Poland Isn’t the Friend the West Thinks It Is!
Poland’s support for Ukraine is no sign that now, after nearly a decade of democratic backsliding, it’s coming around to the importance of democracy. What the government is defending, really, is sovereignty and the right to self-determination — an existential rather than a political commitment. In the rush to acclaim Poland and present a united front, Western politicians have overlooked something at their cost. Far from receding, Polish illiberalism is alive and well.
We know, by now, what that looks like. The government, led by the hard-right Law and Justice party since 2015, has taken over key state institutions such as the public media, curtailed the independence of the judiciary and instituted draconian abortion laws. To neutralize opponents, almost all political tricks are allowed: wiretapping, denigration and even outright lies. With crucial parliamentary elections coming this autumn, the electoral process has been tinkered with to favor the incumbents and a new bill passed that could remove opponents from political life on the pretext of acting under Russian influence. In its bid to secure a third term, the Law and Justice party is leaving nothing to chance.

Anyway walking around Belgrade today, I have established a theory that there are two basic types of cities in the former communist bloc of Central and Eastern Europe.
Type 1 are the cities with pretty 'chocolate box' central districts that don't seem to have changed much in centuries: eg Kraków, Prague, Lviv.
Type 2 are the cities where you can tell that a Lot of History has happened up to quite recent times: eg Warsaw, Belgrade, Kyiv. Doesn't necessarily mean they're unattractive, but they are complex to engage with.
Bit of a generalisation, but it's something to work with. What do you think?

For some reason I've become quite brave on this Europe trip about asking for a glass of tap water when ordering a meal. If you don't feel like drinking alcohol, those pissy little 200ml bottles they serve here are a rip-off.
(The ultimate test will be doing it in Germany next time I visit there. I anticipate sharply withdrawn breath and disapproving looks from waiters when I order "Leitungswasser" - which I think literally means "plumbing water".)

#water.... the major issue of the new millennium:
in the UK we have a problem of #pollution compounded by leaks & dilapidated #infrastructure;
In southern #Europe the persistent #drought, caused by #climatechange & again compounded by leaks is about shortages of water;
periodically, across the world, suddenly there is too much water & #flooding ensues....
We need answers to these issue if we are to survive & let me tell you #privatised water provision is not going to deliver anything useful

I propose that they then drop Open from the name. OpenAI is to open source and transparency, as McDonald’s is to healthy food.
It wouldn't surprise me if some of these islands were the first in #Europe to disappear because of #SeaLevelRise - the pace of silting in the #WaddenSea will perhaps not be able to keep pace with rising seas within a few decades, at least not in all places.
