So I wanted to post something that is difficult and sad. It has a kernel that might be helpful for some others though. Both people who have, but also those who haven't, experienced childhood abuse.
I have hearing damage from all the childhood beatings, ruptured eardrums etc.
That really uncomfortable grating explosion aftermath damage noise they put in movies, that's the sound that's tormented me most of my life. There's also a low whooshing that can grow to a jets landing on a aircraft carrier sort of thing.
I didn't do anything about it until my 40s. I should have, but I didn't. Hearing aids have really helped a lot. Not just do they let me follow conversations, do my work and appreciate music etc better. They also actively prevent part of the damage frequencies from growing out of control, they literally reduce the stress/discomfort it contributes. Realising I need music helps too (sorry for all the music posts).
It was free to seek help on the NHS. Entirely Free. I could have afforded care anyway too. I knew others could seek help. I would have sent others to get help. I would be horrified at anyone else experiencing anything of a fraction. I could have got help anytime after leaving home at 18. I have had people who would have wanted me to get help at times. But I simply was not able to translate that to selfcare. Care for others no problem, selfcare no. Similarly with a life threatening situation (all taken care of long ago) it took months & another to get me to address that.
Here's the useful bit (maybe).... So what's the take away?
It's not just a twee meme about loving yourself & all that. Challenging childhoods can leave people with no proper framework of concepts for actually receiving love or care, for the possibility of their own needs being met, even survival needs. There will be people in your life who won't talk about abuse, likely because they will have been silenced in a way that makes their abuse seem irrelevant to them & not even worth mentioning or talking about. They might be fiercely protective of others, care for others, but can't easily do for themselves.
I'm not saying bust in there & drag them in to discussing stuff unless they are ready for facing (& going through) it all! They will know when & what they can handle! What I am saying is look out for the ones who maybe minimise or disregard their stuff.
Remind them they would want OTHERS to take care of it. Keep reminding them that YOU want them to take care of their things and not just exist with them. It's possible they can do it for YOU, far far easier than they can do it for themselves.

Also I had no idea hearing damage in that way had ever been put on film. It's a brilliant watch & gave me a huge new appreciation for a great talent.

Just finished a rewatch of 2008's #RoleModels with #PaulRudd. I'd forgotten what a fun movie it is! I recommend watching it with your kids because it's so heartwarming, even though the humor is pretty blue. It's middle school boy locker room type of humor -- and a total gas.
