Milliways: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
A long time ago, there was a radio series called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It was about a man named Arthur Dent, who with the aid of his friend Ford Prefect managed to escape from the Earth when it was demolished to make way for a hyperspace byp

Would be a shame, if this post somehow went “viral” and tons of people left a nice rating to “ruin” this for me *wink* 😜😏 So, please refrain from boosting this! *cough*
Just sharing the link to prove that the count is actually 42 and definitely not to encourage anyone to rate or review my app: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/meditation-timer-zenitizer/id6444767911 🙃
Eén van de leukste personages van The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is Bowerick Wowbagger, die na - per ongeluk onsterfelijk te worden - besluit alle wezens in het universum persoonlijk en in alfabetische volgorde te beledigen. Soms wil ik dat ook. #TheHitchhikersGuideToTheGalaxy #DouglasAdams #FortyTwo
Am I the first to notice that the name of Douglas Adams' 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' is totally misleading? It is not a guide to the galaxy (which of the trillions of galaxies in existence would that even be?) but to the whole Universe.
Why did he misname the book like that? Of course, 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe' sounds a bit lame, so I guess that answers that question...
Oh I totally get that man.... Though I my case I'm too lazy to do calculations in my head... 🤣
"For a moment or two the old man didn’t reply. He was staring at the instruments with the air of one who is trying to convert Fahrenheit to centigrade in his head whilst his house is burning down."
The song is based on an incident in a LA bar, but the title is from a character in one of the best SF book series ever (I'll fight you over that statement) –
Radiohead, "Paranoid Android" (1997)
"Please, could you stop the noise?
I'm trying to get some rest
From all the unborn chicken voices in my head …"
Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 11 Thursday 09/11/23
TL:DR It took you 8 hours to pick a kettle, what are you on Squirrel ! Or : is this squirrel autistic or just anally retentive ?
Day 4 of the great lurgy outbreak of November ‘23 , & you find you’re fave squirrel feeling much better, a little less snotty & a lot more mentally agile! EDITORS NOTE: (You may live ot regret this, I’m on a roll! )
Talking with friends today it occurred to me that another aspect of my personality may be ASD related.
Bear with me here the logic may , or may not hold together.
I take a LONG time to make a decision a lot of the time especially if its a fairly open ended and low importance, wether it’s what to have for lunch or what kind of kettle I want to buy to replace a busted one.
I know that while not particularly change resistant consciously my unconscious ASD mind is not at all fond of change - put a mug away in the wronng place, or indeed the wrong way round & it will trigger me!
I know that I am very detailed orientated, & like to know the ins & outs of my kit (if not my lunch 😂) . Again fairly classic ASD .
I hate waste with a vengence, it does my tree in ! ASD related OCD you say, probably say I!
Let’s take these ingredients & apply them to making a choice of say . . . a kettle 😁
Prime requirements are :
a) It should boil water efficiently.
b) It should be big enough.
c) It should have a visible level indicator.
d) It should have an on/off led
e) It should be robust .
f) It should look ok
g) It should not suffer from design faults discovered on previous kettles
h) It should be value for money, preferably in a sale of some flavour!
So here we see the attention to detail kicking in, not even started looking yet.
It can take an hour to create a list of candidates from online stores.
Then we have to weed out the manufacturers we don’t like.
Now the serious work begins, energy efficiency ratings to be compared, price on various sites to be checked , aesthetics to be considered in comparison to the existing kettle, reviews to be read and compared.
Now we’re down to a shortlist of maybe 3 or 4, elapsed time about 5 hours.
Here we enter what #DouglasAdams would call the ‘Dark teatime of the Soul’ that period of ooohming & ahhhing over the final candidates, the “oooh that one ! “ moments , followed swiftly by the “yes but, on the other hand” moments.
Everyone in present at the time & indeed reading this going - “Just , for the love of humanity , CHOOSE ! “
Finally 8 hours later , the kettle Parfait, purchased !
I suspect the final phase is largely my ASD whispering “can you not fix the broken kettle! Look this new one is different because ….! “
So I leave you with this final chain of thought:
It shouldn’t take 8 hours to pick a kettle, really it’s a kettle !
Don’t even ask how long it takes me to pick a new TV, or worse Laptop!
I feel that the ND attributes I know to be present in myself are playing a role here, that my unconscious mind is fighting every step of the way to reduce the list of choices to make the choice easy, by setting strict boundary conditions. Then promptly changing tack & fighting tooth and nail to make the simplest choice of all - not to change !
This has been a somewhat tortuous road to write & I suspect read, & the logic may , or may not hold together.
I value input on this from across the neural spectrum 🙏
Thanks to those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you ! 😊🐿️🖖
These lines from #therestaurantattheendoftheuniverse by #douglasadams are a satire on the extent of selfishness and shortsightedness we as humans can be sometimes prone to, as seen all too commonly around us.

Douglas Adams's Babel Fish is near
I, for one, am all for our our Lord and Savior, the #cat !! 🤣 🤣
"‘It’s nothing to do with me,’ he said, ‘I am not involved with people. The Lord knows I am not a cruel man.’
‘Ah!’ barked Zarniwoop, ‘you say “The Lord”. You believe in something!’
‘My cat,’ said the man benignly, picking it up and stroking it. ‘I call him The Lord..." from #therestaurantattheendoftheuniverse by #douglasadams ( #thehitchikersguidetothegalaxy series)
Another group of scholars recently coined a useful term to describe this ripoff: in a paper published last week, @timoreilly, #MarianaMazzucato and #IlanStrauss dubbed the costs of all this complexity #AttentionRents:
The whole "bovine" joke in #therestaurantattheendoftheuniverse by #douglasadams was hilarious. It got me thinking: how would I feel if an animal I was about to consume came up to me enthusiastically conveying its consent for being eaten? I will be horrified, just like Arthur! But why?
Will it be better to eat against its consent instead? Why?
Then… what about salad's consent?!🤣
Interesting thought experiment...
The Hitchhiker’s Guide was famously written by correspondents like Ford Prefect. It wasn’t an #AI that made shit up based on some random sub-ether drivel. As a result, it was useful.
Curiously enough, an edition of The Guide that fell through a time warp from a thousand years in the future defined the executive board of X as “a bunch of mindless jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came”.
A true sense of proportion of the infinity of the universe with respect to humanity fills me with wonder, but may also sometimes lead one to have an existential crisis. I think I would definitely be interested in trying the Total Perspective Vortex!
LOL now that's an interesting piece of logic 🤣🤣
‘The argument goes something like this: “I refuse to prove that I exist,” says God, “for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.”
‘“But,” says Man, “the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn’t it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don’t. QED.”
Ok Peeps , I’m gonna go make a coffee & beat the living daylights out of some Scorched & Super Mutants on FO76
They will of course be wearing EDF insignias in my imagination .
Eat Radioactive tipped arrows you buggers !
⌨️📴 Try not to break the interweb while I’m away 😁😜😁
Although initially thought by BBC executives to be un-filmable, the series was successfully produced & directed by Alan J. W. Bell & went on to win a Royal Television Society Award as Most Original Programme of 1981, as well as several British Academy Television Awards for its graphics & editing.

In the beginning the internet was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Do you like #DouglasAdams, specifically his Dirk Gently series?
Maybe you've read the #books, maybe you've only seen the BBC or Netflix shows based off them, maybe you're shaking your head to all of this.
Regardless of however you responded internally, I invite you to check out a free chapter from my #book,
Pocket of Fortune - The present of being present
It was written as an homage to Adams who is a personal idol of mine.
Please check it out here, it's a quick read!❤️
#Introduction I'm Eclectic Lee, a middle-aged geek/nerd who's into #ComedyMusic (#WeirdAl, #TheFuMP), #ClassicVideoGames (#Atari), & #ComicBooks (#RomSpaceknight, #NewUniverse). I particularly like when those interests cross over (#PacManFever, #AtariForce). Minor interests include #DouglasAdams, #StarWars, #StarTrek, #DoctorWho & #TheatreOrgan. I hate politics, but will occasionally boost a political post, although I try to keep it positive. I've been on this Internet thing since the 1990s.
This Douglas Adams quote from 'The Salmon of Doubt' never stops being relevant, especially in a time where we've witnessed the damage disinformation and hate speech can cause. Lives have been literally lost, both by people spreading lies during the pandemic, and by bigoted rhetoric targeting women and marginalized groups. Legitimizing such views as just "difference of opinion" instead of challenging them for what they are only causes further harm.
“You don’t understand what you decide in this shack affects the lives & fates of millions of people? This is all monstrously wrong!”
“I don’t know. I’ve never met these people you speak of. & neither, I suspect, have you. They only exist in words we hear. It is folly to say you know what is happenin to other people. Only they know, if they exist. They have their own Universes of their own eyes and ears.”
I wanted to do a late #FollowFriday for some people who have helped make Mastodon fun and supportive during my time here, but whom I may not have mentioned yet. Thanks to all of you!

🛸 Happy Towel Day to those who celebrate.
Have you read a good book lately? One you'd be willing to wear a towel around town to commemorate the author every year?
I would wear a lilac today too if I had a lilac tree and if they were still in bloom this time of year.
