Sun rising over #Evia

On my September stay in #Greece, we had to leave our Evia apartment early (medical issue) and spend a night near #Athens airport, found a great place to stay on the coast. In the morning I wandered down to the sea front and watched the #sunrise.

#Photography on #Canon Eos 100D - f/5.6, 1/500s, 55mm focal length on the 18-55mm lens. Looks like I need to clean my sensor :-(

#Mourteri beach, #Evia, #Greece. The sun's just setting, the #beach is empty. The boat was there pretty well all the time - sometimes an old chap would be attending to it - nets, etc. One morning (at sunrise) I saw him out in it, possibly returning from #Kymi, a port along the coast.

And yes, I'm terrible at holding the camera level.

Inside a #Greek #church, the map names this as "Zoodogos Pigi chapel". A couple of kilometres south of #Mourteri on #Evia.

Had to play with exposure a bit to get this right. f4.5, 1/40s, 18mm focal length.

"An hour and twenty minutes with testimonies and documents that prove how a fire that could have been contained in time, managed with zero wind and "non-extinguishing orders", to burn more than 52 thousand acres of land.
Forests, animals, villages, crops, the toils of a lifetime were left to their fate and turned to ashes by a government which expelled the inhabitants from their villages while never taking care of the protection of the forests or the fire. Instead, it plans to invest in new land, in the name of "development" and "reconstruction".
In the second part, which will be ready soon, we will prove "why" North Evia and its people's liωelihood and dreams got burned.

I checked the date again: The photo was taken when the tropical cyclone 'Zorbas' hit Greece in September 2018. Some days later, we went to #Skyros and #Evia where we saw some pretty bad destruction caused by the storm.

Even though #Evia (#Euboea) is the 2nd largest Greek island, most people probably never heard of it before the devastating 2021 forest fires.

Evia is very close to the Greek mainland (40m at the closest point!), and it's not very touristy because nice beaches are rare … but it's great for hiking!

Of course, there are #cats on Evia! I only saw a few ones though, most of them black-and-white.

The #wildfires in #Greece are still burning. The largest blaze right now is just west of #Athens. The smoke travels as far as #Crete.

On the upper edge of the satellite photo, the burnt forests of #Evia are also clearly visible as a large brown area on the island's northern half. Some days ago, all of this was still green. 😿

The situation in #Greece is still very bad: Huge parts of northern #Evia are destroyed by the #wildfires, which continue to eat through the island's forests. The wind has changed to a Northern direction, and a gigantic cloud of smoke is now reaching as far as Northern Africa.

The fires north of Athens seem to be under control, but on the Peloponnese several areas are still burning.
