimps from US (Unity engine, no #Linux support), good coop game

Divinity (2014/2017), developed by Larian Studios from Belgium (Linux support!), partially crowdfunded

Baldur's Gate III (2023), developed by Larian Studios from Belgium, RPG

The Forrest (2018), developed by Endnight Games from Canada (Unity 5 engine, no Linux support), PvE survival game

The Long Dark (2017), developed by Hinterland Studio from Canada (Unity engine, Linux support!), pretty tough survival game

Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018), developed by Warhorse Studios from Czech Republic (Cry engine, no Linux support), open world medieval single play RPG with beautiful big forrests

Valheim (2021), developed by Iron Gate from Sweden (Unity engine, Linux support!), pretty tough survival game

I got an update for Xcode today and when compiling C programs with clang, it now warns about "statement before declaration" despite the language standard set as c17 or gnu17, where this is allowed. I figured out that a work-around solution is to use 'cc' or 'gcc' instead of 'clang' as the command line compiler (they are all hardlinks in /usr/bin calling clang in the Xcode directory) which produces identical binaries but without complaining.

Currently chatting to a fellow #developer who found #radix and these are their thoughts. Its awesome and affirms my choice for choosing #scrypto over anything else when it comes to #defi development

Positive feedback about Radix/Scrypto:

why not have a decentralized economy be an actual feature of the environment
it's connected to the game, but not directly linked to the gameplay itself
and then crypto just made sense
it wasn't just slapping crypto into something because "NFT" or "web3"
it actually solved the problem
and then that led us to looking at which implementation to use
and Radix/scrypto checked all the boxes

@evan had the idea of a “#fediverse #developer network” earlier today. Pondering this, I think this is a really excellent idea. It brings under one umbrella a whole bunch of other ideas how to move the fediverse forward, and simplifies those a lot. I think we should investigate this …

What about we do a #fediforum session tomorrow on this? Maybe @davidslifka would join us, who recently talked to some potential funders for things like that I think.

Fellow developers, your job isn't going to be taken by AI, but it could be taken by a competitor of yours who will learn to use this tool to improve their productivity.

After taking the premium for this, I tried ChatGPT 4 last week and was amazed to see how it can fill in the blanks while working. I used to do it on Google and find the correct answer after browsing through dozens of wrong ones. But with this, I can set the context to be "Drupal 10" and all the suggestions and code it produces accordingly.

I may have written an amount of code in one day, which I usually do in a whole week -- and it was addictive to chat with an AI model and work in a direction for hours without losing the context.

I asked myself, "why would someone hire me and not someone else with a similar experience and who knows how to use it?"

I understood the need to know it, and I am starting to use it regularly for REGEX, open source code reading and understanding, refactoring of code, unit test and Behat test etc., and saving a few hours every day now. After years of practising manual work, they all feel like magic when done with ML's help.

It could be something else and not ChatGPT, e.g. CopilotX, but ML-based tools are changing the game, and we developers should also take the best advantage it brings.

Let's learn, adapt and evolve; that's the only way!

First encounter with a #developer who is deeply worried that his job will be replaced by #AI in the coming years.

I'm not too convinced yet that this could happen.

On the other hand, I do think that people should learn the tools to be more efficient.

That said, my first try with #ChatGPT have been somewhat unconvincing, and I'm now wondering how much exaggerated hype is happening.

A Drupal Backend developer should have a delicate balance between writing code and site-building skills.

They should know when to use existing entity types (content type, taxonomy etc.), when to create new entity types, and when to extend the existing ones.

They should know when to add a new field, re-use created ones, and develop their field type and formatter or develop just a formatter for the existing field.

They should know when to use existing views by creating a new display mode, creating unique views, or displaying the results using custom queries.

They should know when to use a contributed module, when to extend them and when to build it afresh.

And the list goes on...

If someone is better than one thing and not the other, project architecture and codebase become a mess in a few years, and then technology is blamed.

Finally I found a #codemonkey that writes these pesky #microservices and the developers can really concentrate on #business logic.

Maybe #chatgpt is not a threat for #developer, but tor the #nocode #lowcode platforms (see my post about it https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7045479657340579840/)? So instead of introducing #nlc to the #business which is then supposed to code (anyone remembers #soap?), we enable developers to be faster and doing the "important" stuff?

If you think about it, the word “Internationalization” (I18N) (the process to enable translations in software) is technically wrong. It has nothing to do with nations because languages transcend nations. The word “international” means “between nations” but I18N is not about nations at all. It's about languages.

As a replacement, I suggest "Interlingualization" (I17N).

Oh, the first 15 seconds of this video are boring but it’s your fault. Nobody was posting! 🤣

Question for the #JavaScript #developer #community: where do y'all hang out online that's NOT attached to a framework?

Are there any good Discourse forums, Discord servers, or Slack orgs for modern generic/vanilla JavaScript developer community discussions?

I find myself wanting to bounce ideas off of other developers, without the bias of a specific framework, and I haven't found a good place to do that.

Boosts for reach are much appreciated!

When you're a dev and you have to work on code you wrote 17 years ago... 🤮

Even worse when you have to try to change it to do something else, but all you want to do is burn the whole internet down so no one will ever see what you did!

I'm THAT old my old code could have grandchildren by now.

Upside: the customer is still a customer after all this time.

Downside: they don't have the funds to regularly update their site, which is a community project and gets a massive number of visitors and is in desperate need of an upgrade.

A zombie lego figure dressed in typical geek clothing showing frustration at code which appears on the screen. Realising that they themselves are responsible for the code causing them frustration.

If you're an #iOS #developer, love #opensource, and have a certain passion for email, you should definitely keep an eye on the #Thunderbird careers page!

https://www.thunderbird.net/careers/

Within the next few months, we'll be hiring someone to help us lay the groundwork for Thunderbird on iOS. When that career opportunity goes live, we will announce it here.

(So yes, we can 100% confirm we plan to develop an iOS version)

It's a bad day for the bugs: Syntax Error #2 just went out!

This month's issue talks about printing as a debugging tool and about Elm's error messages and debugging your Elm code.

Any other coders get that moment when they're being explained how something works and you're too polite to say you don't understand so you let them carry on but your brain is now mush and you don't understand any of it, even though you should and everyone else seems to understand it so am I slow or stupid or both?

#GPT4 seems to have a really good understanding of the ins and outs of the #ActivityPub spec. Hopefully this will help me wrap my head around writing a #CrystalLang library for it. #programming #openai #crystal #developer

As a #web #developer I learned today that:

"15 % of all websites, viewed in a Chrome browser, register at least one Custom Element [while] only 2.3 % of all websites use React."

So I guess building my own custom web component workbench was a good decision. 🤓
