hot-take: #filipinos should not nor ever praise #web3 or any #cryptocurrency related. our country is already in poverty and we solving it using these technologies is just scamming your own future with fake wealth. imagine solving cryptographic puzzles just to get money. sure some of these are require low energy now but it doesn't change the fact that the reward does not translate solving ***real problems***.
In Korea, they have plenty of online forums and spaces where Koreans can talk about anything… and even anonymously (at least after the SSN requirement was repealed).
It's both good and bad.
Good: they can discuss topics that matters for their country and culture. Or, the latest trends. Create memorable and funny memes that even gets the attention of variety show celebrities.
Bad: it can be used, especially by anonymous users, to reveal private information, cancel an actor, start a campaign to force a TV/Cable network to a cancel a fictional show.
This online culture, from my vantage point, came up because of the language barrier. English is not a common second language in Korea, thus, instead of Koreans using Facebook and Twitter and Instagram (before Instagram became popular there), naturally one would be in a space where you can communicate with everyone else. That is their own local online forums and communities.
This is what the #Philippines lack. We rely so much on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
I am thinking… maybe, just maybe, having a #Kbin instance for the #Filipinos can help build this local community / space where we can lay down everything and talk what matters to us without all those foreign companies dictating to us what we can see and can not see (a.k.a. algorithms), and say and can not say (a.k.a. the precious community guidelines of FB that they themselves don't even follow).
Something similar to what South Korea have. Minus, hopefully, the bad usage of it.
