An early #FernFriday because it’s never too early for a #Fern

#Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart’s-tongue Fern) - they grow much bigger in damp soil, but like a lot of spleenworts, they will happily bonsai themselves when growing in a crack in a wall.

Row of ferns growing in tight green rosettes from an old brick wall in London. The leaves are entire, unlike most ferns, and look like long green tongues. Some of the leaves are showing their undersides, which have stripes of brown sori bearing the fern’s spores.

It’s not Friday but #FernFriday I guess. (Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’) #Blechnum #Ferns

Unfurling fern crosier: a long orange rachis with quite leathery triangular leaflets arranged left and right, currently partly coiled towwrss the centre like watch-springs. The leaflets are a bronzy red with an orange petiole. Background are two unfurled leaves with yellow rachis and dark green slightly crinkly leaflets

A fluke shot that I really like! The Painted Lady Fern has fronds that are a gray green with burgundy red stems and veins. As the heat of the summer increases the fronds become greener. This Painted Lady Fern is one of my very favorites.

Ostrich fern (fertile
leaves) at Nymans, Sussex.

#FernFriday #Ferns #Matteuccia

Fertile fronds of an ostrich fern - both in form (chunkily pinnate) and colour (grey-black) they look like the feathers of an ostrich. Surrounded by a shuttlecock of more typically ferny green sterile leaves.

When I moved to Vancouver Island, I was surprised by the size of fern. It can be as tall as me. I felt like I was walking in a Jurassic forest.

The delicate, lacy new fern fronds of the Japanese Painted Fern are stunning in burgundy in the spring garden. These lacy, red stemmed beauties are one of my favorites as the wine burgundy and olive fronds are quite attractive.

When you look at some fern spores under a microscope and the spores are just like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#sporespondence #fernfriday

Circular photo taken with a microscope, so a round white field in a black square. In the white field are fern spores, small green circular things, each with four short zigzagging threads coming out from them, in some cases making the spores look like little shrugging figures.

We often thank people for writing image descriptions here. And we should; they're awesome! So please consider this post as only applying to those awesome folks who describe their images, and those who only do not because of their own disabilities, especially if they use imagecaptionspls@a.gup.pe or the Alt4You hashtag instead:
Thank you, too, to those of you who properly tag your posts. If you use any of the below hashtags (and I hope you can forgive me for pinging them this once), thanks! Or, of course, any other image-related hashtags that I just haven't encountered yet!
They give your post more reach, of course, and that's very useful to artists. But they also make your post easily filterable. This means that sometimes, when there is a little too much of everything, I can temporarily lessen the amount of images on my timeline.
Please do not take this as proof that image descriptions are useless. They're not! I for one still very much enjoy them. There's a reason why #Caturday, #CatsOfMastodon, #DogsOfMastodon, etc. are not in the below list, though tagging those is still great! It's because I cannot imagine a day when I'd feel overwhelmed by cute animal pic descriptions.
But ... while I often want to be a part of your world, there are days when I don't feel like it. When I'd rather enjoy the text that is common to all of us, the reason I came here. Or perhaps all the cool audio stuff my friends are posting (which should also be described and hashtagged for deaf and hard of hearing folks!) Filtering allows me to do that on a platform that doesn't support blocking media, while still recieving some images that I *am* interested in, and not having to mute any of you wonderful people.
I know "thank you for letting me filter and ignore your stuff" is not the kindest statement, but ... yeah, still.

Deeply moving journey into the misty mountains of Hakone, near Mt Fuji, yesterday - a welcome escape from the sweltering heat & bustle of Tokyo. Ancient cedar trees looming in the mist, branches encrusted with epiphytes, the air ringing with singing cicadas and warbling birdsong, moss covered boulders and immanent stillness

Living in the temperate rainforest means fern can be as tall as you. In some forests, it covers the entire ground leaving just enough room for a trail. I sometimes wonder how much life there is under the fern: birds, batrachians, insects, mammals...

My most un-fernlike fern for #FernFriday - Marsilea quadrifolia (Water Clover). Ferns don’t care for your preconceptions about how they should look.

#Marsilea

Aquatic fern with four-lobed leaves that look a lot more like clover than an average fern. Leaves arise from a thin rhizome that snakes underneath the surface of the pond water

A truly gorgeous item in our collection is this 📗, New Zealand Ferns. Prepared and mounted by T. Cranwell in Parnell, NZ, it features a green leather spine and carved wooden panels for the front & back covers. This was gifted to the University of Tennessee Dept. of #Botany (now EEB) by Irvin Saxton in April 1945. It had been a gift to his grandfather from his grandfather’s brother (so Irvin's great uncle) in 1870. #FernFriday

Photographs of the front and back covers of a book. The spine is green leather and the covers are carved wood with the title, New Zealand Ferns, in the center front. Photographs of a note written on the first page is on the bottom left: "Auckland, New Zealand; July 4th 1840. Accept from your affectionate brother and sister Charles [?] and Emma". Photograph of another note is on the bottom right: "This vol. was sent to Irvin Saxton's grandfather by latter's brother Chas. Saxton in 1870. Presented by Irvin Saxton to Dept. Botany, April 5, 1945"

Eared Lady-fern (Athyrium otophorum var. okanum) is really excellent at this time of year. Beautiful and - once established - quite drought-tolerant too.

#Ferns #FernFriday (I know it’s not Friday but maybe it will be when you see this) #Athyrium

Fern with unfurling fronds. Each frond is bipinnate and the pinnules are also lobed. Fronds start a cream colour, almost white, and later become an acid yellow and then light green but the veins and rachis are purple.

My beautiful kitty's beautiful kitty face visible through a break in a veritable jungle of ferns in the sun.

A beautiful bi-colour fern seen on a walk over the long holiday.
#LovelyLeaf #FernFriday (in twenty minutes)

A brilliantly two-toned fern. Many feather-shaped leaves branch out from the central stem. The outer edges of each are a pale, almost bleached-looking green which gradually deepens to regular leaf-green the closer to the stem that you get.
