Totally correct Harriett. Also May was told that vote was flawed but she carried on regardless.

So while the #English continue to vote for #tories then they will continue to make us all suffer.

I use to have compassion for those who voted Leave and fell for the lies. It has all faded away now. I think they have to feel with the full consequences of vote before they get to start talking about #rejoining

Casual reminder that the #English #loanword "nice" looks like it is becoming more and more normalized in #German. From what I observe it is still mostly used by younger speakers, but including early twenties, and not just in simple affirmative predicative usages ("Nice!"), but also with attributive usages in the nominative or accusative case, here two recent examples:
attributive "nice", nominative case: "Ein richtig nicer Job!" [20.5., female speaker, in conversation with male, both twenty-somethings, Leipzig]
attributive "nice", accusative: "Und ich hab nicht son nicen Park in der Nähe, also nicht so wirklich" [28.5., female speaker, in conversation with female, again both twenty-somethings, Leipzig]

Maybe it is time that the English changed the voting system to PR to allow a wider range of politicians & political parties to be represented.

If not, then the #English need to learn the benefits of tactical voting, which #NI people have been practicing for quite sometime. Then the #Tories might not have the control they do. Plus the idea of a coalition government wouldn't cause such pearl clutching in the #English media.

My family come from a very staunchly British, Protestant, #Unionist Monarchist background

On one side, it's a mixture of United-Frees & Jehovah's Witnesses with a sprinkling of masonry

The other side are a mixture of Orange & high-anglican Royal Household, Balmoral, staff

I'm #English & #Scottish. I'm non-religious, pro #Independence & #republican. My family are now too. Why?

Those Unionist communities couldn't reconcile with my existence as an #lgbtq person

I note the word "they" is oftentimes used more as a proper noun than as a pronoun, especially on social media, or at least so it seems to me. I want to call this the conspiratorial "They".

Shouldn't these uses be capitalized to show the distinction.

When Johnny says "They're coming to get you, Barbara" (Romero, 1968) he refers to an (upper case) singular abstraction quite different from the (lower case) plural "they" that were actually coming to get her.

I find the internationalisation (or should that be "internationaliZation) of language during my lifetime (57 years) quite fascinating. The way it shows that nothing is set, everything is fluid & things are constantly changing. Here in Australia, we leaned towards British spelling & pronunciation when I was young, now so much is the (usually simpler/easier) American. When I post a toot & am adding hashtags, I'll often try different spellings of the same word & choose the one which is more popular. Words such as "behaviour" (UK/AU) vs "behavior" (US), "specialisation" (AU/UK) vs "specialization" (US) etc.

And, of course, there are the changes in pronunciation. I noticed a few years ago that even the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) had started pronouncing "data" as "day-ta" rather than the "dar-ta" that I still use.

As I said, language is fluid - it changes all the time.

So I found it quite interesting a few minutes ago when I read a reader comment on a newspaper article about this line:

"But in his budget reply speech, Dutton nickle-and-dimed the individual measures in the budget..."

The comment:

"What does nickel and dime mean? I know it's American money but I've never heard of the term. Surely not know (sic) in Australia?"

And it had me thinking - I wonder if that commenter still uses the term "penny wise & pound foolish", 57 years after Australia stopped using pennies & pounds & replaced them with dollars & cents? #language #Australia #English

#multilingual households are a joy

at my place we have (or used to have :ablobcatheartbroken: ) jokes whose understanding requires basic knowledge of three languages: #English, #tamil and #spanish.

I think that any group of humans sharing a friendly space can create such niche jokes, it's just that it tickles my intelect when it happens between languages. Specially if these languages don't mix very often.

Hi there, dear curious being!

You can find me under the names of sowa (Polish for owl) or sowi (short version for hard-for-non-Polish sowiszcze). I avoid using my given name. I use he/his/him pronouns generally. I'm from #Poland, so I know #Polish (#polski) as my native tongue, but use #English way more often, at least on the Internet. I'm learning #Finnish (#suomi) using tools like #Duolingo.

My wife and I have been taking care of #bunny (well, plural should be here) for many years and currently, I'm a #bundad of four #rabbit(s). I can tell you quite a lot about them and show you a lot of their #photos. I love #parrots, too (and #birds in general).

I like a good #Meme or #DadJoke. If you saw sowa on #Imgur or sowiszcze on #reddit - that was me. Also, #DarkHumor is in my domain, since I'm a #Millennial hahaha.

I'm into all things #Pokémon. This includes #Nintendo #Switch #games, #PokémonGO, #PokémonMastersEX, and #collecting #TCG #cards. I foster a small local #community of PGO players, treating #Discord as the main place of operation. I like(d) attending PGO #GOFest and #SafariZone. I've also been involved in #TheSilphRoad for a few years now.

If it runs on #electricity, it's probably a #hobby of mine. Biggest of them being, in no particular order: #IoT and #SmartHome (#HomeAssistant, #ESPHome), #SelfHosting, #PCBuilding, #3DPrinting, #3DModeling. Of course, I picked an #IT related career, so I'm a #SoftwareEngineer. I play #games on #NintendoSwitch, #Playstation, and sometimes #PC. I prefer #IndieGames or relaxing ones.

I can occasionally #vent about stuff, #driving being my main source of anger. On that note, I can be considered #neurodivergent because of my #depression and #anxiety. I try and advocate for the improvement of #MentalHealth everywhere.

Other notable hobbies of mine include #refurbishing, #reusing, #upcycling, #scrum, #agile, #dotnet, #csharp, #electronics, #diy, #fixing, #fiddling, #technology, #fantasy, #NordicMythology, #music, #Szczecin, #tinnitus, #cooking, #baking, #photography

Love #fountainpens and ink!

I have a black belt in #karate, and study kenpo at Tracy's Karate.

Here's a new #introduction:

Hi from #Taiwan. I teach #English to children. By the time I see them, many are exhausted from a full day of public school. It's an interesting challenge.

The #teaching experience has piqued my curiosity about broader issues of #engagement, #receptivity, #attention, and #language. (1/2)

Help.

I need #English books to read to my daughter (9).

She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

Ideas?

Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.

I love the words that English borrowed from Arabic that have the definite article (= the) as part of the word: alcohol, algebra, alfalfa. Imagine if we had cohol, gebra, and falfa instead!

Have you heard the "positive" "or anything," that's kind of a substitute for "and stuff"? For example, "As kids, we would play Monopoly, Scrabble, or anything."

If so, I'd love to hear where you live or where you heard it. I'm wondering if it's regional, age-related, or something else.

Thanks! h/t @jsit

It's National DNA Day!

I'm #adopted , so until I had my #DNA tested by 23andMe, AncestryDNA, & FTDNA, I had no idea who or what I was. My adopters told me I was French. Turns out, I'm #Basque , #Finnish , #Norwegian , a little #Irish , a little #English .

Do you know your ethnicity? I find the subject fascinating--prolly bc I was always denied my most fundamental truths re: ancestry & heritage. If you'd like to share, I'd love to hear your story. #NationalDNADay #adoption #AdopteeVoices

Ever wonder about the phrase: "That's a real Heath-Robinson"? #English cartoonist & illustrator William Heath-Robinson is known for drawing whimsical inventions to achieve simple objectives.

In fact, he was so good at imagining overly complicated contraptions that his name entered the lexicon. In the early 20th-century, "That's a real Heath-Robinson," described anything with an unnecessarily elaborate design that performed a simple task in an eccentric manner.

A drawing shows an overly complicated design for enjoying a cup of tea. A man is sat in a comfy chair smoking a pipe and reading a paper. Houseplants and a small table mimic a living room. However, everything is on a platform hanging outside an upper story window, with gears and pullies operating everything, including an overhead line of washing held up by balloons and a baby being rocked in a cradle underneath. The man's wife is carefully stepping out of the window with a teapot, while the family dog sits in his house at the end of the platform. Other houses line the street underneath.

The cats often hang out nearby when I do dishes, and I always wonder what they think I'm doing. They know the kitchen contains food. But since cats don't wash dishes or use dishes other than their bowls, and none of them know English as far as we know, I can't even discuss it with them.

A colleague is recruiting participants for a #linguistics experiment who are over 18 and comfortable enough with #English to take the survey.

"This research is looking at the way different people use language differently. We are mostly focused on how people perceive some sentences and sentence structures as more natural or easier to understand."

The #English #proverb "Don't shut the barn door after the horse has gone" is sometimes misinterpreted to mean all action / any action is futile — but it's about taking the right action at the right time: shutting the barn door after the horse is gone doesn't keep the horse in the barn.

It's effectively an admonition against security theatre & mindlessly following procedures.

Note it doesn't say you can't close the door while the horse is still there, or chase a loose horse. 😉
