I should write a blog post about how the "information grounds" of the disinformation and extremism studies (DES) community went into abeyance and the participants "went to ground" over the last four months. There really needs to be a safe place for the DES community to do their thing and this site isn't it for a variety of reasons.
Either way, the information need driving the formation of the DES community and information ground on Twitter over the last 6+ years hasn't diminished (quite the opposite), which is the normal reason a grounds goes into abeyance. It's obviously the case that the community is under a multi-pronged attack and needs a considered effort to create the ability to continue to work on these issues.

Just found my first weird, clearly AI-written article. This was on the FIRST PAGE of a Google search for Terry Kath, even ABOVE terrykath.com. Read the text of the second image and see if you can find the MULTIPLE things that are weird/wrong. The issue here? Confusion. Disinformation. AI is a problem at the very *least* just for that aspect alone.
The article claims it was written by "Eric". So I checked another article of his.

The internet is just going to fully become this weird place where *nothing* is real or believable anymore.
Questioning things is good for intelligent thought, and the internet can often be a shady place. But the same problem started with images and videos a few years back, even offline, when you couldn't always believe what you saw (think tabloids). These days, any visual medium can be pretty easily faked and manipulated with Photoshop, Blender, Maya, etc.
Now, AI is generating what at first glance, appears to be semi-believable text. But upon closer inspection, there are bizarre and inhuman spots in the writing.
Basically, we're just going to need to *always* remember to verify things we see for truth and accuracy. I mean, if you're into that kind of thing, I guess.
It's a weird new age. And not the *fun* kind of weird.

The idea that prominent hate speech, #pseudoscience, #disinformation etc should be countered by more, better speech is correct, but woefully incomplete. Very often, by the time bad speech gains enough prominence to require rebuttal, its proponents have already won—both in the sense of having reaped the tangible rewards of notoriety (clicks, money, fame), and in the sense of bad ideas having already taken root as belief in people’s minds.
Thanks that is a really informative article. The distinction between personal protection and population wasn't at all obvious so it's great to see it drawn out.
I'm not surprised that NYT promotes disingenuous and incorrect information on this subject as it does on others.
