Here is #Dickens sounding like he could have written this yesterday:
"Surely there never was such fragile china-ware as that of which the millers of Coketown were made....They were ruined, when they were required to send labouring children to school; they were ruined when inspectors were appointed to look into their works; they were ruined, when such inspectors considered it doubtful whether they were quite justified in chopping people up with their machinery; they were utterly undone, when it was hinted that perhaps they need not always make quite so much smoke."

Kudos to #CharlesDickens for contriving a way to expand a small story he had previously published. The note preceding The Portrait Painters Story explains this ballsy #writer move. Also pictured, the first page of the shorter tale in Four Ghost Stories, and the cover of The Complete Ghost Stories of Charles Dickens, edited by Peter Haning in which both stories appear.

I've just finished _Demon Copperhead_ by Barbara Kingsolver, and it was great. Hard work, and painful to read in parts, but a really good book.

Rather stunned earlier today at the passage I read in #LittleDorrit, where #Dickens takes a pointed and extended jibe at #British #xenophobia and #racism against foreigners. I’ll have to gather some more thoughts about this, and will probably blog about it in the coming days. It felt so timeless, and so Brexity. Dickens is hardly blameless in racist attitudes. His oft #antisemitism is notable. But oh, this was on point. #Brexit #Novels #VictorianLiterature #Literature #CharlesDickens #Britain

@Missrdevine That was #Dickens' early draft, but sadly his #RWNJ editor made him change it.
Today in Labor History June 11, 1381: Wat Tyler’s Rebellion was going strong. Tyler led a Peasant revolt in England, from May to June 15, 1381. The uprising began in response to a new poll tax. However, Tyler called for property to be held in common and equality for all. The peasants also wanted the right to choose their employer, rather than to be tied to a specific landlord. The rebellion contributed to the end of serfdom.
Tyler’s Rebellion has been referenced in many works of music and literature. He is the protagonist in Pierce Egan the Younger's novel “Wat Tyler, or the Rebellion of 1381 (1841),” a radical text published as a propaganda piece during the Chartist movement, as an argument for a republican government. Charles Dickens invokes Wat Tyler’s name in “Bleak House” (1853). Tyler also appears as a sympathetic hero in “A Dream of John Ball” (1888) by the socialist writer William Morris. And he appears in Melville’s “Redburn” and in Twain’s “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.”

@gutenberg_org. Many moons ago, my mother insisted I read a #Dickens novel before reading what I really wanted to read -- #LoveStory. I chose #DavidCopperfield. Thanks mom for helping me to become someone who loves #reading (no matter what!) and #literature and writes about it for a living!
@gutenberg_org Contemporary #Tories would fucking hate #Dickens, they would dismiss him as 'woke' but it's why his stories have lasted for so long.
TIL, thanks to reading Dickens' David Copperfield, that the past participle of the verb, 'chide', used to be 'chid'. And now I want to bring it back!

And all over the world, the old literature, the popular literature, is the same. It consists of very dignified sorrow and very undignified fun. Its sad tales are of broken hearts; its happy tales are of broken heads.

Has anyone ever informed #republican lawmakers that Charles #Dickens didn’t write instruction manuals?
I went for an after-work bike ride with my friend this week. A beautiful ride through the country lanes of Kent.
We stopped at St James' church, Cooling. Charles Dickens saw these tiny graves and used them in Great Expectations as a basis for the "lozenge" shaped graves of Pip's brothers and sisters. Very moving.

As #Dickens put it in #HardTimes, industry is always so "fragile" that whenever we try to regulate them they scream they'll be "ruined", when all we typically ask is that they be held "accountable for the consequences of any of [their] acts."
#Regulation of the #fishing #industry, for example, tries to address consequences of their actions such as this. Is that so wrong?

Asylum seeker barge plan would face legal challenge
The plan is to house in a barge off Portland - which is bleak!
More Great Expectations than Bleak House - #Dickens would have a field day lambasting the current crew in power & their treatment of the disadvantaged
Portland residents already had to suffer a prison in their midst - that's how #toriesOut treat poorer communities - when they open a migrant centre in the Cotswolds I might beleive they are sincere in governing for all

@ichbindabomb Have to add the most brilliant anglophile show at the moment -- Slow Horses. Crackling writing, great cast (Gary Oldman & Kirstin Scott Thomas) and breakout performance (Jack Lowden). If Dickens was still around, he could have created these characters. (Also, yeah, I agree The Bodyguard is good.)

I've always had this vague memory of seeing a Charles Dickens manuscript in a small town museum as a child. And literally NOBODY mentioned it, even my English teacher when I was studying the same book for O Level.
But it turns out Wisbech museum does have the full original manuscript for Great Expectations, and I've wasted decades not telling people this cool fact. #Wisbech #Dickens #GreatExpectations
The new FX/BBC adaptation of Great Expectations is dark and gritty and muddy and full of four-letter words and lit by a single blue flashlight, with Matt Berry playing The Exposition in his Matt Berry-est voice and Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham chewing the scenery like she's in a French and Saunders sketch.
But honestly? Most of the college kids to whom I used to teach the novel had some vision of #Dickens out of a Muppet Christmas Carol, and a little period squalor never hurt anyone.
I'm greatly indebted to the swivel-eyed loons having conniptions about the latest #BBC adaptation of #Dickens.
I hadn't heard of it and would probably not have bothered without their "recommendations".
Having watched the first episode, I now have #GreatExpectations(!) for the rest of the series.

Since I was teaching orthogonal #polynomials (OPs), I asked my class whether they’d read Great Expectations by #Dickens, which you may remember had APs :)
One advantage of reading David Copperfield and Demon Copperhead at the same time is that when one gets too sad/intense I can switch to the other. About halfway through both at this point. Anyone know a good essay comparing the two? #amreading #VictorianLit #Dickens #litfic

If you like dystopian fiction, definitely try 1984, as well as Huxley's Brave New World, and Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.
But the books that got really got me into classic English #literature were Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone and The Woman in White. They're both detective stories, and great fun. After that, perhaps some #Dickens? My favourites are David Copperfield and a Tale of Two Cities. Then, who knows? You may even enjoy Austen now 😊

I was quite disappointed to learn that "gaol" is not pronounced somewhere between "goal" and "ghoul" as I thought it was, but--unsurprisingly--like "jail" 🤨
And here I thought that "gaoler" had a nice ring to it! A lichen on wet prison walls ring to it, a disease-ridden foggy air to it. But, no ... plain old "jailer" ...

#Reading “The Chimes” from #Dickens’ #Christmas #Books has shown me how much I, due to my familiarity with the characters and events depicted in those novels of his with which I am familiar, have overlooked the truly biting social commentary of which he was capable. Coming to a previously unread, and indeed previously unknown to me, work of his, the raw power of his social criticism is undiluted by familiarity and strikes with staggering force. #bookstodon @bookstodon #novels

The curtains of the bed were drawn aside; starting up into a half-recumbent attitude, Scrooge found himself face to face with the unearthly visitor who drew them.
It was a strange figure -- like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man, viewed through some supernatural medium, which gave him the appearance of having receded from the view, and being diminished to a child's proportions.

Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge's name was good upon anything.
Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate.
Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait; made his eyes red, his thin lips blue and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice.
