The right glove was wet. The left glove, on the other hand, remained dry. <— I just encountered a literal and figurative “on the other hand” in a paper 😳
(Actual sentence was not about gloves but I changed it because NDA 😇)
I’m looking at a paper that has been to a Professional Medical Editor™️ and then QC’d by someone, and….the mother fucking spell checker is off. 😮💨
So there’s shit like “metastasess” in it. 🤕
Wow... stuff is happening all at once and I'm not even sure if I'm done with it or not. 😝
But I will update and tell you everything when I can...
(PS... don't worry the dog and the parents are fine... me who knows? 🙃)
Another 1500 words today on The Spores of Wrath! Done with chapter 1 and started on chapter 2. Off to Split tomorrow!

#Monday! Lots to do: #writing, #editing, groceries, and cleaning. Wheee...
Time to crank the tunes. The Tragically Hip - Poets
It is warmer today than it has been in a little while so of course the dog has been begging me for ice cubes, all the ice cubes: big ones, little ones, half melted down ones and I'm expected to give her ever more. She won't stop and she can't stop, at least until I run out of ice...
Had a quiet morning and got about 1200 words on The Spores of Wrath, before embarking on our cruise! Hopefully will finish up chapter 1 tomorrow morning.

I did 47 mins on my chapter. Second chunk in two days! Trying to get unjammed after a 2 month hiatus. #Editing in half hour chunks is not ideal, but it's all I've got 🤷♂️
So you remember that plant that all of the flowers fell off except for one ginormous flower in the middle? Of course you do ...
Well,
all the flowers grew back on this plant literally over night. This thing is a resilient little mo'fo so if you think you're losing all your flowers just wait they're going to come back stronger than ever💪
Got a little more written on The Spores of Wrath, and outlined where this section is going. Most of the way done with chapter 1!

In case you need a story of defiance today, I got you:
Last night when we went to look at the stars we thought the plant with the cool flowers that only blooms at night had lost all their flowers but out of nowhere this big (I'm talking half the plant big) flower opened up and was like love me.
It was kind of cool so be like that plant.✊

One nice thing about editing is getting another paper from a long-time client and seeing how much his writing improves each time – both the prose and the LaTeX – and how his research programme is progressing, layer upon layer.
Alas, I still haven't warmed to his subject. Maybe another year?

This is my second time reading Dreyer’s section on apostrophes, and it still makes me giggle.
There’s something about an accomplished editor using all caps in their book that hits just right. (Side note, see how he set the word “caps lock” in small caps when he referred to key itself.)
Pics are from “Dreyer’s English” by Benjamin Dreyer, pages 36 and 37.

Ugh, I've been #editing so long today that I saw "comprise" and wondered if that was a British spelling.
For the last couple of days I’ve been testing #CaptureOne, hoping to replace #Adobe completely. Why? I’m sure anyone who’s ever worked with #Lightroom professionally knows why. I have some high end production jobs I need to do, and LR went completely bonkers, on a powerful machine built for jobs such as this, mind you.
Got another 1500 words written today on The Spores of Wrath! Traveling tomorrow, so I should get a good bit of time to write then as well.
And then I'll be in Greece!

Spelling error caught in the wild, details changed to protect the guilty:
"She'd been accused of persuing her employees."
How I read it:
"She'd been accused of perusing her employees." In other words, she browses through her employees like books in a library, looking for one she likes. 📚👀
What they meant:
"She'd been accused of pursuing her employees." 🙅♂️🏃♀️
"Peruse"/"pursue" confusion is fairly common. The spelling error adds extra spice to the usual mixup.

I'll say this again. If you're offering your editing services to writers, it behooves you to have applied your highest skills to your own blog posts. In particular, if your posts read like 2005 era keyword stuffing is still a thing, the note in my list of editors will be "blog is poorly edited", which is the kiss of death.

Hey #Writers
How long do you wait between finishing your first draft and then editing it?
I only finished my first draft of Book 2 in my series a week ago, and after today’s outlining session on Book 3, I’m kinda itching to get on with the editing of Book 2, so I can get into writing Book 3 as soon as possible.
Just wondering if I need more time between my first draft and edits.

Is copyediting your own books a bad idea? I feel like I’m a solid copyeditor, due to both natural aptitude and experience from content writing jobs where I was required to self-edit and strictly adhere to AP Style, but I’m not sure whether I would be expected to hire a copyeditor if I choose to go the self-pub route with my books.
(I already know I’ll need a developmental editor. That’s the part I’m not so great at.)

I’m back! Yeah, it’s been a while.
I’ve been dealing with some health issues. I’m doing loads better now. I’m even #writing again. My new medication has done wonders.
I finished the first draft of my second novel yesterday! A total of 92,466 words. I wrote 2/3 of it in an almost frenzy this past four weeks. I had so much fun writing it. I’m taking a well-earned break, but I’m looking forward to the #editing process. And when that’s done, onto book 3 in the series and beyond.
I’m so grateful to be writing again. It’s actually painful for me when I can’t write for whatever reason. Can anyone else relate?

From Tape To Computers; A Journey
One interesting aspect of being #GenX is experiencing the evolution from analog to digital audio. I learned how to edit audio using a reel-to-reel machine. To “splice” was to literally cut physical tape with a razor blade, and then use special audio tape to rejoin the two cut ends.
In general, I think digital is better. It’s more accessible, and so more democratic (e.g. home studios). Digital also tends to sound better, unless you like hissing and popping sounds.
But man do I prefer hardware over software, still to this day. And not just for audio.
I’m glad I grew up in a more analog, physical world.

Real pig-in-shit moment as a #copyeditor and #proofreader coming up with a coherent set of style choices for replacing textual brackets with other punctuation, so that my decisions become intelligible to the author and to other editors
This is specific to works that use author–date citation styles, to reserve brackets for the citations and for supplementary info, e.g. "World War II (1939–1945)"
But it's also just refreshing for me to codify a set of choices that was previously intuitive to me. I've learned grammar post-hoc to understand why certain choices feel 'right' or 'wrong', and I still often don't know certain linguistic terms; I'm a Gestalt editor who reads holistically for meaning
I swear to god, I feel at my most neurodivergent when I'm going deep on semantics
it embarrasses me to suspect that other people don't think so hard about "what words mean"
they probably think I'm splitting hairs, but to me, it's vital to express myself absolutely precisely
“I am merely a humble servant of the Scarlet Pimpernel,” Tony said austerely.
“You told Monsieur and Madame to call you Anthony,” Fleurette pointed out.
Tony coughed. “Yes, well, one can’t necessarily have everyone calling people ‘you’ all the time, it’d get so beastly confused." #editing
Is there a Davinchi Resolve plugin or something to mimic the style of YouTube Shorts' text?
We're working on Shorts, but my editor uses davinchi. Obvious backup is make the video, put in shorts editor, then put text, but it's a bit cumbersome.

As I look back at my first several proofreading and editing projects, I remember punctuation discoveries, intriguing topics, and cozy workspaces.
Over the past 9 years, my expertise has evolved and my workspaces have changed. Some things are the same:
• I get very excited about punctuation.
• I check my instincts against style manuals.
• I love helping writers find the perfect fix for an awkward sentence.
• I'm honored and humbled when authors entrust me with their work.

What makes creating things fun is the process of making it, having something like a video intro automatically made for me sounds extremely boring.

Hello! My friend @JanetWordsmith and I are looking for Mastodon's editing community.
Kind and lovely (and happy) folks who raise an eyebrow at participles that dangle, splicing commas, verbs that don't align with subjects, (etc) while keeping the writer's voice.

I have to say, editing 300 pages, as compared to 3k words for one assignment, is still tough: It takes time and, although highly interesting, is a little stressful at times. However, from time to time, even though not as frequently as I used to write, I enjoy #editing. So if you are looking for an #editor and don't mind him doing that in his spare time, don't be shy.

#amEditing #introduction Hi! 👋🏻
Besides writing stuff for some decades, I discovered #editing for me a little recentlier. It all started in an online community where I read stories and posted my own. I was looking for an editor. When I found him, an author himself and a good friend thereafter, we agreed on editing each others stories. One thing, I learned from that, is that chemistry is key for #continuousEditing in combination with #continuousPublishing.
A 🧵

So I'm watching videos on YouTube about editing YouTube videos (lol that sentence), and I'm realizing just how bad my past attempts at having a YouTube channel were. I basically didn't edit my videos, no wonder nobody watched them lollll 🤣
Did some editing this afternoon and submitted my romance novel to a few publishers. Not expecting anything but I don’t feel like self publishing this one and nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
I really should now edit this other novel I finished a while ago, but I have a wonderful idea for a new book which I’d love to start on. Starting something new is always more exciting than editing but I should be good and put my other novels to bed before starting a new one.
