During the lockdowns I started working on family relationships, because I didn’t have anyone else. But there are only so many times you can speak up and try to educate them, before you realise that you can’t change their homophobic and transphobic default.
Of course, deep down I knew this, but they appeared to be trying to change and listen. Of course, once lockdowns were lifted and they could get back to their ‘normal’ I wasn’t important anymore, and they couldn’t be bothered.

Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of my coming out, and really starting this show like my Captain just told me to engage at maximum warp. It's an extremely important day to me, a lot more than my actual birthday. But it's generally even less noticed than that.
Well. Can't blame anyone if I don't tell anyone, so I had a quick phone call with my mom (so far 1 of the only 2 supportive family members) that, hey, this day is pretty important to me, could we give this more importance next time?
And she just said "Sure, I remember that day had to be some time around now, I'll note it in my birthday calendar so I'll remember!"
So easy. So simple.
And for reference, my mom is in her mid sixties now. Age isn't the issue.
She preaches in church. She was happy and proud when I showed up to her 25th ordination anniversary, trans and pagan as I am, just as her daughter. Religion is not the issue.
She doesn't know much about being queer or trans or nonbinary. She'll run media by me to ask if it's reputable, and looks for ways to use inclusive language beyond a third, awkwardly tacked on box for all other genders. Not knowing is not the issue.

I went to look at Twitter for a minute and there was a great repost from @GreatDismal about Felicia Snoop Pearson and the nailgun scene from The Wire, so I had to dig up my treasured old photo from 2007 of myself and my daughters with Snoop at an end of season picnic in Baltimore. She is such an amazing person.
My sister found this picture of us from the mid 90's and we can't get enough of it. The hair, the glasses, the eyebrows, the copious fabric -- we love it all.
Caught on film is our family's legendary side eye -- leveraged the most when surrounded by cis het patriarchal Baptist nonsense (as we were that night - we came home from being out and our father had some of his church guys over the house. I believe this was the night someone told me I'd want kids once I had them. Assssssssss.)
Even better is that I think my mom took this picture.
The GOP's anti-LGBTQIA+ stance and hostility caused three of my extended relatives to come out this year for moral support from the family.
All three are in red states. Two live in southern states.
The one Fox-loving uncle who can't be nice to anyone doesn't get family invitations anymore.
The culture war loses its power when friends and family are threatened.

I don't like it at all when people apologize, say "that's so sad" or some variation, "she must have loved you", etc when I talk about how I'm estranged from my mother. The truth is, I'm glad I am! It's one of the best changes in my entire life that's ever happened, and I don't see things ever changing.
I want to counter the narrative a bit that estrangement from a family member is always this sad thing, because for me, it really was and is happy and good. There has been so much relief and improvements to my health with the estrangement, so much extra room in my life opened up to just live to my fullest extent ever since then, and I don't regret it at all.
The estrangement made me stronger, happier, healthier, better. Not broken, damaged, or someone always doomed to be messed up about it. I think it's time that as a society we broaden some of the narratives we have around estrangement
Here's hoping that all my wonderful supporters have a beautiful day today. We all deserve to spend some quality time with family. I'm going to go eat my favorite Pizza today with my Mom and one of my children.... Maybe even visit the beach to gaze in wonder for a few minutes. Happy #Mothersday

i used to think of codependency as "2 people who are dependent on each other way too much so that they become overly-enmeshed."
but once i learned about the term's origins in the world of substance addiction, it made more sense: in a family or relationship, the "dependent" is the one who is dependent on a given substance (aka "the addict", but can also be "the narcissist", etc.). the co-dependant is the significant other, or a parent, or some other family member, who is the main person dealing with the fallout of the addicted person, helping them, carrying them, taking their abuse, & whatever else.
in this short video, our ole pal patrick teahan talks about codependency as being about keeping the ship floating at all costs. and you know what, i love this description. it definitely describes my mom (who is the main co-dependent with my narcissist dad) and hopefully it will be a helpful framing for you as well.

Enjoyed a fun morning with my son and his family at the Carolina Tiger Rescue kids tour. They have a couple tigers rescued from the 'Tiger King' folks, along with many animals that were rescued from unscrupulous breeders or surrendered by individuals. Highly recommend if you're in the area!
