Does someone want to explain to me how, in order to get a PO Box, one needs a photo ID (drivers license, passport, etc) AND one of the following:

• A lease, mortgage, or deed of trust
• Voter or vehicle registration card
• Home or vehicle insurance policy

BUT NOT:

• Social Security cards
• Birth certificates
• Credit cards

WHAT?!?!?

It's funny, when the web and personal computers first got started, recipes were often cited as the 'killer app' hauled out whenever an enthusiast wanted to explain why regular people would want a machine in their home, or why they'd use the 'net.

Now some 30yrs later, it seems like recipe sites are the harbingers of everything wrong with the web. So many of them are now mostly SEO-laden link-farms, and ad-revenue trash.

Oh look, Evernote is turning up the enshittification dial even further for free users. Get out while you still can! Several open source note apps can easily import from Evernote, little reason to stay anymore.

I dropped them months ago and I've been very happy with the combination of @joplinapp for notes and @syncthing to handle synchronizing note data between all my devices privately and securely.

However, if you have a YouTube account, you can set your links to open to Your Channel or tacking ?view_as=subscriber at the end of your home page URL. At least you're viewing your own uploaded collection and not their algorithm suggestions. Any other tips?

Maybe the #enshittification concept should include the idea that IT work needs to be controlled like physical factory operations. No, neither need to be controlled by the managerial class.

As I mentioned, I bought a new phone for the first time. My old junk phones were really long in the tooth, so I had an Android and an iPhone that I used for different (outdated) apps.

So I configured this one from scratch – and my God! The constant popups! The commercially-minded ¡guiding! The "I agree"/permissions! The pins! The passwords! The biometrics! The endless repetition! The bloatware! The cross-app pollination/pollution! The Google! #Enshittification, indeed! 48HR job.

I feel dirty.

Grumble, formerly widely recommended domain registrar/webhoster #Gandi suffering from #enshittification (no wonder, they were sold to some private equity firm a while ago, which is never a good thing).

Simple email forwarding is no longer included and ridiculously overpriced.

Moved stuff to #emailforwardmx, which may or may not be a dodgy company. They certainly asked for too much liberty with customer data, but at least the price is reasonable.

I've purchased two things from #ebay in the last 8 years. The first ended up being a counterfeit SD card for which I was not reimbursed. In fact, the purchase transaction *disappeared* when the fraudulent vendor was kicked off. No recourse for me. I avoided eBay.

Then in August this year I ordered a costume jewelry ring. It still hasn't arrived.

I miss the old, exciting eBay - the one where I got my first digital camera in the early 00's.

Another comment on this: as the mainstream internet continues to enshittify, useful information will be increasingly limited to a few small, human-curated sites. Blogs like this will again become authorities in their particular wheel-house.

The lesson I draw from this is: don't think your hobbyist blog is a waste of time. It could become the authority sooner than you think.

In my quest to find GENUINE criticism of this movie in video essay form continues. Hubby did find a video by Nostalgia Critic that I don't think was the one I watched. We both find him insufferable, and this isn't the video criticism I had already seen, because that was a quite good video essay by a quite good video essayist.

If you have a URL to a video that is critical of "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" please post. These videos are suspiciously absent when doing Google or YouTube searches; only the gamut of faint praise to ebullient praise seems to be discoverable now.

I feel like a lot of what #enshittification is about is just the last half-century's wider economic trends moving beyond third-world economies and western blue-collar segments and finally hitting the "educated" classes. Universal worthlessness* at the hands of the robber-barons eventually comes for all the plebs and proles, regardless of how "above it" you might have thought you were.

* A term I saw used in the late 90s to describe the outsourcing cycle that saw western economies' manufacturing jobs outsourced in an ever spiraling-out cycle to ever-poorer economies …much like we're seeing jobs originally outsourced to China now moving to Vietnam and elsewhere because Chinese labor is becoming "too expensive".

@ifixcoinops I previously tooted about the trials and tribulations of trying to help my octogenarian parents with their newly acquired HP printer/scanner. It was...wow.

HP are the flipside to Brother...the pioneers of #enshittification. This product, marketed to non-technical SOHO users, had a USB with a sticker covering it saying DO NOT USE. The instructions made it clear that you were to INSTALL AN APP ON YOUR PHONE and REGISTER with their craptacular Cloud Service...and credit card info was MANDATORY even if you didn't buy anything.

If you didn't do this, and if the internet connection was down when the printer was powered on, IT WOULD REFUSE TO PRINT until it detected an internet connection!

My parents live on a farm with spotty wireless broadband so on my advice they took it back to the store and exchanged it for the equivalent Brother.

The Brother had no (cr)app. It *came with a driver CD*! It came with the USB cable!! It was ACTUAL PLUG AND PLAY!!!

Like 2003 again but in the best way!

Once one has learned about the #enshittification lifecycle of products and services, it shows up everywhere, and it is like trying to build stuff out of crumbling sand.

I am *so* fed up to be handled as consumer cattle. I want to understand how cooperatives / non-profits can drive technology standards / libraries / stuff under a scheme that makes enshittification hard(er). I need to (re)read more Doctorow stuff.

Given that sharing the mobile screen on TV once worked perfectly without a hitch, having to install special apps trying to become my one-for-all dashboard, grant permissions like crazy, configure the living hell to accommodate shitty apps and agree to TOS of a surveillance capitalists wet dreams to basically pay rent for a feature I had already paid for, this is a prime example of #enshittification by #Google and #LG as explained by @pluralistic.

Finally cracked and installed the Reddit app and... wow, those are a lot of big ads that they're shoving into my face. The opening page has one article with the other 75% of the screen taken up by a pizza ad.

Reddit made it very clear that they've given up their community roots and gone corporate, and this #enshittification is the seemingly inevitable result.

As an aside, it's impressive to see the success of the concept of #enshittification, which was one of the first things (maybe the first?) I learned on Mastodon, as it was posted here by @pluralistic shortly into the mass migration from blue bird. I certainly don't feel like I missed out on the action being here 😉.

ActivityPub (the API) is open, and there are already mobile clients, if you prefer an app. It's not a perfect replacement, but more people would help, I think.

so the email at my work has long been outsourced to #google mail and yesterday we got a support call and I said it might be easiest to send a screenshot and a report to our support email and he was like "yeah I did that an hour ago didn't you get it?"

So i checked the spam folder and there it was...along with nearly a dozen other false positives since the end of October...as many false positives as I would have previously encountered in a whole year!

Has Google done another roynd of #enshittification lately making non-gmail providers jump through more hoops or something? Are they using their new garbage #AI to screen email now?

I have never been a fan of using gmail as our provider (that was entrenched long before I was hired) but the single reason I tolerated it was that spam control was decent. Google is trying really hard to lose this customer!

I guess I gotta check the spam folder more than monthly now :blobcheeky:
