Am I the first to notice that the name of Douglas Adams' 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' is totally misleading? It is not a guide to the galaxy (which of the trillions of galaxies in existence would that even be?) but to the whole Universe.

Why did he misname the book like that? Of course, 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe' sounds a bit lame, so I guess that answers that question...

Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 11 Thursday 09/11/23

TL:DR It took you 8 hours to pick a kettle, what are you on Squirrel ! Or : is this squirrel autistic or just anally retentive ?

Day 4 of the great lurgy outbreak of November ‘23 , & you find you’re fave squirrel feeling much better, a little less snotty & a lot more mentally agile! EDITORS NOTE: (You may live ot regret this, I’m on a roll! )

Talking with friends today it occurred to me that another aspect of my personality may be ASD related.

Bear with me here the logic may , or may not hold together.

I take a LONG time to make a decision a lot of the time especially if its a fairly open ended and low importance, wether it’s what to have for lunch or what kind of kettle I want to buy to replace a busted one.

I know that while not particularly change resistant consciously my unconscious ASD mind is not at all fond of change - put a mug away in the wronng place, or indeed the wrong way round & it will trigger me!

I know that I am very detailed orientated, & like to know the ins & outs of my kit (if not my lunch 😂) . Again fairly classic ASD .

I hate waste with a vengence, it does my tree in ! ASD related OCD you say, probably say I!

Let’s take these ingredients & apply them to making a choice of say . . . a kettle 😁

Prime requirements are :
a) It should boil water efficiently.
b) It should be big enough.
c) It should have a visible level indicator.
d) It should have an on/off led
e) It should be robust .
f) It should look ok
g) It should not suffer from design faults discovered on previous kettles
h) It should be value for money, preferably in a sale of some flavour!

So here we see the attention to detail kicking in, not even started looking yet.

It can take an hour to create a list of candidates from online stores.

Then we have to weed out the manufacturers we don’t like.

Now the serious work begins, energy efficiency ratings to be compared, price on various sites to be checked , aesthetics to be considered in comparison to the existing kettle, reviews to be read and compared.

Now we’re down to a shortlist of maybe 3 or 4, elapsed time about 5 hours.

Here we enter what #DouglasAdams would call the ‘Dark teatime of the Soul’ that period of ooohming & ahhhing over the final candidates, the “oooh that one ! “ moments , followed swiftly by the “yes but, on the other hand” moments.
Everyone in present at the time & indeed reading this going - “Just , for the love of humanity , CHOOSE ! “

Finally 8 hours later , the kettle Parfait, purchased !

I suspect the final phase is largely my ASD whispering “can you not fix the broken kettle! Look this new one is different because ….! “

So I leave you with this final chain of thought:
It shouldn’t take 8 hours to pick a kettle, really it’s a kettle !
Don’t even ask how long it takes me to pick a new TV, or worse Laptop!
I feel that the ND attributes I know to be present in myself are playing a role here, that my unconscious mind is fighting every step of the way to reduce the list of choices to make the choice easy, by setting strict boundary conditions. Then promptly changing tack & fighting tooth and nail to make the simplest choice of all - not to change !

This has been a somewhat tortuous road to write & I suspect read, & the logic may , or may not hold together.
I value input on this from across the neural spectrum 🙏

The whole "bovine" joke in #therestaurantattheendoftheuniverse by #douglasadams was hilarious. It got me thinking: how would I feel if an animal I was about to consume came up to me enthusiastically conveying its consent for being eaten? I will be horrified, just like Arthur! But why?
Will it be better to eat against its consent instead? Why?
Then… what about salad's consent?!🤣
