Past emissions from the British Empire "double the UK's climate responsibility", making it one of the biggest CO2 emitters in history. Carbon Brief, the British news website dedicated to global warming, takes into account carbon dioxide emissions from countries formerly under British colonial rule, mainly the destruction of forests in India, Burma and Nigeria before their independence. This new data moves the United Kingdom from eighth to fourth place in the list of countries with the highest historical emissions, behind the United States, China and Russia.

Been scratching my head as to why the ribbon spools would not come off the Empire Aristocrat. They're not the originals but look the right type, Group 9. After checking it wasn't an obscure lever or clip, a decent grip and pull worked and the issue was degraded stickers on the bases that had glued the spool down over the years, probably 20+

Some keys are jammed down solid but the typebars loose, and some typebars slightly misaligned and catch on others.
Carriage seems ok.
It looks good, no rust on the outside but needs cleaning.
Luckily there seem to be a lot of online resources to help out with taking it apart and fixing.

In discussions of Russia's invasion of Ukraine (a horrific and completely unjustified act of military aggression), I often see people claiming the US are the "good guys". That they'd never invade another country and indiscriminately kill its people like Russia are in Ukraine.
Next time you see someone doing that, please remind them the heroism of people like Daniel Hale, who expose this as the blatant propaganda it is. The US does this constantly.

I often read texts that suggest that there is a concept of #Empire that everyone is relating to, but so far no one has bothered to explain to me what this is supposed to be. Apparently, it is more than just a dynastic or multi- or supranational state. Sometimes it is suggested that the concept is related to the Holy Roman Empire and its relation to the #Catholic Church. And that a genuine empire has a claim to the world.
Anyone care to explicate?
The indenture system was revived in the #british #empire after #abolition of #slavery there. Indentured labour from #india affected both the demography and the politics of of #guyana markedly but was not negligible in #trinidad either. And the effect was not confined to the former slave colonies of the #caribbean. There were also impacts in Fiji and kwazulu/natal. So while indenture developed into slavery in the seventh century in the way described it also replaced it later on.
